Hot tip from a traditional artist: When you're wanting to see if you like a certain blend of colors but dont wanna ruin the actual piece, test how they blend on a separate piece of paper. That way you can experiment and fuck up as much as much as you want lol. Saved me a lot of headache Edit: My God over 2k likes what did I do to deserve that-
I just gave that same tip hahaha. I need to read the comment section before I post lol. Like you should see my artbooks, I use Prisma color pencils and the opposite side of the pages you see all of these color blend sections haha.
just wanted to add to this comment thread for visibility. 1. You guys should get kneaded erasers! They decrease the chance of you screwing up the page when you rub out your sketches and you can lightly lift the graphite of the page for a better lineart experience ^^ 2. When dealing with alcohol markers, you need to work a bit fast to get more even layers or else you end up with patches with different shades etc 3. Most people (myself included) prefer the brush nib for blending but the chisel tip is great for covering large areas so you don't end up with the patches! It's always so funny/interesting seeing how artists who started digitally approach traditional art! You guys are doing a great job, keep it up :DDD
Hi, I never usually comment, but Daidus made a comment in the end of the video stating that when you put alcohol markers on the paper once you put it, you cannot lighten it. There is a marker call, 0 or colorless blender is just regular alcohol marker with alcohol ink in it. You can place it on top of the place where you wish to lighten It will take a sec, but it will lighten. But keep in mind You do have risk of bleeding. So if you chose to use it please keep that in mind. Just use it with caution, but it is possible to lighten the dark orange. The band he was talking about to make it like a golder color you could have used a colorless blender to help achieve that color. I hope that helps. Emily your doing great just keep practicing. If Daidus or Emily don't see this I hope someone who starting copics or achohol markers. I hope this help you. 😊❤
I mean this kindly I feel like she is putting herself to a bad standard because it looks amazing and the coloring is great except for the one bow mistake
all the hair highlights in Emily's drawing is so nostalgic to me when I used to colour anime girls all the time and added shine to every little curve in the hair
I’m a fashion designer and sometimes it’s hard to find something to watch while I work and I’m so happy I finally found something, it’s so calming and helps when I have art block
1.) Jupiter: Was a lovely all around person that was powerful as well (Supreme Thunder being a really awesome attack) but I also liked that she just as liked “girly” things despite having a tomboy demeanor. I really wanted her cool attitude and I’m around the same height as her and I love green. 2.) Moon: Related by not wanting to do homework, crying, eating, playing games, and not catching innuendos. Although she did cry a lot she still had a spit-fire tongue against Mars which was hilarious. Yet deep down she is really sweet. 3.) Uranus: Again just the cool factor of her being a powerful scout. (World Shaking is one of my favorite attacks). I really liked how the outers could take care of an enemy most of the time no problem and had a beautiful soundtrack. My only thing was I didn’t like her attitude in some cases. While she had the right idea most of the time she either: executed it poorly or failed to communicate/was cold with the inners. I also loved her androgynous voice and style in suits.
I drew a lot of traditional pieces with G-pen and India ink with copics, usually I ink at the top left and work my way down to the bottom right so my arm/hand doesn’t smudge the ink. It’s a huge help if you’re inking and drag your hand on the paper!
I apologise in advance for the lengthy comment ! 😭 For their first time this is genuinely a good job! When I used copics for the first time the blending looked like shit, so honestly Daidus and Emily got the hard part down TT The skin on Daidus’s artwork is really well blended imp, and the way Emily coloured the hair is so cool and unique ! I do have some a useful tip though incase you guys didn’t already know! If you would like to make a colour lighter, you can put a paper underneath the your artwork, and use a colourless blender on the part you wish to get lighter. This can either completely get rid of the colour or just lighten it, but it must be done right after applying the colour (so before it dries!) You guys can also try using watercolour for the base colours (to save ink or make it less of a grueling process 😭) , and shade on top with the copics! I think Daidus’s idea with practicing multiple parts is a really good idea as well! Practicing separate parts makes the process less overwhelming to do tbh and it’ll definitely help in the long run! This video was such a fun time i’m so glad you guys tried a full copic illustration it made me really happy ,,^^,, !!
When I watched them talking about them struggling about the hands or other things but they still try to do some practice it gives me confidence to make mistakes and tell myself it's fine you can do better if you keep on practicing and tbh I have not been drawing for like three years so I'm trying to get back to it and practice more
I'm a total beginner with copics but one thing that's essential for me is having a gross swatching sheet to one side for testing and layering colors, like when Daidus mentioned wondering how red looked in the skin!
I find it helpful to have a draft paper near for swatching colors. It's helpful to choose the correct shade and to test how overlaying certain colors would look
As someone who has mostly been a traditional artist, I actually find it difficult to remember I can just undo stuff when doing digital pieces and by the time I remember I've already saved more than a few times. That and not realizing just how crucial things like layers could be. That said, I can totally understand the issues in being new to traditional work. For what it's worth I think these are both pretty good! I might have made Jupiter's bow translucent or given Venus really dark, contrasting shadows to hide her arm, but then it seems you were trying to be as accurate to the style as possible and those would be a bit of a change. I don't even recall what I watched Sailor Moon on, but I was born in '91 and some of my earliest memories are of watching the show. One of the first teeth I recall losing was while eating this big chocolate chip cookie during it and I don't think I even realized at first lol. Some years ago I managed to find the complete series and intended to watch past where I'd last left off (I think somewhere in the ark with the weird flute aliens or whatever they were) but hadn't realized it was a new english dub. I really don't want to dis any of the new work or talent but the original dub is so ingrained in my formative memories that I just can't get used to Luna not being an old grumpy cat or Molly not being from Boston, along with having a different soundtrack. Maybe one day I'll give it more of a chance. It's not like the rest is dubbed anyway. Favorite has always been Mars. Just something about a girl with a temper who can usually back up her words and has a more hidden sensitive side to her.
Honestly, making this channel has been one of the best decisions I really like seeing you guys draw more on the traditional side! I love the whole idea and even Ichika(the mascot) its all so cute!! Having found this channel made me want to try drawing again on paper and improve my art skills. It's always been so fun watching your videos whether its here or in your main channels, keep going!!
I don't know if you guys have found a copic artist to learn through osmosis from yet, but Studio AP (Japanese artist) on here does speedpaints with copics and he puts the copic codes on screen for reference!
I'm actually doing my own drawing project of drawing all sailor scouts from the original Sailor Moon series with the girls in their school uniforms, and their sailor scout outfits as well. Loved this episode of spilled ink, hope there will be more fun and creative artwork on this channel☺☺☺
TIP FOR TESTING/PICKING COLORS: a great way to see if your colors are going to work together is to on a separate piece of paper (preferably the same paper as your actual drawing) you make a thumbnail of the art and color in the thumbnail. It can be as messy as you want, as small or as big as you want but it's a quick way to see how the colors are going to look next to each other. Try it out it might work for you
The Sailor moon fanboy that i am screamed seeing the thumbnail. Its okay Daidus Toonami is coming back on the Air so new generations of kids can now see what we saw when we were younger. I would THROW HANDS if someone disrespected Saint Tails was one of my most favorite underrated animes. Also 4kids was on Fox/WB for most people so even without cable most would have had access to it.
I was also a no cable kid and I had my papa record Yugioh for me every weekend on the same VHS tape. I would watch the tape and then give it back to him to record over it again. That's also how I watched a bunch of anime on Adult Swim because he would just let the tape record until it ended on its own. That's how I watched Code Geass for the first time. One of my favorite anime's of all time.
Something I do is practice coloring on a coloring book. They do make alcohol specific adult coloring books. That way you don't waste a bunch of time drawing something and feel anxiety when coloring it. Edit: I just found a bunch of Sailor Moon coloring books on Amazon
PBS kid here too. For YEARS until we got cable when I was a tween, PBS was the only kiddie channel my sisters and I watched for hours as we grew up. It also led me to appreciate Celtic Woman more too, because they always aired their live concerts on the same public access channel that PBS is on for where I am. Loreena McKennitt is another artist whose concerts played live on the channel too, and she's become my favorite female artist over the years. Man what I wouldn't give to see either live in person tho. Highly recommend both to anyone who enjoys folk/world genre music.
You guys should definitely consider watching the Sailor Moon remake (Sailor Moon Crystal). It more closely follows the manga and is a great watch! Its fun the compare the differences between the two!
watching them struggle and learn is honestly really heart warming, like i know their suffering but at the same time it really impressive to see that they are still positive and supportive to one another and just willing to learn
I really do enjoy these traditional art study videos. I had an art piece that i had sketched out earlier but was procrastinating on inking it. But clicking on this video gave me the encouragement I needed to ink my sketch, .So thank you Daidus and Emily, for being a great model and pushing yourselves to try things out of your comfort zone.
As a kid I always refused to watch Sailor Moon because I thought it was "too girly", which is hilarious because I was the kind of kid who loved playing with dolls and pretend I was raising a baby but apparently Sailor Moon was a bridge too far for child me. So my biggest association with Sailor Moon is friends on Discord who use Sailor Moon characters as profile pictures which is why my favourite Sailor Scout is Sailor Uranus because she reminds me of my friend.😊 Also because her name is really funny. Haha Sailor Butthole😂
I really want to see them use mixed media for their copic challenge where they do a whole piece in copics but add final touches with pencils or gouache or something. Since its still copic practice but also seeing how it works with other mediums
I really recommend using bristol paper with alcohol markers, when I used to be a trad artist it was my go to 👌🏻 and for inking, a light table / tablet (don't know what they're called) is really useful!
Couple tips for you guys! Kneaded erasers are your friend when lighting the sketch. The paper usually doesn't suddenly crinkle itself like it would with normal erasers! And in terms of coloring with Copic, ALWAYS color from light to dark. It's easier to make something darker vs trying to make it lighter! And as another has said, having a scrap piece of paper to test colors is the way to go when your not sure how it'll look together! Happy Creating! ❤
I too was a no cable kid. Channel numbers were different between regions. So while 4kids was on channel 11 in one area, it might have been a different channel in another.
I think both of your drawings looked really good, I like how they turned out!! although I think the camera settings is making them appear washed out somehow, like the colors looked completely different during the video and the patreon shoutouts, I loved how they looked at 25:00!
My first real memory of death was my grandpa at 8 years old. He was the sweetest, kindest man there was. A true friend to children, he loves kids soon much, he would talk to kids and treat them like real people, asking them questions and listening to them talk for hours on end. Needless to say I was absolutely devastated and to this day if I think about him for too long I could cry!! I'm 34 years old now.
I usually have a sheet of paper where I look what colors look good together, or maybe if you could layer the colors on top of one light color, like the skin color, so they will blend nicely
I’m surprised y’all don’t know about Pretty precure it’s a big anime girl franchise! There are a lot of variety in it so I think you will find something you will like
when i’m experimenting with colors and i don’t wanna mess up a piece, i get a scratch piece of paper and kind of color experiment on the side to see how it would look
This is reminding me of when I used to draw back in high school. My art teacher would make photo copies of my line arts so I could try out different colours/techniques and keep the nice line art! Saved me sooooo much heartache honestly 😄
Something I learned from my friend with markers, is to try the colors before drawing and naming them, in a similar paper, so you can decide what colors to use. Another thing is trying to do gradients. With markers you are really limited to what colors you have.
First time I've ever seen this channel, and I am in LOVE with this format. I love watching the drawing process and seeing it done traditionally is twice as fun to watch. I also loved the candid conversations!
When I work in inks and markers, I always make sure to have a slip of paper, or a section outside my boarder to use for mixing/testing colors! I find it really helpful. I also have all my colors swatched out and labeled/organized so I know what they look like and can reference them faster than fishing through my markers (which may be overboard, but it’s something that works for me personally)
I adore literally everything about this channel and its content and I never want the videos to stop. I don't know shit about art, but I love seeing u guys try out different things and challenge themselves, as well as the casual chats while u guys just draw whatever. It's amazing and i love it

I agree with Daidus on Sailor Venus on this one. Although I haven't seen Sailor Moon since it aired on TV.
And I loved Saint Tail.
Daidus: "Which ones Twinkie Winkie??" Me FR: 🤨
wasn’t expecting saint tail slander from daidus hello-?-???😭😭
the intro never gets old
@@Noimgam Take a bath with a toaster
Total Nostalgia with Toonami and Saint Tail! I feel sooo old loving anime to this day but young at heart because I am enjoying rewatching them too! XD
As a kid I always refused to watch Sailor Moon because I thought it was "too girly", which is hilarious because I was the kind of kid who loved playing with dolls and pretend I was raising a baby but apparently Sailor Moon was a bridge too far for child me.
So my biggest association with Sailor Moon is friends on Discord who use Sailor Moon characters as profile pictures which is why my favourite Sailor Scout is Sailor Uranus because she reminds me of my friend.😊
Also because her name is really funny.
Just the rage in them two when looking at their art that I think looks great
I think both of your drawings looked really good, I like how they turned out!! although I think the camera settings is making them appear washed out somehow, like the colors looked completely different during the video and the patreon shoutouts, I loved how they looked at 25:00!
"Tinky Winky... Lala... Po."
The blatant Dipsy erasure is craaazy
I’m surprised y’all don’t know about Pretty precure it’s a big anime girl franchise! There are a lot of variety in it so I think you will find something you will like
when i’m experimenting with colors and i don’t wanna mess up a piece,
i get a scratch piece of paper and kind of color experiment on the side to see how it would look
9:20 I didn't think I would find out today my whole life was a lie bc I thought Lala was the only girl in the group 💀
this channel has so quickly become my happy place. thank you for all the work you put into making this channel and these videos happen!
The highlights on Emily's character's hair is crazy
Work keeps me too busy to draw anymore. So its great to listen and watch you guys draw and learn new things.
Its really cute how you both positively encourage each other to get better together!
I adore literally everything about this channel and its content and I never want the videos to stop. I don't know shit about art, but I love seeing u guys try out different things and challenge themselves, as well as the casual chats while u guys just draw whatever. It's amazing and i love it
They came out beautifully. Really love the iconic poses. The coloring is definitely the hard part since you can erase what you apply
I'm so glad other people love Kaitou Saint Tail 😭 I love it so much
Also pls watch Crystal as well since it's actually manga accurate 🥹
