    Over the last 4 years I have been studying Spanish. I use it every single day and It is basically second nature. About 3 days ago I started learning Portuguese for the first time and I have fallen in love once again with another language. I really love your channel and I will definitely be using the videos from Easy Languages that you have contributed to for Portuguese. Thank you!
    P.S Although it is still early in my learning, I am not sure whether to base my Portuguese on the Portuguese spoken in Portugal or in Brazil. Both versions sound beautiful, I want to travel to both countries in the future, etc.

    Ha! I had exactly the problem in Spanish that I was trying to get every word. Meanwhile my wife remembered enough high school Spanish and was more attentive to body language and what was happening and she'd have to explain things to me. Then I got into Brazilian Portuguese and now it's European Portuguese which makes me feel like I'm starting over. I'm doing Preply for regular conversation but would be happy to talk to someone who needs English practice.

    One strategy that I use is to watch UA-cam videos in Portuguese. There are so many that a person can watch a video about a subject that is especially interesting for that person. And I have noticed that there are many Portuguese UA-cam videos by people whose first language is not Portuguese. There are several Americans, a Korean, a Russian and even a Canadian. I find people whose first language is not Portuguese, are the easiest to understand. Maybe they don't use as many colloquialisms or maybe their vocabulary is not as vast but I find listening to these people and understanding them gives me the confidence to try listening to Lisbon-born actress, Alba Baptista. If anyone can understand her Portuguese, they have mastered the language.

  • @innarimmer3339

    You described my problem! All because I'm studying all by myself, but I don't have practice! And it's such a shame! Because I live among native speakers! Those short conversations I have sometimes, I do what you described above - I'm trying to understand everything perfectly and I fail, panic and switch to English (((

    glad somebody's putting some focus on the importance of listening comprehension! everybody's always so concerned with speaking skills, before even perfecting their listening comprehension. it is so much harder and more important than people think! especially when it comes to European Portuguese: it's harder to understand than most languages, to me at least.

    • @michaelc.1710
      @michaelc.1710 4 роки тому +2

      I wonder whether that's because listening comprehension is easier with other languages? I've been learning Portuguese for around a year and I can read and express myself relatively well but I still struggle so much with listening. The reason I wonder whether it's a particular Portuguese thing is because even though I've never studied Spanish, I can understand spoken Spanish better than spoken European Portuguese just from the similarity of the vocabulary. The European Portuguese accent is just so hard to hear with it's nasality, stress on consonants, slurring and fluidity. I'd liken it to learning RP or US English and then moving to somewhere like Glasgow or Liverpool. You would definitely struggle.

    • @martinrea8548
      @martinrea8548 4 роки тому +5

      @@michaelc.1710 Very true. I wonder did the Portuguese deliberately develop their language to be difficult to understand so that the Spanish couldn't understand them.

      @@martinrea8548 nah, we just got a lot of invasions from different cultures, our language is latin based with a lot of words from other cultures like muslims, and it evolved over time to what it is now

    • @ianstobie
      @ianstobie 3 роки тому +2

      @@martinrea8548 I read on a Brazilian site somewhere that the two languages (PT and BR Portuguese) started diverging very rapidly in the 1820s. What changed fastest wasn't the language in Brazil, but in Portugal! It sped up, and the existing tendencies towards vowel modification based on surrounding sounds and syllable deletion intensified. These are precisely the things that make spoken Portuguese difficult, at least to me.
      There was a lot going on at the time - the aftermath of the Napoleonic wars, which had seen French and British troops in the country, the return of the royal court with its hangers-on from Brazil to Portugal, the rapid growth of Porto and Lisbon, a civil war, the birth of Fado ... the list goes on.
      I think that when unwelcome outsiders are around it may well be that native speakers don't mind excluding them by making their speech more difficult. But that's just a guess.

    The bit at the start is so true. It’s so easy to fall into the trap of trying to translate every word and end up falling behind in the sentence which leads to brain freeze and you end up hearing nothing! I don’t have enough access to listening so always find this hardest when I’m in Portugal. Will try some of these tips.

    If you listen to the videos In the mood for Coimbra 1 and 2 on UA-cam observe the English of the speaker Anton. It absolutely perfect the point about this guy is he is NOT English he is Philippino he told me. I speak Tagalog and he has none of the Philippino mistakes that I know they make. I used to write English statements forms and stuff and leave some of these in as tiny smudges to make the script look more authentic but still good. Anyway if he can do English this good the I/we should be able to do portuguese as good. I personally try to get everything done as perfectly as I can so I don't have to come back and fix it.

    lmao I'm a native portuguese speaker from mozambique and I don't know how exactly I got into your channel but I've watched over 6 videos in less than 12 hours kkkk.. I'm making a comment in this specific video because the first sentence caught me by surprise.. That's kinda what happens to me with english.. I can understand youtube videos perfectly, but it gets tricky in movies and on the real world.... Your videos are quite easy to understand and I don't even need to translate it.
    Anyway.. I know your main focus isn't teaching english... I'm just learning more about my own language and I enjoy when I see someone else trying to master my native language.. it's indeed a beautiful language but everyone in this world needs to speak english right? kkkk
    Agora que terminei de escrever é que me dei conta que você também fala e escreve português e poderia ter escrito tudo em português kkkk... dentro de alguns meses vou para portugal entrar "pra" um curso de Espanhol e se precisar de algumas expressões ou quiser saber um pouco mais do português de moçambique é só dizer hehe
    Boa sorte em Portugal :)

Not a whole lot of words for the first time but encouraging. I would REALLY like a native speaker buddy to talk with once a week. That would be fabulous. And the third strategy, though distorted, I think I can manage because I learn a lot of music this way too. It is another way to stretch my mind around the language. Thanks so much for these tips!

    Just found your channel Liz and it's helping me get motivated to learn european portuguese! Really helpful videos, they're super clear and fun to follow. I love your passion keep it up!
    I'm a beginner but I really want to become fluent so I can talk to my girlfriend in her native language and join the conversations with her family and friends.
    One problem I seem to face is losing the motivation after a while, I would learn and practice for a few weeks and then drop off. This has happened on and off in the past 2 years, I think its just down to my self-discipline.
    So I am wondering what ways have you (or people you know) found to keep the motivation and make the effort all year-round?

I knew about News In Slow Spanish/French/Italian and the website is so beautiful and appealing and I wished I could find something for European Portuguese, but I think you just helped me with that :D Thanks! I try a different method when writing notes: I try 5w's approach and then compare my answers to the second listening of the recording. For now I use PRACTICE PORTUGUESE shorties for listening, which are divided into levels A1-C1, each shorty is 2 minutes, so it's a good length. A lot of the shorties are also about Portuguese culture, so I learn about the country too not just to understand the spoken language.
