The thing is if you do business in regions that DO tax, you have to abide by those tax laws. Look into managing US taxes and VAT for Europe. Taxes are unavoidable if you want global reach.

This was great! I created a publishing company name 3 years ago when I self-published my first book. I've published all 4 of my books and now in the process of publishing my first 2 authors. I formed my LLC a couple months ago :) This was the best video I've found on laying out the process I need to follow. I've already done 1 through 5 so I know I'm on the right track. Thanks!

Setting up an LLC in Montana is only $35 and can be done online. You can pay with a credit card.

I was listening to the part where you said just don't jump into saying I'm going to start my own publishing company. That one is true make sure you start it for a really good reason. I would say the reason I am probably thinking about starting my own book publishing company is because I saw this Hispanic literary agency, now I am a black writer but I tell Latino stories all the characters in my stories are Hispanic and the setting of the story takes place in their countries not in my country which is the U.S. but I am a black author. I'm this literary agency it was saying you can send your manuscript in English or Spanish which I am going to have my manuscript translate to Spanish anyway since my audience are most likely going to be Spanish. Now I was so happy, but then I saw please note we only take Latino authors no other authors we will not except who doesn't fall in this category. So I said to myself. "Okay, if all the characters in the book is Spanish, it's going to be written in Spanish, and the story will take place in there country it shouldn't matter if the author is black. It's not about me it's all about story because even though I am black I do feel like my story will sell better in there country rather than my country. So it got me kinda wondering do I need to start my own book publishing company?
It largely depends on your goals and your earnings. Contact a business lawyer for the best steps forward.
@@DaleLRoberts Yes I called them and they told me they can only publish my book if I was Hispanic. At first they was going to publish my book when I told them I have a lot of Mexican characters and Puerto Rican characters, but when I told them I am black she told me. " Oh, no mommy, we only except Latino authors, but I wish you the best." So then I told her I am going to adapt my book into a screenplay and hire Latino actors since I am telling a Latino story. So she was like well the reason why you have to be Hispanic for us to publish your book is because as a black woman you don't know nothing about us, you can write about us but you don't know how we act, you don't know our tradition, blah, blah, bkah. She went on saying that. But I went to school with mostly Hispanics, I'm talking 💯 Hispanics and only 10% blacks, which means most of my friends were Hispanics. I was so hurt because I am taking up grammar and punctuation course , writing a screenplay, and planning on producing my book by turning my books into a movie series hiring Latino actors. But it's okay because I found a publishing company and they told me they take any race of authors, they told me that they have black authors, white authors, and Spanish. So I don't know what was the problem with that Latino publishing company it sounds like they're discriminating.

Sure. I’d recommend getting with a business attorney to figure out what you can and can’t do.
Although a few years old, this was very interesting. I thought about an LLC but decided to wait until my book sales generates more revenue. I heard the name drop at 13:20 the one and only Roberto Blake.

In California LLC cost $800 per year. To start a company a person needs to file with the state before a bank will give you an account. I prefer to be my own publisher in my name.

Check with your city about having a home based business. Depending on the city there are restrictions.
Hey Dale! Your UA-cam channel has been a treasure trove of info! I was wondering if you could clarify if when publishing through Ingram spark, you have to have your own publishing company/imprint?

Well, you CAN do that. If you buy your ISBN, then use a DBA of some sort. And, I recently discovered, IngramSpark has free ISBNs for US account holders. In that instance, you don’t need to list a publisher on the imprint.
No, I don't want to know 'how', rather I would like to know if it's advantageous to do so for the Author.
It all comes down to money and not getting ripped off by publisher.
Publishers don't have to report sales to you, they're suppose to, but many do not, thus many new Authors get ripped off, makes huge sales, and never know about it.
So, the only question there should be is does creating your own publishing company put you in direct line of pay?

You can function with or without a publishing imprint. You'll still get your pay whether you're a sole proprietor or a business. Publisher WILL give you your sales reports and I don't know of any platform that'd withhold that info from you.

I publish my books as Hatterstown-authors based on our local town ( Atherstone)in England that was famous for making hats. I have a logo also. I guess that the rules are different in America. I am also publishing a friend's book under the banner of Hatterstown.

What do you use to scan your receipts? Is what you use to scan your receipts linked to any particular bookkeeping software?
Genius Scan. And, I simply store them in a cloud and file them away for when I do taxes. I’m sure QuickBooks probably has integration with apps like this.

No, not at all. when you publish via Amazon KDP, you retain all rights to your book. You are free to publish anywhere you want.

Question if I have self published 3 books but I want to turn it into a publishing business, when I publish for other authors will they need an isbn or will it make a difference if it will still be under my business name? Could they still use the free one on kdp? I hope that makes sense.
You could still use the free ISBNs whether you use your company's imprint or not. Me, personally? I'd rather own the ISBN too. Just a matter of how you want to run your business.

Hey Dale, I'm trying to figure out if I can just file a DBA as my "publishing company" and get an EIN for now, since I don't have any book profits or business assets since I'm literally starting out in the publishing game. I think it would be awesome if you could do a video where you speak to a CPA and a business lawyer about the option of filing a DBA as the self publishing company and whether or not getting an EIN for the DBA is a do-able option for a first-timer like me who doesn't have enough money to create a LLC for their self-publishing company, but wants to keep spending and saving for my self publishing hustle separate from my personal bank account. I've been doing some google searches and some people say you can have an EIN for the DBA for self-publishing but I don't know the tricks of the publishing trade. I've seen videos of self published authors who have filed an LLC, but none have mentioned filing a DBA and getting an EIN for the DBA as another way to go about it for those who can't afford or maybe don't want to go the LLC route

There’s so many factors to account for. You’d basically need to update all assets as copyright of your company. Consult an attorney for advice the best suits your needs.

Also when going though for example publishing though Amazon do you have a lot or little freedom for how the book is made. For example format size of the book and or shape of book. Also if book can have several pictures in it
Yes, but it's a steep learning curve getting to the point of creating an interior for publishing. That's going to be like that on ALL platforms. And, yes, you can put several pictures in your book. But, keep in mind, the larger the file, the less you get in profits.

Step 5: There is no shortage of business books that prioritize the relegation of tasks. In other words, it is better to hire other people to do the technical work, while you reserve more time to do the actual work at hand.
