Tricking our 2017 Ford F-350 into turning on 7-way plug charging circuit

  • What I thought would be a simple wiring job to send 12V power to our Jackery Explorer 1000 or ICECO powered cooler while driving in our 2017 Ford F-350 turned into quite the ordeal.
The first thing I did was to connect and Anderson connector on one end, then feed power and ground into a 7-way connector to ground and the Auxiliary 12V Charging circuit (1 o’clock position if looking at the truck plug). No output. I knew there might be some “smarts” involved with the truck, but never knew they would be so involved. After searching the internet and posting on a few groups, I did learn a few things:
    1. Truck has to be running.
    2. Truck needs to “sense” that a trailer is connected.
    3. Brake needs to be applied for a second or two to open the charging circuit.
I tested this by connecting a trailer and then connecting the Jackery Explorer 1000 and boom, it started charging! Now to figure out what the truck needed to “see” for a trailer. I started with an LED light connected between the trailer brake output circuit (5 o’clock position) and ground (7 o’clock position). The truck now came up with a message on the dash “Trailer Connected”. I could adjust the brake gain up and down as normal so I figured this was the ticket. Nope. Still no output.
I then added lights to left/right turn/brake and that was it! After I shot the video, I tested with the light removed from the trailer brake control position, and determined that it was not necessary. So just to be clear, from what I saw, you just need turn/brake lights installed to trick the truck into turning on the charging circuit.
Here is an update to our solution. We bought this adapter that tricks the truck using built-in resistors. www.amazon.com...

I got a 12v outlet waterproof outlet from Amazon and run a wire to upfitter 6 and changed the switch to have power any time the switch is on. And that allows you to also run chest refrigerators air compressor and other 12v accessories

Did you think of just switching pins to the running light pin? It's also a 30amp fuse and all you would need it rewire your plug.

I found it very annoying not having constant power to the hot trailer wire. When we RVing and boondocking and it's cool enough for the furnace but not wanting to run my little generator, with one RV battery, the furnace only runs until about 5 AM. It would be nice to be able to start the truck with my remote and have power going to the RV battery which needs 10.5 volts for the furnace to run. I can now do something to fix the problem.

Hi great video. How long does it charge(average) your jackery from 50percent to 100percent?

This location does not charge as fast as the 110V outlet inside the truck, but it is a convenient spot and we can keep the Jackery topped off.

Hook it to upfitters 5 or 6, move the fuse and you can have power back there truck on or off.
