Fantastic analysis after a fantastic game, thanks Tom. Having obtained a degree in Sports Science I am a statistic sceptic too. However your extrapolation of those impressive numbers and where we stand against Liverpool and City gives me hope that Angeball is not naive but revolutionary. Last season Ange established his back 5. This season I think he has established our Midfield 3. Once we get our front 3 fit and firing, then we can start chasing silverware. COYSX!
@@stephensmith4240 I think an analysis of trends may be more relevant than snapshots, but that was an impressive marshalling of stats by @TomBarclayjournalist
Exactly... His experience and past wins, Celtic etc. They are starting to transform, I don't expect any trophies but I think they developing quite fast and let's see. #COYSFOREVER
Another great analysis Tom, what a game yesterday! Some of my takeaways: - Solanke and Johnson are on fire! 3 in 3 for Big Dom and 4 in 4 for Brennan is so encouraging, especially considering their “underwhelming” starts to the season. I was very impressed by the team’s ability to cope with Sonny’s absence. I actually think Timo Werner was fairly decent besides the two missed chances as well. - Micky van de Ven: WHAT A PLAYER! I would argue he’s our best player currently. No other player has as big an impact on the way we play than VDV. I can’t think of a center back in world football who can do what VDV does on a weekly basis. - So glad to see the youngsters start getting minutes, albeit small cameos at the end. Bergvall and Sarr made an instant impact yesterday! Lovely cross from Bergvall and a nice flick on from Sarr for Solanke’s goal. Mikey Moore was encouraging as well. I thought his shot at the very end was going top bins, and I nearly jumped out of my seat! - Finally, special shout out to Vicario! Our xG against on the season is about 10.57, but we’ve only conceded 6 goals. This shows in part how good Vicario’s shot stopping has been. I feel like his passing out from the back has improved as well. Long may it continue! COYS 🤍
Agree on most but the point I want to make is on Werner, I think he was much better than people give him credit for. He just couldn’t finish (which admittedly is a recurring theme), but was a threat throughout
@@TomBarclayjournalist I think most people still expect Werner to produce the enormous numbers we saw from him at Leipzig, and that leads to this perception that he is constantly underperforming. The fact is he isn’t the same player he used to be, so we should adjust our expectations to suit what he is now: a squad player at best. I wasn’t expecting a 10/10 performance from Werner yesterday. I would’ve been happy with a slightly above average game from him, and I think we got that despite his missed chances. That being said, I still prefer giving Mikey Moore those minutes!
Thanks Tom, excellent info. Yes a small data set ours including Leicester and Everton. No doubt we more data which depending upon outcomes may further inform of the underlying quality of our squad (eg Liverpool probably having better underlying quality). Maybe ultimately sends message to Levy to back Ange with higher quality?

Great breakdown! Just on that point on clinical vs non-clinical players, have you seen Sonny's goals vs xG? Whether he's right for Ange's system is another question, but he's one of the most clinical players in all of Europe
I agree it probably wasn’t a red card however I also understand why the ref gave it in real time and why VAR didn’t overturn it. The Intent was there to hurt the player. Yeah he didn’t catch him with the studs but he was showing his studs and Maddison is lucky he didn’t catch him properly.
I'm interested in seeing where Kulu ranks in terms of chances created since the start of last season. His assists numbers betrays him, mad that he didn’t get any assist yesterday after 9 chances created.

I remain committed to the Ange-project. However..., beware that Brentford was missing 5 starters, Quarabag arrived after a traffic delay where they clearly were negatively affected, like did they even win one duel...?!! Also that the Coventry victory really was in the very nick of time. AND, THIS Man United is quite weak or troubled. A receipt on where we stand exactly vs the top teams in the PL will come as we'll play Cityx2, Chelsea (yeah, I think Maresca, Palmer and Nkethie r finally hitting stride) and Liverpool! However, in the meantime, we'll have plenty of matches to slowly grow into this play-style, develop it and start to become prolific. One step at a time, one day at a time, one training at a time. That is how u get there. We'll hopefully improve gradually now and really have to pray to avoid major injuries, especially to key players. (Maddis, MVDV, Son, Brennan, Kulu, Udogie etc.) It could be good this season already, however be aware that we haven't been up against the top teams yet, perhaps bar Arsenal, and then we lost. In truth i honestly dont think Son suits Ange ball, having played his whole career the same way he is finding it difficult to adapt. Ange needs to figure a way so Son can do what he does. Hopefully in time he will build a relationship with Solanke like some of the other players are already, like Kulu. But i do feel we will play faster and better without him now. Hard to say because he has done so much for us, but we are moving on.
I m thinking Son can play the sort of role Rooney played in the final years at United, where he plays more like a 10 or 8. So he can play as the left sided backup for Madders.
This feels a little premature. Son still has so much to give. Perhaps he has lost a yard but he’s got such a great football brain, excellent touch and lethal finishing that I’m sure he’ll have a huge part to play this season
I totally disagree. we play better without him, Ange relies on hot potato football which is very much a requirement for Angeball to work whereas son holds the play too much for Angeball to work effectively
I do actually think we should alternate son and solanke depending on the opposition, son doesn't stretch defenders out wide anymore but he really does get in dangerous positions through the middle and has arguably the best movement of anybody at the club in that position
