Whenever I get comfortable, I very soon after get nervous. I think a big new property is a perfect challenge for you (to make you uncomfortable again) and a great new story to tell.

It’s not boastful to say you are debt free - it’s the truth and the result of good choices, hard work, and sacrifice. You should be proud. It’s also cool to grow and change as a family. Priorities change and that’s okay. I definitely identify with that. One of the reasons I love this channel (other than the amazing woodworking) is how open, honest, and real you are. You are an admirable person, Jay, and you deserve the best. I wish you good luck and happiness. Thanks for including us on your journey. 👍🏼

Jay Bates I’ve been watching you for years and I’m so glad to see you say you are debt free. Thinking of you running videos out of the spare apartment at the complex where you were doing maintenance... Look what you’ve accomplished! So happy for you, and grateful for your example.

Man, I gotta tell you I watch your videos every time you release them. It is abundantly clear to me that you are just about the most real dude on this platform. You are incredibly introspective and I love how raw you are with what you share. My wife and I also dream of living on land and homesteading, growing our own food and giving our kids a hands on individualized education. I’m sure you get it a lot, but you seem to be the type of guy I would be happy to have for dinner or to sit down to enjoy a beer with. If you are ever in Denver I’d be happy to make good on that! I’ll be praying that God continues to guide you and your wife as you figure out this next step!

Jay, your path is definitely not goofy. It sounds like an amazing new adventure. I’m 63 and worked the corporate high stress job in the big city that provided well for my family. However, I like you, always had the dream which I never pursued. At this end of life, that was my biggest regret. In this crazy world, family, and the adventures you create with them is one of the most important parts of life! You are not only creating great times for your kids now but the rural life will create grown ups with great moral and responsible characters. Go open that amazing next chapter!

An idea that my wife and I are working on/designing is building the phase 1 workshop/garage-mahal/temp residence and the phase 2 home about 40 feet apart so that we can build a phase 3 multipurpose greenhouse/4 season patio/dining room between the two. Sun, rain or snow we'd never have to step outside to go to either my workshop or her craft-shop and we can have dinner or after-dinner drinks under the stars any time we like. Also, hopefully our greenhouse will have an exit directly into the garden that's partially protected between the two buildings. All it really takes is a little bit of prior planning and burying some 2x12's in the walls of both buildings before the metal goes on so that you have a place for the greenhouse roof to die into when phase 3 starts.

Jay, first I'd like to congratulate you for being so humble, I am so happy for you and your success. I don't know if you're a spiritual person, but I as watched your video, I prayed to God to keep you in the path of your dream. You are an awesome woodworker, I've been following you for years, and you deserve everything you have accomplished and more. Your demeanor and style of teaching how to make something, makes people want to try new things. I wish you the best for you and your family, and can't wait to see the chicken coop you build for your daughter! My daughter got chickens when she was 10, she's 14 now, and we just added 4 more chicks this past weekend; they make the best pets! I have learned so much from UA-cam woodworking videos and I appreciate the time you put in to create these videos. I look forward to continue watching your 'Adventure' develop into reality.

    Hi Jay.
I rarely write in UA-cam comments, but today I decided to write. And I apologize to everyone for the long text.
I've been following your channel since forever, I followed you building 2 workshops, I followed you perfecting your techniques, with woodworking, video editing and content building. I followed your daughter's arrival and everything else.
I've been a woodworking hobbyist since I was a teenager, and I really wanted to thank you so much for the knowledge I acquired watching your videos. Here in Brazil, it is not so easy to get quality tools, unless you invest a lot of money.
I recently moved to a larger piece of land to build my workshop. Honestly, I can't give any advice about your decision, but I am sure that the path,(if not more) is as important as the destination, and a person like you will certainly make the path for you and your family very happy.
I'm looking forward to see the new contents of your new journey. Good luck and Greetings from Brazil

I think it’s wonderful!! My wife and I teach Dave Ramsey’s FPU, Financial Peace University, and know exactly what you’ve talked about and have lived like this for years now. 95% of the world live week to week and can’t even afford a new tire for their car if it blew out tomorrow, sad but true. It’s awesome to know you can do whatever you want in life because of living debt free and would say keep doing what you’re doing because you’re doing it the right way. All I’d advise you guys to do is make sure you’re maxing out your investments and make sure you have at least 6 months of expenses set aside, cash, in case something happens. You probably already know this but just in case. I could keep talking about this all night but you’d probably get boring of hearing it😂😂 Anyway, debt free living is complete freedom. Keep up the great job and do exactly what you want! Coming from your home state, Michigan! We’re in Portage and if you’re ever around again let’s have dinner, it’s on me!👍

1.5 years ago, we retired and moved from LA, a long way from family, back to the mitten. That meant we had to pack up my shop. It is now stored in the corner of the barn. The good news is that our daughter decided to move here also. They purchased a home about 5 miles away. It has a shop building on the property. It was a mouse infested mess. It has been, completely stripped to the, post frame, studs ie posts and girts, and is in the process of getting remodeled since taking possession. It has been a long process, and in a short(ish) time I'll have a really nice place, heated/insulated, to work year round. You'll survive the "minimal" tool selection - not without longing to hear that big saw sing, though - but you'll make it. Get ready for a wild crazy ride!
PS: as stated in a previous post, Kyle at RRbuilding puts out an amazing amount of content for post frame structures. Hey, he built a building for Duresta, maybe he'd collaborate with you, maybe?

Just a suggestion. Buy 1 or 2 shipping containers to store your shop items on your new property. While not a long term solution it has many advantages. More so having 2 that you can then turn into a simple container shop to get started with once your "new" shop is constructed. Also great video and look forward to seeing this journey. Even if its not "creating content" I would say at this point most of us are here for you, the builds are just a cherry on top! GOOD LUCK!

    Go for it brother!
Growing up we lived on 20 aches and raised animals, smaller farm type thing. We raised and had - 23 pygmy goats, 11 llamas, a jack and a jenny, over 100 birds of all types. Birds Included, Guinnea hens, Black australorps, Mallards, Cochin bantam, Aylesbury, Rhode Island reds, Silkies, Peacocks, and so on. We built these huge Aviarys for the birds, it was pretty awesome watching and helping my dad, I was pretty sure he could build anything. Lol. We also had 8 horses, and 36 dogs. (I believe 36 was the most dogs and pups we had at any givin point in time.) Dogs Included, Great pyrenees, Silky terriers, Bishon frisé, and even a couple Havanese.

Grew up on 10 acres in the country, bored as heck as a kid, moved to the city and loved it and said i'd never leave that. Once I had my family and hit about 35 years old I've only tried to get away from human beings as far as I can lol and get back to how it was growing up on that 10 acres.. Moved to East Idaho and love it. Laid back and was cheap when we moved here but not now. Glad we got in when we did. Best of luck on your journeys man.

Chase that new adventure! Your home is where your family is. Make the most memories that you can. My family and I also enjoy camping, those are some of the best times. Can't wait to see what new content this allows you to create.
