São Miguel AZORES - An Island You Will NEVER Forget (MJ Sailing - EP 90)

  • Listed as one of the most popular travel destinations of 2019, how much do you know about the island of São Miguel in the Azores?
    This week we make the 95 mile sail from Terceria to the harbor of Ponta Delgada in São Miguel. Leaving in the afternoon we plan for an overnight sail, which will have us arriving first thing in the morning. And having been to this island before, we found it quite forgettable. It may have been the constant gray skies and rain, but we didn't care for it too much our first time around.
    Since then there had been a social media boom showcasing all the highlights this 'Green Island' had to offer. So hopping on Yellow Bus Tours for two days, we thought we'd give in another shot. And we are not lying when we say this place has now jumped straight to the top of our favorite places in the world.
    From quaint towns, to hot springs; lush green forest and crater lakes; many of the places we visited felt as if they had been staged for a movie or pulled from a fairy tale. Settle back as we take you on a tour of this unforgettable island nestled in the Atlantic Ocean.
    Much love from the Azores!
    Jessica, Matt & Georgie

    Thank you for that film. My wife and I were on Sao Miguel in December and saw nothing but fog except for the village you showed early in your film. I am glad to know what we missed was there and to see the blue and green lakes, the chapel and the large caldera. Well done. I enjoy being a part of your adventures.

      We sailed to Sao Miguel in 2014 and it rained for the three weeks we were there. We never even left Ponta Delgada. We weren't expecting much and we're hesitant to waste our time on it. Man, we're we surprised with the amazing island we had written off! Give it a second chance, but go within season :)

      I've seriously thought of getting rid of the forward most pulpit and just keeping the aft part that the lifelines connect to. We were looking into getting a Code 0, and the shape of the pulpit protruding forward would have meant a much longer bowsprit. Maybe someday.

    Sulphur hot springs are usually smelly but very healthy:) Nice views of Sete Cidades:)! You should indeed get a residence permit and stay here forever! The best thing about S.Miguel and the Azores in general is that it was kept away from international tourism for many years due to air traffic restrictions. I hope it stays "green" forever! (nothing against tourists, but nature must be protected from over-construction). See you soon and maybe I'll see you one day in my favourite cafe in Ponta Delgada, called Tropical Neptune.

    • @MJSailing
      @MJSailing  5 років тому

      NO WAY!!! We went to Tropical Neptune ALL THE TIME!! It was seriously our favorite hangout, haha. I loved their gin & tonics and Matt likes the Sagres brand Amber Ale they serve. Plus there's always good music playing through the systems. One of the many things we already miss about S. Miguel. (And yes, we want people to discover this island as well, but hope it stays as pristine and untouched as it currently is.)

    What an amazing island. Scenes that look like continental Europe, but not quite. Hot springs that look like what you find in Hawaii or Washington state but different. A very unique place. On another note; I hope you can work in gratuitous shots of Georgie in all your episodes. Of course! One day, when we've tired of the Northern cold, and have a bit saved up, I'd like to buy a very used catamaran in Australia. I just love the sporty cats that come from that area....
      Only issue is that it would be almost impossible to get Georgie into the country. They have very strict rabies rules, and she'd have to be quarantined for longer that we think would be fair to her.

    Very Nice! In Furnas you can eat a traditional food from Sao Miguel called the 'Cozido das Furnas', which is a kind of stew with beef, chicken, many pork parts, meat....cooked inside large holes near the hot springs, usualy you have to book with the restaurant the day before, and it includes the visit to the place where its cooked in furnas holes.

    We came upon one of those abandoned resort hotels with an amazing view on a recent visit to Shinkoku Island in Japan. Something kinda creepy yet compelling about exploring modern ruins. How quickly everything is consumed by nature. You can really sense the ghosts and despair of someones investment dream gone bust.

      @@bird718 We'll, the Aquaquest isn't perfect, but it has a lot going for it. We bought it in 2013 and it's been used and abused since. I'm sure it lost it's waterproof rating after the first 3-4 years, but it's still going strong. The biggest difference to the more durable Mantus we also have is the foam back support of the Aquaquest.... It keeps all those boxes and provision we carry from digging into my back, plus, it provides ventilation where the other bags we have just sit against your back causing bad sweating.

    Question: you have earbuds in on the bus; are you listening to music or a guide speaking english or what?

    • @mattjohnson6716
      @mattjohnson6716 5 років тому +1

      The bus was a guided/automated tour. The information was OK, but a lot of music and not a ton of real "information". Most people on the the bus abandoned listening to it after a few minutes.

    good vid ,but how come the hotel on the top went defunked seems strange did they over price like most company's now ,can you show a little bit more of the locations ,rather than you , sorry if this is offence but nothing meant , or do we have to pay Patrons ££££ to see more of the locations Mmmm '

      Location. From the locals we spoke to, it seems that bad road access and no other conveniences is what did this hotel in. Now that there is good roads, it looks like it will be coming back soon.
      As to the videos, Jess always struggles with what to show in these videos.... and that is why they are about double the length of most. You may like more on the location, but the next guy wants just sailing... the next just working on the boat... the next fishing...etc.
      Looking at the popular sailing channels will show you what the majority wants to see. Few of these channels focus much on the location... instead, they mostly document their day living on the boat. Cooking, maintenance, and maybe a swim before a sundowner seems popular.

    Unlikely I will ever get to visit any of the exotic locations you share, I do thank you both for allowing me to enjoy seeing the world, and it's many cultures. The sailing part makes the adventure even more interesting and adds to my interest. Thanks again, you guys are amazing!

      Thanks! Jess spent years working on the written blogs for MJSailing, and while she did a great job describing the scenes, nothing beats being able to show you with the videos.
