Matt will be discussing that in a bonus episode soon, but they used the Predict Wind service, which will survey multiple different forecast and suggest the best route for you to go. We were solely reliant on what we downloaded from our Iridium Go.
We actually wished we had spent more time at sea, we were only worried about the limited time we'd have to spend in the Azores. But down the road on future passages...possibly.
S R I believe they carried extra water bottles. I think I would have waited and fixed the water maker. But they did make the passage with s few gallons left over.
Still being landlocked, people spend a lotta money to get to sea finally. As soon as they are, there should be spent more money to help getting as fast as possible to land again ...? Funny concept, ain't it?
Jessica, you took alot of grief when you put the green canvas on the boat, but I think it is beautiful. The contrast of the green and the blue water is stunning in the video and it is certainly unique. Good choice.
Seared tuna!! Season with salt and pepper and heat a pan with oil to high heat. Cook about a minute a side or so depending on how rare you want the middle. And depending on the thickness of the fillets/steaks. Once done, slice them against the grain with a very sharp knife. Good to go. Easy peasy.
Love following you guys...you did so much work in the yard before you set sail...would love to see a boat tour of what you did right and what you would like to change. Thanks
It's funny, we kind of put the remainder of our boat projects on hold once we started cruising, which is why we haven't done a tour yet....the interior is still incomplete. It's one of our 'winter' projects though, so hopefully we'll have it in tour-shape soon!
What a Great Trip. Congratulations. I use to go to Ireland every year, but I flew. Ireland 🇮🇪 is just Beautiful, it’s changed a lot, be safe‼️👍🇮🇪🇺🇸 Vinny
Good Old Elements made it. I remember the first images you posted of her. It was a lot of work to get Elements in the water. Now you have crossed a Ocean!
Congrats on making it to the Azores! My favorite part of the video was hearing you enjoy the last part of the sail! Looking forward to hearing about the islands.
Hi Todd! The Azores are such beautiful islands that we have not been able to make ourselves leave. Instead of sailing to Ireland and wintering there, we've decided to winter in Terceria instead. 😊
So cool you are going to Ireland. Have relatives in Belfast. I don't think I have seen any of the UA-cam sailing channels land there so it's going good to be great. Thx and congrats on the crossing. Clearly you make a great sailing couple.
Unfortunately, we are staying the Azores for winter and heading North to France and then Norway in late spring. Ireland will have to wait until August of 2019. Matt
"That just blows" For some reason I found it cute when you said that. I could feel your frustration. Cheers, less than 500 miles to go! Drink every time you say "awesome". Actually I didn't hear you say it much, but you said you were. Welcome to land! Enjoy the view...it's a great day!
I noticed the head of your drifter was quite a way from the top of your forestay. I also noticed that the tack was chafing on your bow pulpit. If you were to put about 24 inches of wire on your tack, the drifter would be up where it could catch more wind plus the foot would be less crumpled out of shape from bending over the pulpit.
Great video Guys .... Matt needs new swimming trunks ... Pink doesn't suit him !! LOL .. As ever Jessica, You were lovely ! I can't wait for your Irish videos !! Stay safe !!
First time crossing or twentieth time... Still pretty damn impressive if you ask me.. Congrats on the safe passage.. Oh yeah, and there's nothing wrong with Captain Morgan...
hahaha, "Land sickness!" I was in the Navy for 26 years and spent a lot of time at sea on big Navy ships. We didn't have as much rocking as y'all have but I know exactly what you are talking about. My family thinks I'm nuts when I tell the story of being land sick in P.I.
We had the same wire on our screen doors dad painted them and the front porch brick floor marine grade maroon paint. the screen doors from 1977 are still holding strong so good choice.
Is it strange I feel relieved that you made it safe and sound? Good self control on both the water and rum. Had it been me or Ron White it would be a toss up for filling the tanks with alcohol and carrying some jerry cans of water. Nice job on making an average section of the voyage interesting as always. Enjoy landfall!!
We met a couple in Cuba that converted a water tank into gin storage on their Beneteau. They got it for something like a buck a gallon in Venezuela. Pretty good idea! Matt
Great job guys...hope you find time and parts to fix the water maker but first have a beer or two 32 degrees today in SW Michigan rain on Friday. we have started on the work list for SV Gallivant not as much as last years its a $$$ thing but always a great feeling when you get it done enjoy
This was the second time doing this trip. How did it compare with the first? How do the different boats compare? Which was more "sea kindly" and how do things compare with the aluminum hull vs the fiberglass hull? I'm looking forward to the weather routing episode.
Too hard to say. Our first time was further North and filled with storms ( 4 or 5 boats were lost that year crossing), this time we didn't have wind. The new boat is much more comfortable sailing, but you pay the price of not pointing as well and it's harder to get going in light winds. We are about 20k pounds vs 12,000 in the last boat... big difference. I will say that I don't miss fiberglass. Aluminum is just so reassuring and rock solid with no deck leaks. Mat
You almost made a Goombay Smash there. I used to bartend and we had it on our menu from our travels to St Thomas. Malibu, any dark rum (supposed to be Mount Gay) banana liquor pineapple and orange juice. Basically its a Banana Mama.
Not sure how I missed a week... I think the people who poopoo on Captain Morgan are the same people who crap on Nickel Back :) Rum is Rum - it doesn't have to be their favorite if that what's being served for free :) Merry Christmas from PEI, Bryan.
Glad to see all your hard work is paying off for you 2 , did the previous owners ever cross the ocean with elements or was this her first time , great video :)
Love you guys! Question about doing a long sea voyage with Georgie - does she acclimate to it very well and quickly? What do you do for litter/box for that amount of time at sea? We have a 2 year old Russian Blue cat which we adore, and we're going to be taking her on our boat for the first time (Vancouver, 60+ ft power yacht, not a sailboat), and I'm worried about sea sickness she could have or other potential problems. She'll have tons of space, it's a very large vessel, but other than that we're cat noobies for taking her out to sea for a week or two.
Unfortunately, it seems to depends on the cat. Georgie has gotten sick twice, but usually is completely fine and in control. But, we have friends with cats that get seasick every time they move the boat. I think you're doing it right spending shorter times at the beginning to see how your cat reacts. When at sea, and further than 3 miles away from land, we empty the litter box clumps overboard and fill as needed. The litter box is in a concealed area under our stairs. Matt
There are rum snobs out there, as there are folk who are snobby about other spirits, wine, beer and cider. We all tend to think that what we prefer is the best. Fair winds. ⛵️🇨🇦👌
We landed with a few gallons still in our tank, and about 20 bottles stowed away. Snack food went pretty quickly. Who knew we'd end up so hungry on our crossing? 🙂
LAND A' HOY!!! 🌍 Jessica you seem to be dielectric when it comes to knowing the differents from North, South, East, and West. Also I know Georgie 🐈 loves the water and can swim, but I am curious if they do make life jackets for pets does Georgie have one? And congratulations on making with a few gallons of water left. I hope you guys fixed your water tank.
We have a pet life jacket for the cat, but like us, we typically wear harnesses to keep us on the boat and only our harness/ PFDs in bad weather when we think there is a remote possibility of having to get in a life raft (we've felt the need twice). Matt
Hi Guys, Just found your videos. Did I hear you will be heading for Ireland? Love to hear from you. I live in Donegal, but Ireland is not that big. If you do intend to visit the Green Isle have you any idea where you hope to make land. Wishing you fair winds and safe passage. Niall
Neil, Slight delay... we are staying in Azores for the winter then off to France and Norway in summer. Ireland will have to wait until fall of 2019. See you then. Matt
I'm glad you like your Precision sail. I looked into pricing from them when you posted the video about Precision. What material is your sail made from and how do you feel it performs in relation to your old sail?
The fabric is Challenge Marblehead which we are very happy with. The old yankee was blown out and bad shape, so hard to give an honest comparison vs a well built brand new sail. Matt
You mentioned that you had a chance too try your drifter sail and it actually gave you more speed over the water than your primary sail. Stop and think a minute. Maybe the drifter should become the primary sail as it gave you better speed?

I'd be really careful about using your drifter in anything above 8-9kts TWS. They really are only designed to keep the boat moving along in super light wind (i.e. 0 to 5kts TWS) and the protracted age of that sail would mean it's not at its original design strength. Great video! Thought I saw the above-water portion of a couple of Portuguese Man'o'war when you were looking for dolphins.
It was the typically thing for us.... by the time we finally pull down the headsail and put up the drifter, the wind picked up. We used to do that everytime we rigged a spinnaker. Sit hours not moving only to overpower a spinnaker within 30 minutes of putting it up. Matt
Lots of sailing channels comment on winds being too strong, too weak, from the wrong direction, seas too lumpy, motion too uncomfortable, every passage taking too long, boatspeed too low etc. I have never sailed across an ocean so can't comment, but I wonder if we need to accept whatever conditions prevail... probably easier said than done! Just wondering if it's worth it?!
We always want a fast passage with winds around 15 knts from the stern and no waves. I think we've had those conditions once or twice in 6 years of cruising... but it's always worth it. Matt
