You’ve inspired me to learn about elevators unfortunately I’m very claustrophobic so I’m scared of places that are tight,have no windows etc but I like glass elevators my mall used to have a Chewbacca elevator.
Here's what I think happened, there must have been an issue with the elevator so they decided to turn it off by going into the machine room, in the machine room there is typically 2 power supply switches, one for the elevator to run and for the pump, the other one is for the lights and the fan, they must have only turned the power off to the pump and so it can't run, they apparently left the light and the fan on.
