  • My neighbor was ready to retire his 2007 Hyundai Sonata. I told him I'd give him $300 which was more than the junk yard was willing to pay. The engine had been replaced early in its life so I'm assuming this engine had around 300k on it. I sold the car to someone who took an interest in it.

These old Hyundai Sonatas from 1999 thru 2010 are great cars that wont suffer of engine issues that the newer models have. I own a 1999 Hyundai Sonata GLS fully loaded with the 2.5 Delta V6 engine and the F4A42 Mitsubishi built automatic transmission and it's been a great car. Currently has 152k miles and it has never left me stranded. I'm keeping it till the wheels fall off.

Do you have any recommendations or things I should look out for ?

@@faraz2128only thing I’d tell u is just expect small electronic things to malfunction at times. Stuff like dashboard lights or maybe the key fob. Really nothing serious, just normal things that come with age. Otherwise these cars live forever, just the other day I started mine after being buried in the snow and sitting for a year. Just needed a jumpstart and it drove great.

The higher mileage cars don't scare me. Got over 200k on every car I owned. I have over 300k on my olds alero. They dont' seem to get less reliable as they age either. I still drive them on long trips.

@@cameronwhite3595Helpful Hint: never tell the Hyundai dealership when going for warranty work that your're using your car for Uber/Lyft or deliveries. They'll deny coverage if they find out. The newer Sonatas aren't as reliable as the pre 2011 models. Engine & transmission failure is common around 100k miles and the dealerships are notorious for refusing to honor the 10 year/100k mile warranty. Another channel- Scotty Kilmer- master mechanic- has videos on the Hyundai & Kia problems because they share the same powertrain suppliers.

About a month ago I just bought an 04 with 166,000 MI it's only needed very minor repairs leak in the intake PCV valve and rear shock and it's good to go I would recommend the v6s of these older ones but the Hyundai's are actually very reliable and cheap

I would like to find a 6 cyl Asian midsize car around this vintage. Good mpgs and I don’t have to worry about it rusting out in the WI road salt or if I hit a deer (I live in the sticks and commute 35 miles to/from work)

Did the prior owner say if these high miles were from highway commuting? They say highway mileage only wears the engine 10% of the wear of stop and go city driving.

I know he bought the car when it was not very old and kept it until I got it. It had an engine problem very early on in its life after that was taken care of it was a very solid car. It was driven daily for work a combination of city and highway miles I would say probably 75 % highway based on where he lived, the only time it got anything was when it broke.

The NF Sonata and the cars related to it mechanically (second gen Santa Fe, first gen Azera, second gen Sedona, second gen Sorento) are extremely ruggedly engineered vehicles. They never drove suuuper well, as Hyundai-Kia were still making suspensions that somehow crashed over every bump and floated like a ship at sea even when brand new, but the Lambda V6 is a very strong engine (the starter is a PITA) in pre-GDI form, good for well over 200k miles, the transmissions are very strong, and they are fairly rust resistant. It was Hyundai's 1992 Camry without the nice interior. Speaking of, the interiors are very cheap but resiliant, the door chime is extremely annoying, the sound systems were total garbage even new, with all the clarity and depth of a circa-2005 flip phone MIDI speaker. But the major mechanicals and body integrity are fantastic, and aside from some 2.4l oil use issues, solid bets. Stick with the 3.3 or 3.8l versions of those cars (3.8 came in the Sedona and Azera, the Santa Fe also had the pretty crappy old Mitsu-based 2.7 in mid trims) and you have a solid, zero-resale, often overlooked and disposed of gas guzzler of a vehicle that can live as long as most 90s Toyotas with similar running costs.
