i think that when they fell they fell to different points in time
I’m really hoping that Jaune will return to normal age after they leave the place, because from what we heard from Oscar is that Alyx didn’t write all her experiences, we haven’t heard “how long did it took Alyx to get back” hence the ending of Alyx story that she was sad because she wasn’t the same person as before 🤔 but I’m really hoping he gets back to normal age because that’s kinda messed up that he was alone away from his friends and family 🥺🥺🥺
Its obvious that he may have found the hyperbolic time chamber and was training to become powerful 😂
My theory that he IS the rust knight that met girl from the story all those years ago. Him falling back in time and going an adventure with the girl, defeating the jabberwocky, and waited for team rwby to show up.

Makes sense, since we see a second set of footsteps besides Alyx's in the opening. Also him falling in a different timeline than RWBY+N could be explained by the fact that he fell AFTER Cinder used the staff of creation and those pathways dissapeared.
It would corroborate with the knight who couldn't follow Alice. She simply wasn't the person jaune was waiting for. Though it's neat to think that jaune is now a legend. He wanted to be a hero too. It's nice that Alice thought him handsome.

I heard a great point in the Crunchyroll comments that Jaune may not have aged as in having had more time pass but had exchanged some of his youth in return for something else; much like how one can pay with ‘the amount of hope to fill a jar’, ‘the feeling of being loved’, or ‘a mother’s promise’.
I really like this one. But the fact that he said "You finally made it" seems to indicate he is been here fir a while.
Maybe is a mix of both. Were he was here for some time but not as long and had to give part of his time.

I think Juane underwent a different process of personal growth (as well as aging) once he fell into the Ever After. Time in the Ever After may move differently and Juane was forced to undertake trials that took years for him to pass while team RWBY fell simultaneously and must face their trials now. It's possible he's given a purpose in the realm being its protector (hence his title as the Rusted Knight) and may be involved with Alyx's adventures in a time relevance sort of deal. But if that's true then he may not be able to come back and become normal again, unless he fulfills that purpose and is awarded for it. Which I hope is the case since the next volumes shouldn't just leave him behind. He still has unfinished business in Remnant, especially with Cinder
I think you got what happened to him wrong. You're forgetting the fact that Weiss mentioned the rusted knight as a cherecter in the story they read . Meaning he would have landed way before them so far back he landed in the ever after even before Alex did .
If Jaune can land farther back in time, then Alex can land ahead in time.

Its also possible that the original Rusted Knight was a different person entirely, and Jaune just started wearing his armor

Keep in mind that as far as we know, no cherecter has replaced another like this. The red king didn't get replaced by another red king. For example, he was replaced by the red prince
Same for "herb," he'll probably either comebadk as herb or become something else altogether
So i don't think jaun could have inherited the title from someone else becues as the mouse said each persons has a title becues of there purposes each persons had a unique purpose

I agree with you there, but also think of who he is based off of. Joan of Arc, a Saint did what she was told and lost everything in the end. Would surprise me If RT either kills him off or makes him suffer even more

I'm going with time dilation, but a bit different, cause apparently Jaune showed up first before team RWBY and Neo did, and considering how long it took for them to show up, I'm guessing 11 minutes when they fought Cinder and Neo, and after falling, Jaune spent 11 years, or more, in the Ever After, before the girls showed up.
In the opening, a clock is shown behind Jaune and it goes from 10 to 12, completely skipping the 11th hour. Maybe that has something to do with it!

@@del-ilah agreed. I’m thinking since it could’ve been 10-20 minutes between when team RWBY and Neo fell and when Jaune fell, it could’ve been 10-20 years earlier for when Jaune arrived in the Ever After and when team RWBY and Neo fell.

I think we are all hoping jaune has the same experience as Marco from star butterfly when he went to another dimension the experience he got there made him stronger ,wiser mature some what he was and adult but when stepping back into his original dimension he's back to being a teen I'm hoping this is the case

More likely they will use this as an excuse to write Jaune out.
Unlike Marco, Jaune isn't a main character no is he the love intest of a main character.
He was introduced as the unknowing fool that had to have everything explained to him so we the audience know the status quo of the world. But at this point the status quo has changed so much anyone can fill that role.
He is also far and away the weakest character with even his improved weapon he still falls far behind the rest in skills. His semblance is also an impediment to the writing as he can just heal his wounded teammates. Removing tension from fights.
So I suspect they will use him to take out Neo and kill/leave him there. It would also reinforces Weiss comments about always leaving places in ruins and could prompt some some character growth by focing the girls to realize that even victory comes at a high price

I really hope Jaune doesn't stay behind. It will really ruin a lot for RWBY for me. I've been a huge Jaune fan and the one thing I really needed to see it him getting closure helping take out Cinder and avenging Pyrrha. It just wouldn't feel right if it doesn't happen after all he when through.
There has been some address to Jaune's formality. The man is so guilt-stricken that he subconciously holds himself below team RWBY. Let's not forget he was left alone to stew with the memory killing Penny in order to keep the maiden powers from Cinder.
This Man has taken so many L's all series long. He better have the chance to live the rest of his life a little happier. If he stayed behind I'm sure that would harshly impact Ren and Nora. They love the poor lug and might see it as unfair that he just couldn't get a break ever since Pyrrha, and probably feel somewhat guilty about it; especially Ren being one of the more recent discussions he had with Jaune was lambasting him for cheating into Beacon out of emotional instability.
Something that everyone seems to be forgetting, is the fact that the Curious Cat specifically said that people from Remnant are different from them, because instead of ascending, they just die.
I think Jaune is the original character of the Rusted Knight. He likely didn’t talk up the post or fill the role but was actually there when Alex arrived. Time seems to be immutable and shifting in this realm so what the flow of time is on Remnants does not necessarily mean it flows the same in the Ever After. Also given the imagery of who has appeared in the Ever After it may mean that other people have arrived there.
Not just Jaune and Team RWBY, but also other humans and even people. Summer seems to be one of said people. But also the people of Atlas who fell into the Void when they were thrown from the bridge. It is possible these people ended up in the Ever After as well. To keep this simple and easy to understand there is a lot of things that can be extrapolated from how the Ever After and Remnant differ in terms of time dilation.
Alex was the first individual to return to Remnant following her experience in the Ever After, given she published a book that went on to become a story that all children in the world know. Now there isn’t much in the way to extrapolate on when this story was written on Remnant. But if we take inspiration from Alice in Wonderland we can say the book was written 150 years ago.This can mean several things, that Alex arrived in the Ever After a long time ago from the perspective of Remnant, but in the Ever After she arrived and left maybe a few decades ago, given the fact the original characters from the story exist and they recall Alex, such as the curious Cat who recognises Alex, at the least two decades maybe three. That’s Alex covered
Jaune however has been around for several years, he was near 20 when he fell into the Ever After and now is several decades older, around forty to fifty years old. Meaning that he has been there for a long time. Given the fact he was part of the original story it is assumed he was with Alex through her journey all those years ago. He hasn’t ascended or escaped but simply remained behind, he likely realised that if he survived the fall than so too could his friends and he searched and then waited. It is even possible that he met Ruby’s mother given that her weapon is there and the fact it is still in pristine condition despite the many years she has been considered deceased.
But this begs the question on how do you appear in the Ever After? What is the catalyst that makes it happen. It would seem that in relation to the dimension created by Ambrosias that it was a world between worlds and that was the catalyst. But for the likes of Alex and Summer the reason for their arrival is unknown.
One thing is sure Jaune was ther longer than team RWBY, did he ascend? Possible, but most likely not. What surprised me was how formal he was, I mean he is older, but still isn't it kinda weird. I sure hope they didn't inflict to much emotional damage to our boy! Other thing that is interesting in this episode is axe, we all know that it belongs to Summer but i belive that it is ther not beacuse summer was or is in Ever-After but is representation of who Ruby strived to be, to be like her mother. What I would like to see is that Ruby emotionally can't stand and snaps, then she meets blacksmith, takes axe and become like her mother. Or become her mother? This can lead us to finding out more about SQTR and Summer, but more important what i hope will happen is that we find out Summer isn't as perfect as Ruby think, maybe dark secret or smh, but this realization will bring back Ruby(probably finding Crescent Rose will also help). From this she will learn that someone that she belive to be perfect isn't and it will open her eyes.. for something i dont know im not strory writer, feel free to write what she can learn form that. Last thing i would like to add is that if she used axe and Cresent Rose to make new weapon or upgrade Cresent Rose it would be very fiting end, a symbol that she is changed but she is still her self
Ruby becomes Summer even for a short time is going to do a lot of emotional damage to Yang

There can be multiple ways to explain what happened 1) why Jaune has aged up so much and 2) what he's been doing in Ever After before RWBY arrived. Given we got "tedious" exposition from Curious Cat right before the Rusted Knight appeared, Jaune ascending may be probable. His formal greeting to RWBY did seem off to me.
That wasn't really a formal greeting. It was much closer to the way someone would talk if they haven't seen someone in a decade or more. And beyond that, it just seems like Jaune talks more like that now. Similar to how the more prominent characters from The Ever After talk.
The formal greeting did seem off to me too however if he did arrive before everyone else and became the rusted knight for even alyx and chose to Remain behind to aide team rwby when they showed up because he knew they would come eventually would explain why he is so formal when greeting them he has lived along time and team rwby is more stranger than friend after so long and he had none of his friends when he fell by the time he fell it had been awhile since even Weiss fell and he was all alone with only memories for him which are know a time long gone

When he fell they sent him to time before and went through events and waited for rwby since he knew they was coming. “Team rwby you finally made it” gives me the impression he’s literally been waiting. Probably years even. And I don’t think he regressed I think time being alone just weighed him down. I mean remember he literally had to kill Penny. And be alone with that on his mind.
Theories aside, I actually find the idea of Jaune alluding to the White Knight to be very fitting. In Alice through the looking glass, the Knight was apparently kind of a clumsy goofball, but still a good person, kind of like Jaune.
I share my theory: according to the conversation the curious cat and rwby had, Jaune will "die" and be "reborn" in a similar way as happened to the red king and as is happening to Herb.
First they talked about how Ever After creatures can be reborn, not being the same as their previous versions, but they are reborn just the same. Next, they show us the appearance of Jaune, but older and "broken".
Jaune will die incinerated (making a parallelism with Joan of Arc) and will return from the ashes as a new Jaune (marking a parallelism with the death of Pyrrha, but in reverse) and my best candidates to help this happen are Ruby and the soul of Pyrrha (just imagine that while Jaune ascends, he meets the soul of Pyrrha and she gives him her last words for Jaune to return with strength).
The advantage that Jaune has, is that his aged version would be the one to die and he can return to his young version.
However, I think this would require a sacrifice, and who I think is ideal for this (although it pains me to say it) is the rabbit Juniper.
And then Jaune truly is never again who he used to be in every single way imaginable

I think the answer to what happened to Jaune is as obvious as it seems: he arrived in the Ever After first by years, perhaps even decades, ahead of team RWBY.
We’ve seen that time and linear space are not fixed in the Ever After. Despite supposedly arriving in the Ever After at the same time as Ruby, Neo wouldn’t land until a good bit later, after team RWBY had all met up and had their first confrontation with the Jabberwalker.
If you try to march straight for the tree, you’re going to get stuck in a loop until you give up and follow the path the Ever After wants you to take. Remember, the Ever After doesn’t play by our rules or cares about what should or shouldn’t be possible in our world or in Remnant. Weiss has had to learn that the hard way.
There’s no reason to think that Jaune arrived at the same time as everyone else. In fact, all given evidence points to the exact opposite. Jaune arrived in the Ever After much earlier than everyone else, despite falling last. He is *the* Rusted Knight, the one from Alyx’s story.
Remember what he said to team RWBY at the end of the episode: “you finally made it.” Not, ‘I’ve been looking everywhere for you guys’ or, ‘where have you been?’ They ‘finally made it.’ Which clearly Indicates that Jaune’s been waiting a long time for them.
As for Jaune not being able to leave, I don’t think it’s that he *can’t* leave. It’s that he refuses to leave because he’s been waiting for team RWBY to arrive. Alyx arrived in the Ever After at some point and Jaune, who had already been there for some time now, helped her get home. But he refused to go with her, choosing instead to stay behind in the Ever After and wait for his friends. Like Weiss said, they aren’t in the story of Alyx. They’re in its sequel. There are some things that are similar, but nothing is the same.
Is there any explanation on how the time there works tho? To this day i don't really understand how the main characters were able to read Alyx's story that included the rusted knight, who we now know IS Jaune, when they were kids (i assume that includes Jaune as well). Like, as literal kids they read a story about something that was only about to happen? Jaune read a story that included him but like 30-40 years older? I'm really confused.
Names are important here. Notice how Little didin't have a name because he was "too young", like he didn't have the chance to choose yet ,or to be granted a propouse.
I'm really sure that Jaune is the one that helped Alyx, since those events had to have happened during the Talking Racoon lifespan; he was young when he met Alyx and old when he met team RWBY, and we know that meeting the racoon and the Rusted Knight was at about the same time in the story.
The problem is...to be rusted, a lot of time has to pass first. And he was already called "the rusted knight" for the time Alyx arrived. That means he should have been living in the Ever Afters before Alyx arrival for years already. As all he wanted was to be a Hero, the only hero in the Ever After was The Rusted Knight, he had to become "rusty" first, and earn that name.
My concern is, "being wear out" should be enough to be "called" for ascending, as the Curious Cat explained. Jaune must have chosen to remain the same until team RWBY arrives. Become older and older. And after helping them (fullfilling his propouse) he may be able to chose again what he wants to be, but possibly at the cost of his memories. Although...the heart "very rarely forgets", he may be left with some remnants of his past self.
My theory mainly was that he went through time warp of some kind. Also I love the fact that his jackalope was named Juniper which was the name of his team with Ren, Nora and Pierra
I think the writers would keep Jaune old to fix one of the problems with his character since the start of RWBY: He was weak and inexperienced in combat, compared to everyone else. He is now a much more battle-hardened warrior.
Go with how Star VS did Marco age keeps his experiences but gets his younger body
My theory is Jaune did get thrown back in time, and he was the same Rusted Knight that Alex met. Also he has technically already fulfilled his character's role as the white knight, as he helped Alex escape but he never left as he stayed behind as he figured out he arrived before the girls and wanted to wait for them. Since the Cat seems to be able to make changes to people he might be able to help Jaune get his youth back.
I haven't touched on RWBY in *ages* but this recent arc has my interest. In regards to Jaune being a Rusted Knight and Ascension, there's an old novella by Robert Fisher called "The Knight in Rusty Armor." The entirety of the book essentially entails a Knight going through a journey to help him remove his armor that has rusted from his years of endless adventuring via him finally addressing his mental health and social relationships in a healing manner. So it's possible Jaune's rusted armor is also a reference to that.
Something I think your Overlooking is that the Rusted Knight was In Alex's Story which means he arrived at a point of time Before Team RWBY in the Ever After. And Considering how The Book was one they all knew from their childhood stories I would say he's been hear at least 10 or so years. This would mean that you arrive in the Ever After at the same time with someone you have a connection with whether positive or not that connection will allow you to land at similar times and would explain why all those random people fell haven't shown up because they're in a different Time of the Ever After. This could mean that team RWBY won't return to Remnant at the time they departed or will at the exact time they Departed and will show up to Fight the Hoards of Grimm.
I can only pray that Jaune isn't Killed off and Returns with them to Remnant!

i feel like ascending is something along the lines of like reincarnation. with their hearts being their souls, losing their memories but not losing something etched on their hearts
I think it's like then Now and Then tell Loki in House of Ideas about heroes and their stories. “For some it was a matter of necessity… For others, we were humbled by their sense of responsibility. They desire more time to sacrifice - a chance, perhaps, to save everyone…”. This land is embodied of story’s and Jaune wanted to atone for his “sins” (we know that he could not have saved Pyrrha, but for him it constant stigma that he cannot let go), and land gives him the time and purpose that he is craving.

If Jaune is forced to be left behind then this will make everything of the porpoise of his character be for nothing.
It is interesting in regards to what has happened to Jaune. I've seen quite a few theories already, and I got to say... a lot of them seem quite interesting. Though, I do wonder what sort of fate would befall our beloved knight. Is he destined/doomed to remain in Ever After... or, will he have a chance to return to Remnant with the girls once they fully discover/embrace the purpose they wish to be. I'm hoping that Jaune does return, mostly because I don't think the story would be as good without him. I am curious to see what comes next regardless.

My theory is this: this isn't jaune, it's the "rusted knight" the character, he just happens to look like jaune. He probably heard about team rwby from our jaune hence the formal greeting.
Our jaune is probably stuck somewhere in ever after, maybe stuck somewhere where time doesn't flow who knows. But the knight will probably tell them about him and thus the girls will vote to go rescue him

If Jaune were to kiss anyone, it would ruin his entire character. It would take so much away from the weight of Pyrrha’s death.

Jaune didn’t ascend he just got newer armor. I strongly believe that time dilation occurred like because Jaune was the last to fall he was sent ahead of everyone and because it had been a longer time in between the falls he was placed earlier in ever after’s story. He or some version of him met Alyx and helped her but she didn’t help him. Jaune didn’t ascend he just found a newer purpose and waited because there was no way for him to ascend at least not by himself. Jaune is Plagued by his failure if Ruby is justified in feeling sad then Jaune should be feeling 1000x worse for his failures. Jaune was a failure in life, he couldn’t help his team, save the girl that he loved, hold his own in a fight, or change the outcome of fights. I think the straw that broke was the thing that happened in the final fight last volume left him with blood and tears. Jaune became the rusted knight not because he ascended but because he’s stained by blood. (Stained can mean rust when talking about metal). maybe Jaune did ascend but if he did then it was an ascension that caused him to because the rusted. I believe that in this chapter all of the characters will have to ascend into stronger versions of themselves and that there may even be a relic in this place. I think that Jaune is secretly depressed and that the only way for him to ascend is too be forgiven by team Ruby. I think that a lot of this season will deal with overcoming depression and healing in this way maybe Jaune will be able to unlock more of his power he is a “white knight” this meaning a healing warrior and he needs to ascend to that power.

You know how we call fairy tales as "timeless classics"? I think the writers of this season really took that saying literally. Ever After is literally a timeless place. Our understanding of time in the 'real' world does not apply to Ever After. That is probably what happened to Jaune. Because it's timeless there, he is somehow about to fulfil the role of the rusty knight for Alyx and also for team RWBY. This also means that time wouldn't have passed for team RWBY when they eventually return to Remnant somehow. They will probably emerge from the other side of the door of the vault at Vacuo, and retrieve the sword of destruction in the process. They may even encounter the relic of choice crown too during their adventure, if Ozpin had hidden it in Ever After somewhere. But that is unlikely, because it seems like the story is building up towards a final return to Beacon for the finale, to complete the circle.
Wonder if jaune knows Alex
I hope it's a not a permanent thing. And I especially hope it doesn't take years outside in Remnant while the Ever After was merely days.

Ruby came very close to forgetting who she was.
He might be his own grandfather paradox if he returns being aged the same way
I have a personal theory about what's happening this season.
I believe that through out this volume Ruby will transform into Summer Rose. Now I know what your thinking but I have four main points of evidence for this.
1) Time flows differently between remnant and ever after. Jaune has aged significantly despite arriving last. So it's possibly for characters to theoretically travel to the past or future when passing between worlds.
2) Ruby has shown that she is firm in her purpose of defending the world from Salem but has begun to question a life outside the name Ruby Rose (episode 4).
3) Ruby has giving away her crest fom her Mother one of three symbols of their bond that she wears. (Red highlights, crest and cloak).
Earlier that same episode Ruby is transported into a smithy where a blacksmith suggests that Ruby's lack of weapon is a symbol of her inability to carry her burden and that she should pick up a new weapon, in doing so reigniting her duty.
4) Summer's character is based off an Irish poem 'the last Rose of summer' by Thomas Moore. In the poem summer is the last Rose persisting to life while all of her brethren lie dead and rotting.

I would like to point out that his armour itself is rusted (Obviously) but if you look closely it's HIS armor with a few extra pieces on it, so either he forfeited his armour to this realm or he really has been there enough for is armour to partially start to rust
If that's the case, this is what will happen to Ruby as well. And this was proven thanks to the curious cat.
1) Ruby already lost or gave away objects that represent her identity. Crescent Rose and her mother's brooch.
2) Alyx is parallel of Neo and Ruby and viceversa. Neo seems to represent the negative side of Alyx's character, such as never learning from her mistakes and everyone seems to pay for it. Ruby represents Alyx's struggles for identity and sense of lost, but also lingering innocence.
2) Ascending means being recycled into a new being. And the OP Inside we see a montage of a bridge with clouds, the moment we see Alyx turning around and transform into Ruby with a crazy smile before falling down. It wasn't random, this is clearly telling that Ruby will choose to Ascend and be Alyx.
3) Which doubles the irony that Ruby reappers as Alyx on the beach, with Crescent Rose nearby but it seems that she doesn't notice or plains ignores the weapon.
4) The rainbow fall leaf is symbol of change and is not coincidence this is showed with Ruby as well.

Well... There goes Jaune chances to make it back. The most obvious theory that he is arrived in Ever After many years ago and was waiting for team RWBY all this time. And most likely he will stay behind or die. Hope I am not right.
My guess for ascending maybe a way of rebirth for them, after all the cat did say the king became the prince. As for jaune being the rusted knight and how he became him, well that’s simple really what we have here is the whole “time works differently here” scenario, see even though we saw jaune fall down and that was a few seconds, but in this world it was years that passed by and that the previous rusted knight took him on as a pupil and as he passed away or ascended as they put it jaune became the new rusted knight.
With how it is depicted with the racoon being older, and the prince being by the looks of it maybe in his teens (if aging works on them, which might not) we could guess that Alex' journey happened ,maybe 15 - 20 years ago, Since Jaune had to have rust on his armor to be called the rusted knight, even if jokingly by Alex, he mustve been there for at least a couple of years before Alex fell. So Jaune mustve fallen into ever after nearly 25 years ago, and maybe up to 30. As for what will happen to him, I believe he will die by flame, but since nothing dies unless eaten by the Jabberwocky, he will most likely ascend and return to a youthful form. A rusted old knight, reforged in flame to be a shining white knight once again. I do hope he will keep at least the wolfs tail, if not the beard too, it just looks so good on him.

Actually the order they fell doesn't have any baring on when they arrived. Neo we know arrived last in the Ever After as we see her arrive when the Jabberwocker reached its home some time after being driven off by WBY and she fell before Jaune and Weiss even did, so Jaune arriving way before everyone else despite falling last already had a precedent.
And there is absolutely no way he ascended as he outright remembers team RWBY and JNPR, as stated in the episode, when you ascend you completely forget your old life, so the fact he remembers them means he couldn't have ascended.
I didn't know he was Jaune until he said Juniper...... but I did suspect it (wondering why he never called their name).
But it's clear that he is the original Rusted Knight because he was flung further back in time

Even if Jaune returns to Remnant with time resuming right after the fall, he'll continue to heavily guilt himself for mercy killing Penny..... Something I hardly doubt he'll forget. I mean, it's bad enough he comes to terms being helpless when Pyrrha went down but returning with Penny's outcome, will break his purpose as a protective Hunter moving forward. BUT the storyline for Jaune isn't revealed YET so I'm hoping for some sort of tranquility.

I really want to say that his semblance was the cause of him inheriting the duty of a rusted knight since Jaune's semblance is to amplify and compare to how everyone's semblance went with different growth how Ren's semblance allows him to see other's emotions while Neo made her semblance to gain a physical form when using it to clone rather than illusions.
Jaune has only shown that he can amplify his equipment as well in the previous volume but we don't know whether that counts as his semblance growing or evolving when it doesn't show that much change while in Ever after the amplifying semblance may have altered his status from a stranger in that world to the rusted knight as a result change how he looks and the different experiences he may have gained. or perhaps he can change his age and gain different experiences in battle or something else just like how Neo changed how jabber walker compare to the original story.
I know that it is a far fetch guess but it does seem possible to me since when Ren unlocks his semblance to hide his emotions from the Grims but it allows him to see other's emotion when it grows or evolves for Jaune his Aura was forced awaken while his semblance was unlocked when he feels terrible after what happened to Weis but for me, I want to say that he can alter or manipulate time for himself to be to gain a boost of some sort for himself like the complete opposite from his semblance amplifying others similarly to Ren and Neo semblance growth. Lastly, as for Alice through the looking glass, the story is based on he could theoretically alter his fate by changing the flow of time by altering his role through his semblance or that his semblance may have something to do with the time after his awakening. We don't really know whether semblance can gain a powered-up form of their semblance or gain the opposite of how their semblance works Ren goes from hiding his emotion from the Grims to seeing other people's emotion while Neo is making illusions, that's what I think her semblance is about, and now making duplicates with a physical form
While I'm honestly scared we might get another Marco situation from SVTFOE if Jaune ever leaves the Everafter, this is a nice twist to his character. From being the inexperience boy holding onto his family past's glories, to developing into a decent enough huntsman in Volume 5-8, and finally being the ironic mentor figure of RWBY with Qrow out of the picture.
His character was literally designed to be the fastest to evolve in the show, and him being an adult now kinda represents how his rapid evolution had finally overtook basically everyone's otherwise stagnated progression, having somehow gotten over Penny's death, not in drunken abandon like Qrow, but in a 'positive' way, just like how he continued to follow Pyrrha's teaching during volume 4.
Also I honestly feel like it doesn't have to do with the order from which everyone fell, since Neo landed in Everafter significantly later than Ruby, even when they were just meters away during both their falls. For all we know, Jaune could have actually landed in the place significantly earlier than the rest, becoming or replacing the actual Rusted Knight from the story.
But if Jaune did become a part of Everafter and 'changed' into becoming this new Jaune, wouldn't that mean he can't leave Everafter? Like if that was possible, then the Curious Cat would've gone with Alex back to Remnant, but he did not. And it couldn't be a replica or a new Curious Cat since this one still remembers Alex fondly.
what I think will happen at the end of the season is that Jaune will intend to stay and sacrifice himself for RWBY(+Neo if she is to be redeemed)
he actually truly dies. but because hes spent so long in the Ever After he ascends, and becomes even more badass when he goes back with RWBY(N).

Here is my theory, the ever after is the effect of what people WANT over what they are,rwby has yet to face this themselves but as we see in ep4-5 they are reborn into what they will come or what they HAVE became. That said rusted knight took over jaune because jaune wanted to be a hero people could count on. He still remembers what happened before the ever after but during that while he was reborn and filled with memories of him becoming what he wanted. 1 more thing the awakening of a semblance was fore shadowed by ruby’s mom( via white eyes which IS MAGIC) so semblance is the root/memory of magic?
