Tip I learned. If you don’t want the crust to have an air pocket between filling, cook the apples in the cinnamon and sugar mix in a pan before . Then put it in the pie crust.
Vanilla to the mix is very different. But I'm sure your twist on it tastes great. That's why I'm sure it's your sons fave. Hence an apple pie birthday cake..
Dude, I was just thinking about an apple pie today and I just saw this video, so... I will make it, because it looks sooooo gooooood! Appreciate the recipe!
My Friend,...375 degrees fahrenheit for the first 20 minutes and then reduce the heat to 325 degrees fahreneheit, for the remainder of the hour to an added fiften minutes if required, works...here...for a perfect pie, perfect results, no burn on the crust...lovely crust...but, when I make my pie here, below sea level here, it is 6 inches deep with apples, it is definitely with lots of cinnamon....and a good friend taught me to place butter or margarine under the top crust in small dollops...and then sugar the top with white sugar immediately upon removing from the oven. Your recipe is divine...so is mine...with mine, I use Green Granny Smith Apples, sometimes peeled, and sometimes not. My crust recipe, is my secret...and may become a wedding gift to someone in the future. My Mother gave it to me....aren't we Wow...
I really like your videos and the information you provide really useful stuff for the average home cook like me, music wise not my cup of tea but in any case thanks for sharing
Looks like an awesome apple pie. Thanks for sharing some family secrets to make everyone's holiday better! Love the sound of the fork coming through the pie at the end when you were eating. Looks delicious. Glad you're showing some baking as well. Thanks man!
Can't believe I missed this vid I watch all of them. This looks freak in AWESOME and I bet it taste AWESOME a very hardy thick pie with thin apples kootoos to mom. I've made 2 Apple pies in my life and both sucked they were warm and fell apart and thin crap lol after watching this now I know why ! Thanks brother I'll try yours next time. P.S love your tee shirt love Queen 💜
I'm so psyched about this one!! I own a frozen custard shop and our vanilla custard is to die for! I mean I might be a little biased but...😜 Anyway I have been looking for a killer pie recipe to pair with my vanilla custard😍
You know what? I love how the juice oozes out. It's soo homemade and full of love. I'm a big fan of slicing the apple thin also. What is it with some slicing the apples chunky? Ends up too hard.. And I know just because it may look a little flat, it does not affect the yummy flavour at all. Looks delicious, just like my nans. 🖒
Just finished watching yr Chicken Soup recipe and checked out yr other vids, the recipes & dishes spoke to my heart and I couldnt clicked on the subscribe any faster. Love love love yr work ❤❤❤. PS We use Granny Smith's in New Zealand, nice crunch and tarty
So happy to hear that! Ironically I screwed up the dough this year! Lol. My mom wanted to make 4 pies and I thought it was too much, so I cut the butter bigger than I normally do cause I was doing too many things, the butter dishes distrubute properly and basically fried the dough while cooking making it nearly inedible. Nailed the dinner though! Glad you had better success than I did. Trying to become a better baker for the channel! Merry Christmas and happy holidays!! Hope to see you around these parts more!
Looks amazing. On my side I usually used a 50/50 mix off cinnamon and allspice. And a good pinch of salt. However I am going to try your family’s Recipe . I’m new on your Chanel and so far everything looks good. Keep it up. Stéphane from Montreal.
Hey Steve, or any of the NOT ANOTHER COOKING SHOW community, how well do you think this will work out if I got a bunch of rhubarb to get through? I've never used it before and am wondering if it works well with cinnamon (and brown sugar)
Please do not apologise for a perfect pie you make it so good looking and I know it taste like the bomb with all that cinnamon yum ! Everything I've ever seen you make Steve looks so good.I tell ya if this pie was in a pie contest you would walk away with the ribbon brother.
Apple pie is one of those things that are kind of family specific. I would say that is way too much cinnamon, we like to taste apple, not cinnamon. But that is for my family. We also throw the apples on the stove top and partially cook the filling before it goes in the pie. We hate crunchy apples in our pie. All-in-all it looks like a good family pie. Oh, and the crust looks nice a flaky, too. One tip: cut the apples in half and scoop out the seeds with a melon baller. There is way less waste that way, and it goes very fast.
David Kuhns crunchy apples are the worst!! Empires are good at getting soft so they never end up crunchy. And I know that looks like a lot. But I urge you to test it once, casually, because you can still taste the Apple and the cinnamon isn’t taking over. It’s a ton of apples so it seasons them perfectly. But you’re right, there is no right way to do it, everyone has their methods and preferences which is why I love cooking! Thanks for the thoughtful comment!
Yay. I found someone who hates crunchy hard apples 8n their pie. It's soo awful. My nan use to do the same. Partially cook on the stove top. Which dom what I've seen on UA-cam is rarely done. I don't like too much cinnamon either. But I'm sure it's a yum family tradition thing that you grow to love, when you have grown up with it. I'm sure your pie tastes delicious too. I'm hearing you about using the melon baller and less waste. It does vanish real fast. Why my grandma use to make her pies 4 at a time in a roasting pan. Those big rectangle ones. She had a large family with many grandchildren. That she cooked for on special occasions. Got to love those European grandmothers. They sure knew how to cook it up large..
First of all I just want to congratulate you and thank you for creating such a great channel!! I have learned a lot and many of your recipes are common staples of my household now. I wanted to ask you if you have ever tried this recipe with a Gluten-free flour(?)..and if so, how did it work out? Thanks again 🙏🏼
Hi, I love the videos so far. I have a question. Did you go to culinary school or is everything you learn was from family cooking? I'm thinking if changing or adding cooking to my career path. I love cooking.
Very cool and simple recipe! I think I might try it next week. One thing I was surprised about was no egg wash or anything on the top crust. Would that add anything? Keep up the awesome videos my man!
The egg wash really helps with browning, and creates a shiny look. You could do it. But we literally have never done it. I feel like it’s a little flakier without but I’m not like a baking genius so I don’t want say don’t do it. I just find it to be an unnecessary thing to do when I’m making 3 pies plus everything else. It just sorta affects aesthetics mainly. Thanks for watching bud!
Me too. I just had to see. It still creeps me out to think about that kid and if he's alright. All the classic mistakes were NOT made in making this pie. But did mama really use that much cinnamon.
Thank you so much for all the cold tips and for simplifying apple pie! I use Jonagold (cross between a Jonathan and a Golden)! And as always - smokin' tunes!
I can’t tell you how good this comment made me feel. I thought it was gonna be impossible to foster a community like that but all you guys are the greatest. Thankful! Thanks for stopping by Mikel!!
Classic 80% -I bet -recipe. Either you cook the apples 1st or you just mix and dump like this. Finished product looked crazy but tastes great. I can't tell you how many people tell me I use too much cinnamon. Did you mom really use that much cinnamon. This was not my mother's or my grandfathers apple pie. I made changes by slicing the apples thin and adding extra sugar and tons of cinnamon because as a kid I didn't like the big chunks of apples I do today. But I am probably the sane age as your mom. I love your recipes.
Yes you absolutely can. I know, it’s tough thing to manage, it’s all about the water amount. the more water you put in the easier the dough will be to work with. But it will be less crisp and flaky. I try to make it’s as dry as I can, knowing it might be a little hard to roll out but the crust will be better. So use enough water that you can just bring it together into a ball. Then let is rest for for longer than 30 minutes. Like you can rest it up to a day. It will help it relax and make it easier to roll out. Let me know how it goes. It’s tricky but I know you can do it.
You need an apple peeler real bad haha. It's the only uni-tasker I own because it's SO worth it. The ones that peel, core and cut into spirals. Pie looks great!
Doood. Rad as always, great work with the pie. Those apples looked ridiculous, I would have eaten the whole bowl and there would be no pie. Looking forward to the next one.
Awesome recipe. Have you ever frozen the butter and then used a box grater to shred the butter? I do that with buttermilk biscuits and pie crust. That was one of my mother's tricks.
That’s true...but I don’t know many people who measure by weight in America. I’ll probably eventually adopt a measure by weight when baking policy. But I don’t fancy myself a baker. So anything you see from me in that world right are just the things I know well. I plan on developing that skill of mine as the show goes on
Chewy Lewy thanks man! I wish I could say the same for my pie on thanksgiving. Mom made me make 4, I rushed the dough, cut the butter too thick, and didn’t break it up enough, so there were these big spots of butter, I knew it was gonna be f’d but had too much to do so I let it fly...turned out the butter fried the dough to a inedible crispy crust. Embarrassing but that’s how you learn to never f that up again.
love your videos even though i don't do gluten or sugar. but why are you crouching? cannot you raise your tripod? consider doing the qigong horse stance then if you have to lower yourself. it will build up qi and muscle. but i'd raise the tripod. thanks for making cool vids
I haven't tried it yet. I hope it's not chunky and hard. I can't stand hard chunky pieces of Apple in my pie. I would have to bake it for longer. Risking burning the pastry.. if st8ck to this one over Gordon's any day.

Just made this recipe with my daughter, and it turned out amazing! Thank you so much. Absolutely love your channel!
Hi Steve, my wife and I made your mash potato dish last night OMG 😲 freaking amazing going too have to make them for thanksgiving.

I tried it too.

Oh my gosh!! This looks so yummy and I can't wait to make it!! I want to know if you ever make Berry pies/cobblers ☺
Tami B as far as pies, i know this, pecan and key lime. Never really got into berry pies. But I’m sure I’ll dip my toes eventually
Oooh a mixed berry pie is pretty killer. Worth trying. Key lime is to die for tho!!! Never any pumpkin huh?

Awesome pie! 🥧 Never heard of Empire apples 🍎 before. Sounds interesting though! 👍 *SHARED*
Thanks Terri!
Could I use a food processor for the crust? I've never been very good at pie crust. BTW, I came over from your comment on Tasty.

Haha, I kind enjoy it actually. But I'm old fashioned! lol
how many apples is a bag? thanks alot
Im pretty sure its a 4-5 lbs bag, maybe 8-12 apples depending on the size
Doood. Rad as always, great work with the pie. Those apples looked ridiculous, I would have eaten the whole bowl and there would be no pie. Looking forward to the next one.
Haha, Thank you!! They were delicious.

Is that a 9" pie pan ?
Yo the best way to measure flour is by weight. One cup of flour is equivalent to 120 grams or 4.25 ounces.
That’s true...but I don’t know many people who measure by weight in America. I’ll probably eventually adopt a measure by weight when baking policy. But I don’t fancy myself a baker. I'd say that bottle crust is a bit too thin, and you should blind bake it first. That's why you ended up with that flat soggy mess.

why so much butter?
Stormxlr it’s what mom does...helps thicken the sauce I guess
I'd stick with gordon's apple pie ...untouchable
But is it? Cute comment btw
