As an artist, I'm in full agreement with your last point. Learn and master the basics. Using the easy button doesn't make you better, it just makes you lazy and kiss all respect goodbye.
Boy you hit the nail on the head. I am guilty of the first 2 points you talked about. The 3rd one about electronics I don't have a problem. I don't even turn them on most of the time. Great video as usual.
Swinging crazy hard on a hook set is something I've never understood? I think you would rip their mouth or pull it out of their mouth. I'm still stewing over a big girl I lost yesterday. It stings! I felt the bite, reeled down into feeling pressure, then pulled back. It was almost a perfect hook set but the fish pulled off halfway back to the kayak. I got a good look at her. My guess is 7-8 lbs. It's biggest bite I've gotten so far this year & I fucked it up! Ouch!!! She must of been skin hooked or something? Just gotta keep fishing...
Some good info I’ve been trying to break my habit of finishing to fast really appreciate what ya do Randy and I’m with ya on the ffs my buddy’s got one I sure didn’t find it interesting which I guess I’m just old school I like the thrill of not knowing when the fish is going to strike
The first two are spot on,five decades ago my mentor would catch fish all day, I missed bites all day,he finally asked me if I ever watched a cat, sounds strange, but so similar, they stalk, watch, very curious, we'll bass are like that on bottom baits, they look, see a wiggle then pick it up,if you give it a few seconds they turn their head, pull and set it,like you said, take a breath, it makes a world of difference, new hooks are crazy sharp.
Thanks for the video Randy! Can you maybe do a video or point me in the direction of a video that explains how to find the right bait for the day? Like what you start with when you get to the lake and how you determine what they want? I am a kayak/smallmouth guy and I fish a lot of small rivers/creeks. Do you have any tips on breaking down those types of waters in google earth to find good tournament stretches to fish? Thanks in advance!
I managed to catch a rock bass 😂😂😂 in 2’ of water at Table Rock lake a few weeks ago without the use of FFS on a wiggle wart. It was a little hard to get it off the bottom until I got it loose with my 12 pound fluorocarbon line. 🤷♂️🤷♂️😜😜😜😜😜😜🤣🤣🤣🤣
I've only recently spread my wings and tried new equipment and methods. I think the reason we don't is because there is a learning curve and a period of catching less during it.
I mostly just kayak fish now, but even if my cast does not land where I want, I fish it like it landed right where I wanted it, I have caught a lot of fish like that, patience is the key
Kayak fishing presents its own set of challenges. I have no pedal drive and no electronics. Standing is not an option. So, pitching and skipping are nearly impossible for me. Then there is the wind, which makes holding positions around a certain cover or target a serious challenge by itself. If anyone wants primal fishing, this is the way to go.
I'm an old school crankbait angler, my go to lure in all conditions. I've always just slowly pulled back and reeled. I can't tell you how many were skin hooked and I landed them. I have watched 2 buddies who use gorilla hooksets only to bust off numerous times. I might give it a little extra pull in the river during the early part of retrieve to get the hooks set better. I definitely fish slower even with a moving bait since I got older. As far as FFS came out I was never tempted to buy one. The only advantage a fish has is being hidden, take that away and 90% of the battle is in your favor. Why not just drain the lake and net them, or cut down all the trees and pick out which deer to shoot. This is just another example of people always wanting to take shortcuts to success. It's pretty sad what this sport is turning into.
I fish slow and pick it apart with many different angles if I’m pitching , I have so ease up on the hook set , watching the PROS Live Scoping completely sucks , I will not watch it , it’s the most boring technique
My biggest problem is I can get fish to bite but lately they shake me off. I'll use diff rods, lures and baits and still I'll miss a few. Maybe a flashy swimmer 3/0 hook is too small for a 3.8 swimbait? I have 2 medium heavy spinning rods and still can't get the hook set half the time. I'm also in a kayak. Im about to try use swimbait heads instead with exposed hook.. Also been missing bass on a bleeding bitsy bug jig with rage menace trailer. They tear it up then usually jump and shake and they are gone. Lost a really nice bass today that way. Idk if I'm setting the hook too hard or not enough. Got me 2nd guessing myself now... 😂 Fishing...
And I went back out today and never set the hook. I just reeled the swim jig in when I felt a bite and I went 4 for 4! Guess I was setting the hook too hard! Thanks for the tip Randy! 💙
I hate hard sets that break their jaw. I caught one with a terribly shattered jaw. I wished her luck and leased her. I went on to catch that bass 7 times. Eventually she'd healed up.
I started tying bass bugs on circle hooks and found that by just picking up the slack they would be caught in the corner of the mouth. No expert just trying something different.
I don’t agree with you on a lot of things but the hookset I do. I don’t like a slack line hookset. I wholeheartedly disagree with Gerald swindle. I have proven to myself over and over that a quick snap hard hookset is how you actually lose way more fish.
Oh yes , the bass fishing on tv this past weekend, I watched 3 minutes of it . Fishing no structure that you could see , it was open water fishing and I switched channels because it sucked ! Ffs on tv is not even worth watching !
I love how you say “when they pull the plug on ffs guys aren’t gonna know what to do anymore” but you think bass are evolving. So I guess bass are now evolving quicker than spotlighters

Totally agree
Agreed
he forgot " limit the amount of beer you drink"
Umbilical cord attached to FFS lmao ! Subscribed for life !
I'm smooth and firm , because I'm old 🙂 on the hook set !

Thanks Randy, you made some great points. I can definitely use work on the first two
At 67 years old, I'm finally slowing down, easing up with my hook sets, and FFS is not fishing!!! I'm doing better on the water than I ever have!
I don't fish tournaments anymore cause I am tired of the young guys bragging about all the electronics and nice boat and truck Mom and dad paid for
I’m 66 and I agree 👍

Great tips thank you sir. Explain the froggin hookset to people good luck. Only experience like all will help. Take care randy
Really good video Randy. Very informative.
Thank you, I do tend to get too fast

My worst habit is not trying new baits and techniques. I’m too set in my ways right down to the equipment I use. Need to spread my wings more.

Depth of water makes a difference on T-rig hook sets

Good video, I agree 100 percent.
Ffs is the tits

Guilty, guilty, guilty Have been following me around and I live in CA. but great practical advise.
I can’t set the hook easy ! 👍😂

Had me till FFS.
You can’t teach the last one on the young up come kids !

Average anti ffs chump comment. Are you even hating on ffs or offshore fishing in general lol
And ?? They aren't there to entertain you. They are there to catch fish and win a tournament.
I thought this was Mistakes for Ass Banglers. Im in the wrong video
I've been fishing for about all my life and have never used electronics at all and never will.
I love how you say “when they pull the plug on ffs guys aren’t gonna know what to do anymore” but you think bass are evolving. So I guess bass are now evolving quicker than spotlighters
Cheater box? Forward facing sonar crap?
Anything that helps you catch MORE fish is NOT a bad habit
This dude cant get through a vid without bashing FFS
Truth hurts feelings
That’s because it’s cheating
Rightfully so
BAN FFS
If you are using FFS, you ain't fishing!
1 out of 3 for me. I fish to fast. Patience grasshopper
