American Bandstand 1967 -Beatles, Monkees, or Raiders movie?- It Takes Two, Marvin Gaye & Kim Weston

  • The Beatles had 2 movies by this time in ‘67, “A Hard Day’s Night” and ”Help!”. The Monkees would release the infamous “Head” in ’68. As far as I know, Paul Revere and the Raiders never released a movie, but it would have been interesting if they had. The final score, Dick, was the Beatles 7, Raiders 5, and Monkees 2.
    Here the kids dance to Marvin and Kim’s awesome duet. It was recorded in late ’65, released in May ’66, and finally hit #14 in January of ’67. Kim left Motown shortly after it hit, but it’s success led to Marvin Gaye teaming up with Tammi Terrell. Marvin and Tammi had several hits together like “Ain’t Nothing Like The Real Thing“, and “You’re All I Need To Get By” before her untimely death in 1970.
    It Takes Two: AB Regulars Duets in this clip- Stan Sobern and Marcia Silverman (competing in the dance contest later in this episode), Frank Vanderpuil and Peggy Waggoner, and up on the riser with Bernie Kates, the young man dancing so hard his shirt gets untucked, is Karen Sudlow. (Thank you Don Sanuskar for these names)
    …..And speaking of American Bandstand dancers and Beatles movies, in exactly one month (March 11) Dick Clark will show the kids film of the Beatles ”Strawberry Fields” and ”Penny Lane”. The Beatles had disappeared for several months and re-emerged looking and sounding completely different. The change was shocking to the Bandstand kids and not well received. To be fair, their new look and sound were revolutionary, especially for the time. But one dancer, when asked what he thought, said “I thought it was great”. I don’t know his name, but you can see him at 3:06 in this clip.
    Here is video of that exchange from the 2000 ABC documentary, “The Beatles Revolution”:

    I LOVVVVVE this song, the video and everyone in it! Such a great song for dancing. I realize I just posted last week about this, but I have my headset on, cranked up, and it's a gas! You guys were so blessed to live where you could dance on AB. Where I lived you waited for school dances, which weren't often and there sure weren't any teen dance clubs around. All these clips can sure put a smile on my face!

    i love 60`s girls. It took months for people to understand the "New Beatles", some kids started to listen more Herman Hermitts or The Monkees, in the beginning of 1967 Beatles, Stones and other british bands were kinda more for an 17/25 year old market

    There was another reason why Kim Weston left Motown. Her husband, William Mickey Stevenson (Motown's A&R chief) accepted a staff producer position at MGM Records in mid 1967. Mickey felt that Motown would never make Kim a priority artist whereas MGM did make such a promise. While Kim did indeed cut several great sides for MGM and Mickey launched the Venture Records subsidiary at MGM, big successes didn't come their way.

      NEW GROOVES RADIO that is great insight. What I read was that she had “differences” with Motown, left and sued them. What you’re saying makes a lot more sense. You can’t blame her for going for it at MGM. Thank you for the comment!

      The Monkees were in no level with Beatles. The comparison was silly, but to each his own. The Monkees were a fabricated group, from a t.v. audience but had some sweet songs.

    Paul Revere and the Raiders were the house band on Dick Clark's "Where The Action Is " TV show.
    Putting them, and the Monkees in the same class as the Beatles was a joke.
    Dick Clark was always pushing and promoting acts that were signed with DCP.

    Hi AARON and thanks for this clip and the enhanced audio. "It Takes Two" has always been one of my favorite records. Interesting how this hit record as well as the year 1967 would mark Kim's departure from Motown after suing Berry Gordy over royalties. Kim was black balled after her Motown departure and never quite achieved the success she was due...Such a talent! Also interesting how some of the kids actually preferred Paul Revere & the Raiders and even the Monkees over the Beatles. I think that 2018 has forgotten and has underestimated how big those bands were and what a significant part they played in pop culture. (Wondering if that's DON smiling into the camera at the start of this clip at about 0:10?)

    • @YCDTI
      @YCDTI  6 років тому +3

      mrob75 when it comes to the 60’s, I think you and I are kindred spirits. I was shocked this song took a year to catch on and only made it to #14. Kim should’ve stayed, who knows where her career would’ve gone if she had. That’s not Don at :10, but you can see him here dancing in the back by the podium at several places in the clip. I can’t tell who he’s dancing with.

    • @dancerdon9175
      @dancerdon9175 6 років тому +8

      Aaron and Mario -- I'm at 1:51 in front of the podium dancing with Roni Menacker. This is a significant video on so many levels. The guy at 0:10 is Bernie Keats (sp?), one of Karen Sudlow's early dance partners (also seen on the riser both dancing together in perfect synchronicity)! Many of the 1967 Swing Dance contest semi-finalists and finalists are seen here dancing with partners they did not enter the dance contest with. Frank Vanderpuil and Peggy Waggoner are seen dancing together on set however Frank and Judy Michaud entered and won the contest. In Aaron's American Bandstand Dance Contest 1967 and Jeff's ABdancers American Bandstand 1960's dancer 49 Karen is dancing with Jeff Hight as a semi-finalist. The same is true for Bernie, Olivia "Liver" Favela, and her sister, all three dancing with different partners in the dance contest. An excellent example of how we 60's regulars frequently changed partners in mid-stream during tapings. Stan Sobern and Marcia Silverman as well as Robin Morris and Mick Tisherman are seen both on set and as finalists in the dance contest. On a sad note RIP Karen, Bernie, Judy and Frank. On a lighter note, "It Takes Two" is one of my favorite tunes as well. Marvin Gaye performed this song on Bandstand ... singing along with a mannequin in Kim Weston's stead. I wonder if footage from that episode exists?

      Hi Aaron...O.K. Now I found Don....Don had like a cool "strut" to his dancing! And so agree about Kim Weston...We could have had A LOT more hits from her.

    • @YCDTI
      @YCDTI  6 років тому +2

      Thank you for all this good information Don!..especially Bernie’s name (I looked everywhere for that) I was about 90% sure you were dancing with Roni, but I couldn’t see a clear shot of her. What an “All-Star” group here! I see you throwing your arms up at 1:53. I wonder if you are the first dancer to “raise the roof”? I’d love to see Marvin Gaye sing with a mannequin, lol. I wonder if Kim Weston had already left Motown by then. Thanks again! -Aaron

      Hi Don....Lovin' all the detailed tid bits you provide here regarding the dancers. You knew MANY of them! Which brings me to this question: Did many of you attend school together (?) Or did you come from certain areas around LA(?) And LOVE the comment about the Kim Weston "mannequin" LOL...You could only get away with something like that in the 50s and 60s....(Also, very sad to learn about some of these kids' passing...Too young to be gone so soon.) Thanks, Don!

    One thing I always liked about American bandstand it try to promote normality with wholesomeness and judeo-christian values. Unlike the counterculture 40%, the 60's were some turbulent times. Every decade has its good points and bad.
