  • One of the best decades for country music was the 1970's. The biggest song to start out that era, was the Song of the Year of 1970, "Sunday Morning Comin' Down" by Johnny Cash.
The song was the follow up to "What Is Truth" and preceded the song "Flesh and Blood" for the man in black.
The big story behind the song is the writing of it. The masterpiece was penned by a young and still fairly unknown Kris Kristofferson.

I heard somewhere that the record company or a station didn't want Cash to sing the part about drugs and wanted the lyrics changed to alcohol, which crushed Kris. While live, Johnny sang it as it was originally write and put a lot of emphasis on "wish I was STONED!" LOL outlaw. Wish I could find that live version.

It's here on UA-cam somewhere. I have heard the story and love it. I believe it's in a country music story. That is what I am trying to find right now.

To me, one of the great things about that song is that if it were simply spoken, especially by Cash, it would be a wonderful poem. But, as a song, it is even better than as a poem. Kris is a great poet as well as a great songwriter. Bravo, and more, more, more ..., Kris.

Cash said he heard the chopper land and walked out to find Kristofferson walking up to him.
"As I approached, out stepped Kris Kristofferson, with a beer in one hand and a tape in the other," Cash said. "I stopped, dumbfounded. He grabbed my hand, put the tape in it, grinned and got back into the helicopter and was gone, a bit wobbly, but almost straight up, then out high above the lake where all his songs lay on the bottom. He disappeared through the clouds. I looked at the tape of "Sunday Morning Coming Down" and "Me And Bobby McGee."
Kristofferson has a different version of the story.
"Y'know, John had a very creative imagination," Kristofferson told UnCut. "I've never flown with a beer in my life. Believe me, you need two hands to fly those things."
Kristofferson also said he doesn't even think Cash was even home that day, adding he was lucky Johnny didn't shoot him on the spot.
Whatever actually happened, the stunt was enough to get Cash's attention. The following Thursday, Cash taped his weekly television program. "Here's a song written by Kris Kristofferson," Johnny told a national television audience. "Don't forget that name."
