I have used Texas rigged since I was 12 and I’m 40 now. I like worm hooks a ton and EWG. I don’t feel like like one is better than the other. My best advice to newer Texas rig guys is throw it often and try to keep your weight as light as possible. I rarely ever go about 1/4 ounce bow except for deep weeds in the summer I’ll use 3/8-1/2 ounce.
All good information. Just remember not to discount old school methods. Fishing in the 70s we had short pistol grip rods, round ambassadors and stren mono, but still caught well. I love the new tech, but hard to beat a Manns purple jelly worm back in the day.
I love , love finesse fishing fir bass, needless to say, but I super enjoy texas rig bass fishing. For your average size worms, I go with offset shank worm hook because I like the smaller profile and the way it is in line with the worm. EWG for craws. My go-to worms are ribbon tail worms. I love that it gives extra action to whatever I'm doing. Texas rig weightless in the spring for me. Love all the ideas and tips on here and comment section. God bless everyone!
Welcome to Fl! For me late 80s and 90s always went with Tru Turn 2/0 hooks and continued to be my choice in 2023. 1/8oz I agree…recently caught several in area with current and NO weight except for hook and soft plastic. I think as light as possible for any area is best.
Rod and reel selection , a zebco 33 and a bass pro shop medium/heavy pistol grip and 10# line . Caught me a 9 and 1/2 pounder on a Texas rig with an 1/16 oz. Bullet weight .
Texas rigged caffeine shad no peg 3/16 oz to 1/4 oz is an absolute killer the slip weight controls the dart of the fluke/trick worm action of the caffeine shad! The dart draws them to it and they’ll either hit on the fall of the dart or after it sits on the bottom for 3-4 seconds! Great video! New sub!
I'm confused as to how I could ever catch bass 30-40 years ago when a casting reel retrieved that lure at some unknown speed? I didn't have a clue what "gear ratio" was and still bass actually bit my lures on occasion.
I do good with my Zebco 33 with a Texas rig. Just let it drop, reel in about a foot, let it sit about 5-10 seconds, repeat. 🤷🏻♂️ works for me as my go to play.
Fished for 30 years with the ole walmart specials, best rod was an ugly stix and ripped lips. Could have been winning pro tournaments and never even had a clue
I had the privilege of fishing the lower Potomac for a few years in the 90s. I usually fished from the bank and had a couple of fantastic locations. One was in a cove on the Maryland side just before the Wilson bridge. I had another spot that was even more amazing but it was a hike to get to. It was a little south of the Woodrow Wilson and up a little tributary. It was incredible in the heat of the summer. I’ve also fished the upper Potomac around Brunswick and Sandy Hook. Also not as far north, around Dickerson and the Monocacy Aquaduct. They produced a lot of bass too, but they were generally about half the size. It’s been over 25 years since I’ve fished the Potomac but if I get the opportunity I would love to fish it again.
I don’t know what it looks like around the bridge since they replaced it but I’m sure there’s hundreds of good locations within just a mile or so on either the upper side or the lower side of the bridge.
Never peg with a toothpick. I use a piece of rubber band tied in a not at the top of the weight. No line damage. I agree with your hook selection. Trusted True Turn for years.
First time I have even heard the term PEG. As for the weight, I keep those old style toothpicks in my tackle box just for keeping the weight from moving. Never had any line issue with a toothpick.
Florida fishing rocks! Only problem here is soupy algae in our ponds. I love the texas rig but fishing the bottom can accumulate lots of green. And im not talking about cash!
This is great advice thanks im new to fishing i only use swimbaits got obsessed with bluegills and everyone was laughing like my family was like "those little fish again" but now i get it its because bluegill are very boring to some people so i switched swimbaits this summer and i caugh a nice little pike, small mouth crappie , and catfish on a worm because they dont go for soft plastics but i will try this next time i go bass fishing at my local pond
Use a Gamakatsu skip gap hook instead of a regular wide gap for worms and especially flukes and you'll never go back! Best hook I have ever used hands down!
I've only targeted bass for about a decade (it was all bluegill and catfish until I caught my PB 4' channel cat), and almost all of my success has been with soft plastic swim baits and spinners. I haven't had the patience to really finesse fish, but last year, I dedicated so much time to throwing a Texas rig, and I got squat lol I've caught huge steelhead trout with a 2" curly tailed grub on a Ned Rig, so I'm gonna try smaller worms this year - something in the middle, like a 4" curly tail - and definitely gonna go Ned Rig unless throwing right into the pads.
I throw my Texas rigged senkos almost exclusively weightless and catch plenty of fish. But I would switch up finesse presentations because it could be that your water is heavily pressured by people throwing stick baits.
All I use are 1-0 offset shank worm hooks like the first one you showed, my nephew only uses the ewg, wide whatever you call them in a 2 or 3-0 size. I always catch more fish when we fish together. I always figured those clumsy wide hooks were too obvious visually. Its not that i miss hookups, they just dont go after his for some reason. Both Fishing zoom trick worms no weights. Wondering if anyone has thoughts on visibility since the majority seem to prefer them bigger wide hooks, I fish more from years of doing, he being younger tends to go by books and videos etc, but always asks for a hook after hes just not catching like me. We both fiah same technique, toos, let sink, tug and reel, wait a few seconds, repeat, roland martin style. Fish in our lake range from 1.5 to 8 pounds, majority are 2 to 3 lbs.
I'm not a huge fan of the straight shank hooks myself (round bend or otherwise) but many excellent anglers have great success with them. Brian Latimer comes to mind. He seems to use them exclusively. I prefer EWG hooks for Texas rigging. Weight size for me is usually determined more by water type than by cover. If it's a fast current river I'm fishing, I can't use light weights because the current won't allow the worm to sink. On a pond or slow moving river, I'll use a lighter weight, just because I don't need the heavy weight any more, and you get a slower action that the fish seem to prefer more.
I’m 68 and started bass fishing when I was 15 and have caught hundreds of bass on a straight shank offset hooks, usually #3-#4 hooks, though I have several other top named brands wide gap hooks and had success on them too, though never afraid to tie a straight shank for any soft bait, especially for my worms and craws, unless it’s required to use another style due to the baits size. There are so many things these younger fisherman have learned from and the same thing we heard them from in the early ‘70’s and that’s pure advertisement! If you are a pretty good fisherman, I think more of it is skill, not so much brands and styles!
Nice video, Nathan! I 'm a bit shy with worm hooks as well. I don't seem to miss many fish with the EWG, even in considerable grass areas, so why fix what's not broken? When I fish a 4" thin worm like a power worm, sometimes I'll go with a #1 or 1/0 worm hook, but the worm's not straight after you skin hook it cause it doesn't lay parallel to the worm as does an EWG, and I'm often light lining & weighting such small baits, so I'd prefer skin hooking to burying the hook point, requiring greater force on 8/10# line to get an adequate hookset,. When I saw your straight tail (finesse) worm rigged with the EWG, kind of told me you're not a big fan....
I've never used those hooks. I like to buy a pack I can throw a robot worm or a fat creature bait. Ewg or Flippin hooks work best for me. And that depends on cover snfmd how the fish are biting g.
Just use a tooth pick to peg your weight. I've been fishing Fla/s Ga 55yrs. Don't be afraid to use a 3/8-1/2oz weight pegged with a big worm in hydrilla.
PRO TIP; Put a bead between your drop weight and hook, this will keep the weight from cutting your knot and losing your hook/bait. This will also lower the drag the weight gives when reeling in fast.
I fish Lake George NY a few times a year in a kayak. I’ve caught my biggest bass there but not a lot of catches. I like going into the north west bay thought the swamp looks like bass heaven but never had much luck nor in the bay itself. Do you have any tips or locations you have fished. I was told to head up to mossy point and will try it this week. I like your videos very informative. John
Awesome information! I typically use wacky rig, but would like to try Texas rigs. LOVE the weight breakdown! Look forward to your Florida vid! Roger, The Smiling BassHole
I haven't tried much of either, but last year, I really tried to throw a Texas rig every time I fished and got squat, lol I'm gonna throw Ned Rigs and Whacky this year.
New sub! All good info. I follow same thinking when it comes to peg or not to peg. Love me some Texas rig. Simple zoom worm and 1/16 oz weight catches 5+ pounders for me. Enjoy Florida. I'm itching to head down there soon.
Id rather go weightless but my area has a lot of heavy cover and is decently shallow, but i wanna use a bigger weight that will drive through that cover. Its confusing.
Would you consider a screw lock EHG hook over the other hooks you talked about. I have just started to use them; and so far, they hold the bait better than the others. Just wondering.
Great advice but I don't agree with everything. I run a 8.2.1 slxdc , on 25lb braid . And if I'm running a weighted texas rig it's always pegged never an issue . And on my 6.2.1 abu reel I run a weightless texas rig and I can catch em on both lol but that's me I mainly fish the texas rig all year so maybe I'm used to it. Great vid
Can't blame you bud, it's a bear out there! I'll be driving through Pittsburgh Tuesday on my way to Cleveland. Hoping you don't get too much snow, I need clear roads. I'll look forward to watching your videos from Florida even though I love me some jerk bait and Ned videos!
I wouldn’t say I’m a pro Angler at all but I know what I’m doing that’s for sure but the craziest thing is I got 40 pound striper PB’s on crank baits and swim baits but I CANNOT catch a fish on a Texas rig idk if it’s cause I’m way up north and it’s just not the thing or if I struggle with setting the hook but I get bites all day just can never land that fish without a heavy strike
Thanks Nathan. I have stayed away from EWG hooks for worms because it just seems I get more bites with worm hooks. I think it's a visual thing or just in my head. My creatures get the Gamma hybrid worm hook which does have a wide gap and is a amazing strong hook that goes clean thru on hook sets. Try it once you'll be hooked (pun intended).
I've never used an EWG hook on a worn .... BECAUSE the round bends actually have a WIDER gap than an most ewg...The WORM hook point is ABOVE the hook eye.. the EWG hook is inline with the hook eye. but hey that's just what I see...
Do you think that you loose feel or action from floro to copolymer. Do you get less bites?. I switched from floro to gamma copolymer last year and feel I did better at years end, with less cost, and better results. I'm asking for legit reasoning. I use mostly 12lb ...on my worm set up which I fish all year in Pa mostly Erie. Thanks for your video and Input.
I am not Nathan but my 2 cents are, co-poly will give you a slower fall rate and a little better action on your worm. Co-poly is thicker but more limber than floro. Co-poloy is way cheaper. Floro sinks, is more sensitive, thinner, less stretch (better hook sets), less visible. That's why pros use it. Co-poly is better than mono in my opinion .
@@kevinbeaudean704 agree- Kevin and thanks for your input. I've been happy with copolymer since I switched some set ups from floro. Always a good topic.
I'm completely new to this stuff, when i want to change soft platics do you prefer to keep the same hook and change a sinko to a craw or do you prefer to keep the same hook for each soft plastic and change everything out?
I prefer if I’m bottom hoppin 8 gear ratio..because only real when I’m doing slack or getting fish out cover..7.6ft around cover …7ft on rocks and rocks..I like a stiffer tip Med heavy to heavy..gimme G hooks gamas but not knocking 6th sense I like there straight shanks on creature baits
Where and when will you be in Florida? Hopefully after this Christmas cold front as the bass will shutdown this weekend but should be active next week and especially for the full moon the first part of January. Ping me if you will be in Central or South Florida and maybe we can meet up or I can recommend some guides to help you locate the big bass 😊
I never use an EWG hook. The eye is in line with the barb and causes missed fish. I only use a straight worm hook for that reason. I use anything from a 1/8 oz to a 1/2 oz weight depending on the circumstance.
@@bobbyhempel1513 lol. I don't have a problem missing fish either but I use a straight shank hook and hook them in the top of the mouth where they have less chance to throw the hook. I have seen other people use ewg though and miss fish and there are plenty of videos where other people have missed or lost fish due to an ewg hook
Does anyone ever still use the lead bullet weights? I’ve always used a 3/16 and still catch many. Tungsten is so expensive and it’s not like I can’t afford them, but is everyone satisfied that it’s better than lead? The only reason I’d think to change would be a faster sink rate in deeper water.
I use straight mono on everything. Sorry Charlie but the milk’s still good. You can not get any bait to stay on flourish or braid without superglue and I’m not using the. Plus neither are as biodegradable as mono is and it doesn’t rot as fast as mono when you break off and kills less fish and other wildlife when you break off.
How about zman pro crawz since the pinchers float what size weight do you think is better for the Texas rig. I use a 1/4oz it's working for me right now, just want to learn more
Been fishing Texas rig before it was called Texas rig about 50 years I never fish with bigger than 3/0 don't care for wide gap how's and I've caught shit loads
The only difference between my Texas Rig & your set up is that I use a glass bead! Obviously you wouldn't punching but just fishing structure the old set up by Don Iovino from the 1980's still works today! The Old Doodling rig.
@OveRated Texas rig with a Tru turn hook , 1/16 oz. bullet weight and 10# line on a zebco 33 . Got my pb of 9 and 1/2 pounds on that rig . No weight stop . Works good in Florida .
Obviously a lot of opinions out there. Fish a million hours and have an open mind is my approach. There’s so many variables. I fish with guys using the same lure as me and smoke them and vice versa.
It was an interesting video. However, you mentioned nothing in regards to picking colors of plastics and how to rig it on a hook (your methods). I fish North Georgia and I mostly fish ponds and lakes.
I don't get it! Go up or down in line weight. Obviously you guys do not reline your reels every time you decide to go 'up' or 'down'. So that must mean you have a few rods already spooled with different weight lines. How do you keep track of these? And how can you afford it?
Texas rig is my go to for tough day’s, never lets me down.

There were some kuykendall’s in my school. Probably relatives.
Gret video!!! Safe travels & catch some BIG Ones!!! Question: On the straight shank hook what knot do you use? Stay Safe & God Bless!!!
Snell
Just a Palomar usually
I'm completely new to this stuff, when i want to change soft platics do you prefer to keep the same hook and change a sinko to a craw or do you prefer to keep the same hook for each soft plastic and change everything out?
It really depends on the size of the bait!
I used a texes rig since I was nine
I prefer if I’m bottom hoppin 8 gear ratio..because only real when I’m doing slack or getting fish out cover..7.6ft around cover …7ft on rocks and rocks..I like a stiffer tip Med heavy to heavy..gimme G hooks gamas but not knocking 6th sense I like there straight shanks on creature baits
All of that would work as well! Didn’t want to over complicate it for the beginner fisherman!
Love the Clout 5.4 Texas rigged on a light 1/32oz tungsten. Gave me a 6 pounder the first time I tried it.
Awesome!
If you can fish a Texas Rig weightless and cast the bait where you want it, is that the preferred method given the theory of less weight is better?
Correct! Usually
I’m here currently
@@nathanquincefishing7122 where are you fishing? Headwaters?
Never paid attention to gear ratio except spinnerbaits and crank baits. Faster ratios for those.
Will see you you some drinks while you were down in Florida
I thought you were going to show how to do the line with the worm but i guess i misunderstood.
How to do the line with the worm? I could fit another video if I missed something
Thanks again for another great video.
Thank you!
Thanks!
I never use an EWG hook. The eye is in line with the barb and causes missed fish. I only use a straight worm hook for that reason. I use anything from a 1/8 oz to a 1/2 oz weight depending on the circumstance.
I don't have any problems missing fish with ewg hooks; sounds like an excuse to me.
Only hook I use is a tru-turn 4/0 brute ,!!
Great video
Jow you use a peg? And how you set that up?
You just slide it onto your line before rigging!
I usually use tungsten
@@nathanquincefishing7122 Thanks!
New subscriber. What knot do you use?
Palomar knot!
Request……you said ask you right?? Could you send some nice warm weather to Central Washington? Lol
Wish I could!
i love fishing
I like turtles!
Superglue?! Lmao Just tie an improved cinch knot. I only throw fluorocarbon.
Apparent you need to learn how to tie hooks onto line lmao
I have been fishing 35 years. I forgot how to tie more knots than you have ever learned.
And I have tie that knot with floro and it comes untied also.
@@davidcrump2348 doubt it
Nice video. 6th Sense hooks suck. VMC and Gamakatsu hooks are so much sharper and better.
I haven’t had any problems with them Gamakatsu is good as well!
Owner makes the best worm hook I’ve ever used. 72 and still catching them.
How about zman pro crawz since the pinchers float what size weight do you think is better for the Texas rig. I use a 1/4oz it's working for me right now, just want to learn more
That’s a good size for all around fishing!
I see some people put a beer on there line where to find a beed?
Netcraft
Been fishing Texas rig before it was called Texas rig about 50 years I never fish with bigger than 3/0 don't care for wide gap how's and I've caught shit loads
The only difference between my Texas Rig & your set up is that I use a glass bead! Obviously you wouldn't punching but just fishing structure the old set up by Don Iovino from the 1980's still works today! The Old Doodling rig.
That’s true! I usually skip it
I only use a 1/16 oz. weight .
@OveRated long worms weigh more . I go weight free with long worms . Get a slow fall , keep it in the "zone" longer and fish shallow .
@OveRated Texas rig with a Tru turn hook , 1/16 oz. bullet weight and 10# line on a zebco 33 . Got my pb of 9 and 1/2 pounds on that rig . No weight stop . Works good in Florida .
@OveRated I go with 10# trilene .
@OveRated Tampa area , with the light weight , I can keep the 6" bait on top of the lilly pads and work it slow .
Texas rig as a search bait? That's rough.
I still use Tru-Turn hooks
Nice!
Yes love the true turn hood
Great video ++
Thanks!
And if you are fishing cover don’t punch your hook all the way through the worm.
Obviously a lot of opinions out there. Fish a million hours and have an open mind is my approach. There’s so many variables. I fish with guys using the same lure as me and smoke them and vice versa.
I agree with that!
It was an interesting video. However, you mentioned nothing in regards to picking colors of plastics and how to rig it on a hook (your methods).
I fish North Georgia and I mostly fish ponds and lakes.
I can do another video on selection colors
I don't get it! Go up or down in line weight. Obviously you guys do not reline your reels every time you decide to go 'up' or 'down'. So that must mean you have a few rods already spooled with different weight lines. How do you keep track of these? And how can you afford it?
Yes I do have different reels with different line but I’ve acquired them over time and years of fishing
Small weights. Clear water.
Interesting
Thanks for posting, but my man, look at the camera
Make a BETTER PRESENTATION use a weighted swimbait hook (VMC Drop Dead Hook)
