He was only in two episodes, with just a few minutes of total screen time, but he is simply one of the *best,* most glorious comedy characters ever created. 120% walking, spunk-filled ego.
That episode was the finest testament to Rik Mayall's skills ever filmed. A cast comprising many of that generation's greatest comic talents...and he blew them all off the screen.
I've just had the pleasure of introducing a young 21 year old friend of mine to Rik Mayall's genius and it's been an amazing experience! Have LOVED being able to show him this clip etc. Long live Rik!!!
1:44 Have you any idea what is like to have the wind rushing through your hair? No sir. Faaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrtttttttttttttttttttttttt!!!!!!! He has! Whoever thought these lines up didn't get paid enough.
"Flash by name, Flash by nature"... The late, *great* Rik Mayall said he'd like a part in Blackadder... just so long as he could out- shine Blackadder! He did it in Spades.
Flashheart is the best character ever in Blackadder. Love how he punches blackadder for insulting him and the realizes touching baldrick was not a good idea. I wish they had made another season like they planned:(
I think it is good that they stopped. It would only have gotten worse and tarnished its name. But i get what you mean, any new material of something you love is still good, regardless if it loses it quality along the way. Props so most British comedies who decide to end the series while its still at its peek as apposed to American comedies who decide to run it into the ground.
Watch the document about how they filmed Blackadder. First season cost so much and was so bad, they nearly had to cancel it. Next seasons had to do with lower budget and revamped formula (which in fact saved the show).
One of the most legendary, quotable and hilarios TV characters of all time. Rowling had to be at least partly inspired by Flashheart when she made Lockheart.
RIP Rick, you will always be THE genius of comedy. Thank you for filling my childhood and adulthood with amazing wit and talent and was privileged to see you live back in 2007.
@@joeogle7729 Well I may be packing the kind of tackle you’d expect to find dangling about behind the hind legs of a grand National winner, but I’m not entirely stupid.
Blackadder is so intelligent that when he mouth-fight he does absolutely nothing but the opponent (even the cool ones like that dude in the episode) still has to physically hurt him because he cant mouth-fight back.
"Unfortunately most of the infantry think you're a prat, ask them who they'd prefer to meet, squadron commander flashheart or the man who cleans out the public toilets in Aberdeen...They'd go for wee jock poo pong mcplop everytime!!" LOL
Well, I suppose so, but his mad, OTT performance as Flashheart needs to be placed alongside the 'normal' aspect of British decorum, and I just think this would be a difficult thing to achieve. What a blumming shame he went when he had so, so much more to give. Flasheart was always my favourite character in all of the 'Slackbladder' series, just like the Stephen Fry character, best used as a sprinkle, rather an thick layer of madness! ;-) Sad days....RIP Rik. "she's got a tongue like and electric eel, and she loves the taste of a man's tonsils...."
Kate Fox I bet he didn't have enough exposure in "BlackAdder" probably because Rowan Atkinson find his "scene-stealing" ability rather threatening LOL. I find him very underrated.
Oh me too hon! There does exist however a film in which he and Helena Bonham-Carter weave a gorgeous story. He plays a super-romantic hero...sigh. Called Dancing Queen from 1993. It's actually on Wiki, but I'm sure you can find it. Please try to find it, as I only have it on video, and will happily send you a copy if you're unsuccessful. GREAT FILM! I love Python, the 'Smack the Pony' girls, and Catherine Tate, Armstrong and Miller's RAF pilots talking street slang, but Rik Mayall just has that look of unpredictability that the Brits thrive on! So sad he's gone....others, worthless despots and terrorists should have gone before his turn in the queue. Check out the film Melvin, watch it with your beloved. You won't regret it!
I absolutely adore Rik Mayall.. It broke my heart when I heard about his death. It sucks being 19 because none of my friends know who he is :/ so when I cried about it they didn't understand the huge loss that this is! R.I.P Rik Mayall xxxxxxxx
I didn't know that he was in Black Adder until after his death, but I grew up with Drop dead Fred and man was I sad when he passed away :/ He made the lamest movie a masterpiece :(
2:58 - Amazing how the last line "it is like crufts in here" was done out of necessity as Rowan has a stammer and the original line was "it is like Battersea Dogs Home here", and when he tried to say it he got stuck on Battersea and could not say it. So they re-wrote it to crufts instead.
+mjbdvp Yes, he had it since he was young. He has overcome a lot of the problems with a stammer by now, but it has always been there. All the writers and cast of Blackadder spoke of it. He has big problems trying to pronounce plosives, that is letters B and P, that is why they invented the "Bob" character in Blackadder II because of the way Rowan approaches the letter B.
There was a documentary about Blackadder, two I think, Whole Rotten Saga is available here in full on UA-cam, and Blackadder 2008 BBC special which I think is only partly available here due to BBC rights. Check them out if you can ok?
+mjbdvp As a fellow stammerer B is a hard sound because you use all of your mouth or jaw to say it rather than your tounge and mouth if you notice how Rowan saids Bob in the episode notice how he pauses before he saids it Bob you can almost bounce onto it but only when you've mastered how i.e speech therapy

without a shadow of a doubt i know all of his lines by heart

Leeeeeeets do IT!
This Wee Jock Poo Pong McPlop sounds like a great chap.
He's the best friend you'll ever have. He gets a bit smelly, but he's a fine fellow.

I agree!

oh yes he could play flash here but could he do it on a rainy night in Stoke?
Saucier then a direct hit on a Heinz factory - what a line!
-MY GOD!
-Yes I suppose I am!
RIP Rik. Loved your work.
I worked for the Young Ones when they were on tour, as a roadie. Rik was a really quiet spoken guy, with an undertone of comic genius. Miss you dude.
MY GRANDMOTHER SMOKED HERSELF TO DEATH JUST SO WE COULD AFFORD THE ALBUM!
Of course she did. Of course she did the poor love-crazed old octogenarian.
How he says it is brilliant.....
@Rick O'Shay Yeah especially since the average age of a Baldrick is most likely lower than 50.
RIP Lord Flashheart 8'''(

unfortunately America is quantity ($) over quality. luckily the brits didnt fall that way & god help us dont take the polish off the french!
Interestingly, Blackadder got progressively better with each series.
@@lecco666 Yeah, the first series was dreadful.

exactly
J.k.even used a similar name
If that's not a hint, then I don't know what is
Even was blonde. What would have been hilarious is if Lockhart turned out to be as competent as Flashheart.
"Hey girls look at my machinery!"

both Flashearts were simply some of the best comedy moments this country has ever produced R.I.P

This series had more great one liners than any in history....and anyone that doesn't believe it....can 'bugger me with a fish fork'

He deserved to have spinoff of Flashheart.
He did, but pre Flasheart...He was Alan B'stard, look it up!
Thanks bridesmaid, like the beard!
Kate Fox Yes I knew he was in the New Statesman but a Flashheart spin-off would have been fabulous given that over-the-top characterization.

The part about feeling the "wind through your hair"... I couldn't take it. That was too rich.

Such woman has yet to be born :P
Maybe she has been and we just don't know it yet.

Nothing escapes you eh? :P
Well, the obvious doesn't escape me, that's for sure.
