In permaculture they make sure the pond has sufficient clay deposits to make the pond permeable. Leaking slowly to build up ground water further down. They also build the dam high in the terrain to gain the highest amount of groundwater. Kentucky is blessed with generally abundant precipitation year-round so it is not something to worry about, but in dry areas this can rebuild depleted groundwater and create water abundance with minimal rainfall. For creating a rigid pond, planting trees on the top of the pond wall will help the structural integrity. The introduction of the fish will also help with reducing mosquito population, and the soil on the bottom of the pond can be used as potent fertilizer with high nitrogen rich soil. Not sure if i provided any information that you do not know already, but anyway love the project and the video. Much love from Norway.
@yungdefl Think of the dam as a structural wall. Tree roots can burrow into the tiniest cracks and grow, splitting the wall open and providing pathways for water to escape, and weaken the dam with water flow.
@@loaki9gt726 Depends on lots of factors. In history they used certain trees to give certain dams more structural integrity (in example in the dams of channels used as waterways), there they were even necessary as they reduced the winds coming from the sides, which would have had a very negative effect on the boats. If it’s mixed with the right oil like clay plus rock mix, it should in theory make it stronger with roots, think of wattle and daub, the rock and roots provide the strength, and the clay provides the flexibility and durability.
The fossil trees you threw in the pond are Lepidodendrons, 300 million year old tree-sized clubmosses, which lines up perfectly with the coal mining. Forests like these are what formed the coal, during the Carboniferous.
