  • Editorial reviews provide third-party credibility to your book, but are they worth all the hassle or costs? I worked with five authors in a case study using eBookFairs' editorial review service. Find out the results from this project and if it's worth getting editorial reviews for your books.

    Thank you very much for the heads up for eBook Fairs. I already received my first review. 4 stars for "The Peace Gene." And, the reviewer isn't even related to me! Sheesh, he should be my agent! Am I allowed to copy and paste any of the review on my amazon page for this book? 🤩

    • @DaleLRoberts
      @DaleLRoberts  4 місяці тому

      Absolutely! In fact, you can insert it into the editorial reviews section of your book in Author Central. Editorial reviews are meant for marketing, so tap into them however you can - product page, website, social media, email, etc.

    I'm testing out Pubby. The first review I have got back is 5 stars, submitted in or around 24 hours, reads like it was written by AI and is so vague I wonder if the person even read the book. Second review incoming. If this one#s the same or worse then that will end my use of this service. I think any system that externally incentivizes reviews is probably going to struggle to be authentic.

    • @DaleLRoberts
      @DaleLRoberts  4 місяці тому +1

      I tested Pubby and felt the same way you did. The reviews weren't all that great. And, I did NOT feel like reading somebody else's book so I could get mine read. That's too much work for me. I watched a random UA-camr's video last week where he admitted to hiring virtual assistants to manage his Pubby account, essentially washing his hands of any reading. As you can imagine, he's only giving other authors fake reviews because what VA is going to take the time to read an entire book? I'm doubting any.
      These types of platforms are a nice thought, but are perfect for exploiting. I'm not against the sites, but I do believe there needs to be a better vetting process so authors like you aren't getting stuck with crappy AI-generated reviews of someone who clearly didn't read your book.

    With my book I had an interesting situation. I have a review on Amazon where I wondered if the person who reviewed the book actually reviewed the book that I had written. That said, it was still four-star. I had another review (not Amazon) which was five star and hit on all the points that I had hoped to make. It was like they were two different books!
    What I'd like to know is how to get reviews for audio books. The reason I'm asking is because I'm going through the draft version of the audio chapters and one of the narrators has put the emotion into the scenes that I didn't even know I wanted and has done an extraordinarily amazing job. That's important to me, but I don't even know where to begin!

    • @DaleLRoberts

      Lean on your email list for getting audiobook reviews. I'm sure you have some free codes for listeners, so distribute those to your list or through a request on social media. I usually have StoryOrigin manage distribution and review tracking. That way I don't have to babysit reviewers. And, if they don't leave a review, I'll know the next time they ask for a comped copy of a book. StoryOrigin tells me their review history.

    Great content. Very informative!
    Newbie here.
    Was wondering... when a UA-camr encourages sales of your book by offering a coupon, for example:"add the name JohnDOE" to get a 15% discount. Is it possible to negotiate that they get a part of your own margin on the book for their enthusiastic presentation of your book? How does that work?
    I believe it's different to the Amazon affiliate program where the UA-camr would get a percentage from Amazon's margin. Am I right?

    • @DaleLRoberts
      @DaleLRoberts  4 місяці тому +1

      You can't really get discount codes for your books published on Amazon. Most likely, if it's a large enough influencer, Amazon might make an exception for a sponsorship deal. Beyond that though, authors don't really have a way to do discounts. That is unless you buy the book in advance and give it out for free. That's the only exception I know of.

    I assume you should have a quality editor indicate your book is "good" before submitting to others for their review? I can see that if your book isn't great (or maybe it is but not a genre liked by the reviewers, for example) then poor reviews could come rolling in, which would not be great.

    • @DaleLRoberts
      @DaleLRoberts  4 місяці тому +1

      Oh, agreed! 100%. I don't think any author should go without working with a quality editor.

      Thanks. I have been trying to get email lists and it seems like it can be difficult. It seems overwhelming until you set it up. After that, you just have to guide traffic to sign up for your email newsletter. Also, it's much easier when you network with other authors in your niche.

The only headache with this is I get a ton of people on Facebook wanting me to do this or that even when I tell them I already have a cover designer or a trailer, they seem not to understand No.
