I am brand new to sewing with a machine and have been frustrated with so many tutorials that seem to be for people who already know what they're doing. This broke everything down PERFECTLY! Thank you so much for your clarity!
This video is great! My wife has a brother's sewing machine that has sat in a closet the entire time we have owned it. I bought some pants I really like but that were too long on me. I decided I'd try hemming them and this video was a great resource. Very easy to follow along with. Really appreciate the video as I could finally use the sewing machine and make the pants fit perfectly!
Hey Domenica: Just wanted to say a huge "Thank You!" for this video. I just successfully hemmed my first pair of pants, following your helpful tips and suggestions. And they came out pretty much perfectly. I just bought my first sewing machine YESTERDAY, and aside from a couple of hours figuring out how to thread the bobbins, etc. my biggest challenge was working out how to figure how much fabric to remove from my (overly long) pants, making the marks, cutting a straight line, and folding, ironing, and pinning the hem. I'll confess I had to do a bit of practice on scrap bits of fabric. And more than one of my early attempts ended up pretty horrible. But I tell myself that sewing is a skill, and that practice is required. And that each type of fabric goes through the machine a little differently. I always enjoy learning a new craft or skill. I don't kid myself I'll ever be a master of this craft. But from this day forward, I swear I'll never wear a pair of khakis that drag behind my heels or puddle up around my ankles. Thanks again, Domenica. You made my day!
I’ve been sewing pants alterations for awhile mostly using UA-cam videos as guides. This video is hands down the best beginner video on UA-cam. Well done!
Thank you thank you thank you! After my grandad died 2 years ago he left me a brand new sewing machine because he knew how much I wanted to learn a practical skill. It’s taken me a while but I’ve finally hauled it out of the box and successfully hemmed 2 pairs of work pants thanks to your help! The best instructions I’ve found by far and I’m now feeling way more confident to start new projects (even if my sewing is still a bit wonky lol)
I know this video is old. But I thank you so much. I just purchased my first sewing machine. This really helped me. Wish me luck on gemming my granddaughters pants.
Just did my first hem looks great And did a backward stitch very cool. I haven't used a sewing machine since the 60's with my Grandma Thank you so much and men can't sew. Now I can thanks to you . DJ
Thank you so much for sharing this video, and sharing your skills and teaching ways: I have successfully hemmed my blue baggy trousers that I have been wearing with an over trail for some time now, and they feel and look so good! 1st attempt as well. Your instructions are very clear, and your camera shots are also very clear and accurate and relative to the instructions. I want to let you know how helpful this video is for me. Thank you!
Thank you very much for the tutorial, I have never hemmed anything in my life so your video taught me all I needed to follow your step by step instructions. I really like that you zoomed in to show needle placement. I've always been nervous about cutting off the extra fabric but I went ahead and did it like you showed in the video and I didn't mess up my pants, so that's great, thanks! Small victories!
I liked your video, you covered a lot of good points, like prewashing garment and wearing shoes to measure hem. I would suggest using a very small zigzag for knit fabric because the straight stitch might break when fabric is stretched. Thank you for your video.
Thank you so much I been sewing for years but always had trouble with hemming now I feel much comfortable after seeming your instructions thanks so much.
This was SUPER helpful! Thank you so much. My mother in law gave me the basics the other day when showing me how to use the machine, but this video broke all the steps down so wonderfully. What a great resource.
I was delighted to watch and listen to the video as it was in English, not American English. The video is very clear and consice, so I going to give it a go
thank you so much for the easy to follow and fail-proof tutorial. I had 3 hours to hem my pants for an event, and it turned out well. Thank you so much
I'm a guy......and I ruin my clothes all the time. I'm tired of buying new clothes and then ruining them AGAIN. This video is so helpful, I had no idea how to approach this and this video is slow, clear and concise. Thank you!
Thank you so much for this video. I am a beginner and of course my sewing class was canceled due to Covid and my Dad needs his pants hemmed and I have been terrified to try it. I've succesfully made masks and your video is so clear and you have given me the confidence to go for it today.
By far the best and complete video I have found! Now I just need to figure out how to take out my stitch job. I did it backwards lol. Looks like spiderwebs on the other side of the stitch. Not sure what I did. Lol thank you for this video
I know this is around 3 years old, and I'm probably not your typical viewer. But I was having a brain fart when my wife asked me to hem her pants for her first day of work tomorrow. I'm the seamstress (seamster?) in the family (I also weld, build engines, am an avionics tech for a space satellite builder, I'm handy), however, it's been a minute But you pulled me out of a jam tonight with this refresher! Thanks!
To sew over a bulky seam, find something to lift the back of the presser foot so that the presser foot is flat. This way you won’t be sewing uphill as it were. The is a tool that come with every machine that is specifically meant for this purpose. It looks a bit like a boomerang with a slit through. One end is thicker than the other to accommodate different amounts of bulk. 😊
I'll bet I've got one in my machine's little kit. I bet I never bothered to look up what it is for. I prefer to just sit there ranting at the machine for being useless.
I watched a handful of 'how to sew a pant hem' videos last week. I got confused and had to set the project aside. Today I put out the intention to find a clear video that I could follow and using your guidance, I SUCESSFULLY sewed my 1st set of pant hems as a beginner sewer in my 40's! Turned out great! Thank you!
I have a sweing class and my teacher is using her computer camera to show us how to do things, so it's not really showing much. Also she doesn't know how to explain. This kinda helped me
Thank you very much for you very well made tutorial! I have 3 pairs of pants just like these to hem for an elderly friend. I know I will be watching your video a few times over and again every time I have pants to hem. Do you have any tutorials on taking in pants? I have lost a lot of weight and need to alter many pants and shorts. I can't afford to take them to be done but I do have sewing machines and thread along with pins and markers. I make quilts so I am set up with sewing supplies.
Dear Ms. I purchased an inexpensive brother sewing machine. I want to learn to sew. I would like to know how to hem my pants. I am studying your tutorial closely. My machine sews a pillow case just fine. But when I attempt to sew polyester fabric, it will not do it. Is there something special about polyester fabric? If you have time to respond to this question, I would be very appreciative. Thank you for taking the time to make these educational videos. It’s not as easy as I thought it would be.
Thanks for this. Easy to follow, however when i finished stitching as shown, the stitching pattern turned out great on the inside of the pants but on the outside where it can be seen it's bad.. please someone help. What am I doing wrong?
I'm not an expert at all, so hopefully someone else will know exactly how to help you. But it does sound like the same issue I had recently. It was a tension issue. In my case, I was threading the bobbin incorrectly.
This is a great video as far as information and knowledge. It is a bit blurry, which with a dark fabric color and a beginner's eye, made it a little hard to see what things looked like. But overall, great video and I look forward to trying it out!
I've sewn dozens of hems but wanted to check if I was doing it right and I learned things, so thanks! Question: when I sew a hem, I don't reverse at the beginning of stiching. I just go full circle, sew over the beginning of the stich, then reverse to secure. A single reversal instead of 2. Is that a bad/good method?
I'm wondering if I should try a blind hem stitch or this one. Which is easier? I just took my sewing machine out of the box and have never hemmed pants. I've learned how to set up the machine and did some practice stitching on scrap fabric but this will be the first official project.
Most sewing machines do not have that free arm feature as you called it. So I'm guessing that for most of us with a typical sewing machine, we have to fight the pants leg to get it under the presser foot.... or maybe I just need to go and buy a sewing machine with a cylinder arm.
Use a straight stitch and you might like to adjust the width of the stitch. That will depend on personal preference. You can use a double needle. The bottom thread will look more like a zigzag stitch so you would need to make sure that you have your fabric around the correct way when stitching. I have a video for how to use a twin needle here ua-cam.com/video/xErVBi4q-w4/v-deo.html

She wielded that machine like a Jedi.

Thank you! From a 59 yr old man who has just successfully hemmed his first pair of pants and is working on two more!

Awesome to hear 🙌🏻. Glad I could help 😁
Thank you so much for this video! I have successfully hemmed 3 pairs of trousers on my Singer Merritt 161 (hand-me-down from my mum!).
I have to second that last comment. You broke it down big bird Barney style enough for my rusty skills! Thank you!
I love that 😁 thank you for the lovely feedback 👍🏼

OR you can fold a small square of fabric to put under the back of your presser foot😁
@@reesemorgan2259 🤣🤣🤣

Very informative and looks easy. I'm going to try this on a pair of pants I had been planning on sending to a seamstress. I think I can do this!
Very detailed. Thank you!

Have you changed the pressure foot for sewing the border of pant which you sowing now?

What kind of sewing machine do you have
Hi ! I’m trying to figure out what machine settings you used or presser foot, should or can you use a double needle? Thanks in advance !

Great video. But it could have been a lot better if you would have used white material with black thread. But none the less thank you.
Wow... Another great video... What kind of Sewing machine you are using? I subbed ...
What kind of sewing machine do you have?
Why is she using inches? Doesn't Australia use metric?
Thank you so much for sharing this video and sharing your skills. What kind of sewing machine are you using or any sewing machine will do?
