PS4/Pro versions look good but natively only run at 30fps. There is a mod for PS4 and PS4 Pro to unlock the framerate so that it runs up to 60fps but both PS4/PS4 Pro struggle mightily to come anywhere close to a steady 60fps and the framerate is usually in the upper 30's. Best thing as far as consoles go is to just play the PS5 version which runs natively at 2160p resolution and a mostly steady 60fps. The PS3 version has no reason to exist anymore and looked like dog poop even back in 2011.@@midnightblue3285
Skyrim SE also used the updated Creation Engine used in the development of Fallout 4. The most notable improvement is the switch from 32-bit to 64-bit, which on consoles didn’t make much of a difference. On PC however, the amount of actors you could have on screen was vastly increased, and the overall stability of the game was improved. This allowed modders to create considerably more resource intensive content without worrying about memory related crashes and sluggish performance.

Don't know if anyone has mentioned it but at 8:00 the reason you move at different speed is that it's based on the average height of a race. High elves being the tallest move fastest, wood elves being smallest (iirc) move the slowest. Orcs are actually second tallest so the difference shouldn't be too huge. The issue with console versions is that getting identical weather/lighting is near impossible. Getting the same weather at the same location and the same time of day is really tricky. Few suggestions you could try in the future: There are some abilities you can obtain to manipulate weather, for example the "clear skies" shout or Auriels Bow from the Dawnguard DLC I'm not so sure about this but starting a new game should at least have the same weather right then and there and maybe there are some scripted quests where the weather is set to something specific so you'd only have to get the daytime identical. Other than that interior levels should have mostly static lighting.
Thanks for leaving this comment. It is really helpful. I was not aware of the height difference impacting speed... it does make sense. Good point re Auriel's Bow. Didn't think of that. Interestingly, for most door transitions to outside and fast travel locations you do not end up looking out over a vista. e.g. leaving the keep at Markarth you are facing a huge pillar, not the city you know is spread out below you. Bethesda obviously did this to reduce the graphics load, and hence load times, but it made it hard to find a good place where there was a mix of close-in, middle and distant objects. Shaw's Hold (?) was a good exception. Exactly as you say, the first shot of escaping Helgen (or "Just Leaving Helgen" as it is named in my files) is the one consistent time/weather save point for all systems. I gotta say though unfortunately it didn't make for a profound comparison shot. I think maybe because it was a very well manicured vista. I did some interior shots not included in the video, including the Riverwood Trader, but a fireplace produces an ever-changing light source, so shadows differed between shots - and such differences are what the eye notices first, not texture quality or resolution (IMO). So overall, it was a long process to get those shots, but in the process I learned some more about the work that went in to make the game. Cheers!

Awesome. Thanks for saying so! Yes, I want to do Oblivion but needed to have a break from Tamriel after all that Skyrim so I'm finalising a New Vegas vid which will be out soon. Probably Oblivion next. Cheers!
@@ramnexus Sweet! I might have to skip your New Vegas vid because sadly I still haven't been able to get through it yet, it's so broken on PS3 it became unplayable for me. Eventually I'll get a gaming PC and enjoy it properly.
This just makes me wanna dive back into Skyrim. Just waiting for the perfect moment I guess. A new mod loadout on the Series X when I get one, and I'll be playing again.
I gotta say I am quite impressed with how well Skyrim looks on Xbox with mods. The fact it is possible at all is impressive. Even on PS5 mod support has turned Skyrim into a smart-looking game.
I played the heck out of the 360 Legendary edition but I'll be honest i don't even remember what Vanilla Skyrim looks like anymore because I've used mods ever since i got the Special edition on Xbox, nor would i ever want to play it Vanilla ever again.
I agree. One thing I removed from the vid due to time was that I always play with mods - on consoles and PC - except when capturing footage or collecting achievements of course. Good mods can bring the game to life.
Loving the content! Hoping to see the things about Skyrim VR and the switch, plus the very special feature one console had that not many people know about. Keep up the good work
Thanks heaps! That upcoming Skyrim video you described should be quite fun, but I've put Skyrim aside for a little while so it doesn't get stale for me. Focusing on Fallout New Vegas next. Cheers!

Amazing video, very detailed and well executed. I’d imagine getting all the footage took awhile! I’ve never played the Elder Scroll series or Skyrim, as science fiction is more my cup of tea. But I can’t deny the beauty of Skyrim. Looking forward to your New Vegas video!
I learned something today! Thank you for pointing out the XSX 120 issue! I wondered all this time why, with mods and without the game would have these studders!!! I immediately set the box to 60 and loaded up Skyrim to check it out! Problem solved! THANK YOUUUU!!! 🙏
Ah excellent! I'm so glad it helped. I have since noticed that there is no stuttering with Fallout 4 in the same setup for some reason, just Skyrim. Cheers!
@@ramnexus i honestly didn’t notice it in Fallout 4 but then I’m running it with an FPS mod (instead of FPS boost) so I can play it in 4K @60. I made another post here for you to read 😉. Cheers 🍻 my friend!
Another great video! Appreciate all the effort you've put in to these. I'll be looking out for your Oblivion video, this was my first Bethesda game and my favourite, although playing through Morrowind at the minute I'm starting to change my mind.
Thanks heaps for your support! Gotta say I never finished Morrowind but it had the greatest “foreign yet familiar” feel to it. And I remember the sense of freedom blowing my mind!
Your character can run faster or slower if you're wearing either heavy armor or light armor. I think there's a perk for heavy armor that lets you run just as fast when you wear light armor, forgot the perk name. I know someone in comments said it has to do with what race you pick, but it has to do with heavy/light armor you wear not race height.
It'll be interesting to see when the PS5 Pro is released at the end of 2024/early 2025 if Bethesda releases a PS5 Pro upgrade patch for Skyrim. If so I'm not expecting any graphical enhancements to be implemented (there's nothing else to do until the game gets a new edition which is almost certain to happen one of these years, likely adding ray-tracing), but rather that the patch will just have Skyrim on PS5 take full advantage of the PS5 Pro hardware improvements to alleviate the framerate from dropping below 60fps. PS5 Pro reportedly has a pretty decent increase in memory bandwidth so that should stabilize the framerate from dropping when alpha effects are filling the screen or casting certain spells. Also, anti-aliasing was a huge upgrade for Special Edition on consoles.
I should mention too that game stability was a major upgrade too, as PS3/360 had major freezing/crashing issues. Special Edition/Anniversary Edition now running at 64-bit from 32-bit, game stability is top notch now, not just with use of mods but for the game as it is normally without mods. The game is so well polished now and stable.
Yes, looking forward to see what the PS5 can do! FYI I recently measured frame-rate for Skyrim PS5 (see my latest vid) and it is a solid 60, with only the rarest of dips at times I don’t think we’d notice. As I recall this is an improvement on when it was first released as a native PS5 game.
Mods sometimes not always subtract, like some high res or redone textures are not better than the original. But there are some mods that do make a substantial difference, increasing LOD with that engine is one, better mesh also, and one that really helps hidding the poor LOD is bigger trees. But why play skyrim when you can play something way more engaging like BG3 is beyond me.
I agree that some mods which try to improve graphics actually don't make the game look better, though that is down to personal preference i guess. I like your idea of using bigger trees to hide poor LOD. I've not thought of that before. BG3 is great, but a very different type of game - each to their own :) Cheers!
The thing about mods on consoles, is those of you achievement hunting, using mods cancels any progress........ Though it does warn you in very small print, my poor pal played over 10 hours and asked ''what the hell do you have to do too get a bloody achievement''. We soon established he was using mods, therefore, no achievements/trophies.
Good point. I missed that message too and it took me a while to work it out. It is also true for the Steam version on PC. I played my 'completion' game last year with no mods to get all the achievements, so it is now nice to be able to play with additional visual, gameplay tweaks.
Skyrim never impressed me graphically the way Morrowind and Oblivion did when they came out. Not that they are bad but I just don’t get as impressed anymore as each generation feels evolutionary instead of revolutionary. It’s an amazing game all the same though and with all the improvements over the years it looks great although you can tell it’s aging at this point. Still prefer it to Starfield though as I couldn’t stand that game. Skyrim is a world you just want to explore again and again. I wonder if the next Elder Scrolls will be as good.
I agree, I mainly see new games evolving established game designs now. I was probably most impressed with Morrowind as it was a big step forward in game 'type' and it showed off a game world which was strange and compelling. For some reason (comfort game?) I am playing thru vanilla Skyrim on my PS5 at the moment and the main thing I notice is the basic lighting method used compared to modern games. More so than the textures or model fidelity. I am looking forward to seeing what mods I can bring to bear to improve the lighting. Cheers!
Yes, I read about that bug. Not sure if it ever got fixed. Read that once the save game gets over a certain size on PS3 then performance (then the game) crashed. I've not played it long enough on PS3 to find out. Cheers!
No matter the console or re-release edition of this game, Nazeem will still always be an asshole and treat you like a worthless mudcrab for not visiting the cloud district
I don't usually comment on UA-cam videos, but I just wanted to say that this was a really nice, chill, well informed video. I remember 12 year old me, launching up Skyrim for the first time. To say that my world was changed, might even be an understatement. Never had I experienced such an immersive world, full of this calm beauty and serenity (and vampires and demons but let's look past that ha). It made my life more bearable, and gave me a bit of an escape from bullying. Skyrim will forever have a special place in my heart. But enough about me. This was a really good video, and I have liked and subscribed. Will you be checking out Starfield? It could be pretty cool to watch some videos with you about Starfield. I'm very much looking forward to that game. Anyways, I hope everything goes well with the channel - I'm definitely interested in watching more!
I think "calm beauty and serenity" is a really good description, and I laughed when you mentioned vampires too! I really appreciate your post. Feedback like yours is very motivating. As for Starfield - yes I plan to buy it on PC and d/load the Xbox GamePass version. Maybe a 1st impressions vid or an initial PC/Xbox comparison. I am conscious there will be many YT videos about it so I am trying to think of a topic which will "add to the conversation" (as they say). Cheers!
Anyone know if the series x version of Skyrim runs at native 4k now with an update? It ran at dynamic 4k the last time I checked about a year or so back. I know the ps5 version runs native 4k. Just curious is all
Yes, I did notice all Skyrim screenshots from PS4 Pro console were darker than the same shots from the PS5 (both the native PS5 version and the PS4 Pro version running on PS5). And this was with the brightness set the same for all copies of the game. So, for me, it was the console, not the game version that had made it brighter. Very strange, I don't understand why.
Howdy @0carlitos099 Yes, both Dawnguard and Dragonborn are (in my opinion) very good but Hearthfire is only so-so, being primarily a house construction DLC. Dawnguard takes place in Skyrim so I assumed it was just extra quests, but there's a lot more to it than that. Dragonborn takes place on an island off the coast of Skyrim (Solstheim) and has a lot of cross-over with Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind (Solstheim was also in a Morrowind DLC) which gives it a different feel to the rest of Skyrim (the game and the place). Recommended!
I agree. The mods for it on Xbox can make it look so awesome. I have managed to crash my Xbox a couple of times by piling too many on at once though! 😳
Yes, I totally agree! It actually inspired me to make a video looking at the importance of landmarks in open-world games and how they help with immersion. ua-cam.com/video/4ISH1qbvnOQ/v-deo.html
I played this game very little on 360. But extensively on my PS4 Pro and Xbox one X both of which I'd upgraded their storage to SSD. I bought a PS5 and saw no major differences in the game at all. I didn't bother to upgrade the one x as Microsoft have become stagnant in innovation and lack of support to long term customers.
About a year after PS5 came out it got the official “native PS5” patch which allowed for 60fps. If you tried the PS5 before then, then I agree, it would have been the same as the PS4 Pro. In fact it WAS the PS4 Pro version just running on the PS5.
Bethesda games have always been better on XB over PS. I say this cause I've played alot on both. The XB controllers have a better design for RPG/Shooter games. Especially triggers. XB has mods which Sony doesn't want after they failed to protect customer info. My PS3 ended up becoming the best dvd player and XB360 black version is when Sony lost me as customer. No one ever gives credit to XB. Better looking more powerful system, controller, better backward games & features, Game Pass, exclusives ES6, Fallout 5, Starfield, Every Obsidian & Beth game, Call of Duty, Forza, Gears, Halo, Fable, State of Decay etc. PS exclusives are mostly interactive movie games. PC is best which is what I'm saving for but Series X & Switch OLED are what I got covers every thing. My 2 cents on this.
Nice! I also used my PS3 as my prime DVD/Blu-ray player for years. Good times! I might be poking a tiger by saying this, but IMHO if you have a Series X then (with mods installed) you're getting 90% of the Skyrim PC experience. I can say this as someone who owns a beefy PC and an XBSX and plays Skyrim modded a lot.
Its sad they ruined it on the series s by forcing 1440p ): I had a perfect expierience on the series S until that patch came. Have not played Skyrim since. Had a great expierience on my Panasonic plasma on 1080p 60fps
Hi. Yes you can. In the Skyrim PS5 menu there is a transfer option which allows you to choose a PS4 save to transfer over. I think the PS4 save needs to be on the console. Can’t go from PS5 back to PS4 thou.
I haven’t played this game until a few days ago so I have no nostalgia for it whatsoever. I can not stand how flat and terrible the textures look. Everything looks so fake even on the anniversary edition
Thanks for the comment. I guess for people like me who have played it for years the first impression of playing the game when it came out is still with us. I do wonder if it is the old lighting system as much as the textures that make it look fake. See this link for the most recent effort to bring 2023 gaming graphics to Skyrim by using path-traced lighting: ua-cam.com/video/bGmZtL0kZt0/v-deo.htmlsi=wT_L19TW02LiQ3IC Cheers!
Not sure how you can play it at all. Literally this game is completely unplayable on PS5 after a certain amount of hours. Just nonstop crashes. It's like its not completely compatible with PS5. This is with no mods. I thought maybe i was alone with this but many on reddit have the same issue. Ironically, I've had little crashes on Fallout 4 with 200+ hours on PS5. What a shame, but then again I dont expect much of Bethesda anymore.
Sounds like similar to what happened to it on PS3 when it launched. Something about once the savegame reached a certain size it caused instability. If it is the same issue it’s amazing to think that it is still present on PS5. Or maybe not surprising. Sux either way.

I only have 30 yrs. of gaming left so I'm hoping my fantasy worlds become a reality. You never really age, only body wise.
Yeah I've only just recently come across your channel and your content is right up my street not to mention a creator more my age that I can relate too ,so yeah thanks.
Cheers. I knew there had to be folks like me out there!
@@ramnexus yup were out there lol.
Very helpful piece of work, thank you
Awesome. Glad it helped. Cheers!
@@ramnexus current gen Fallout 4 is out soon ❤️
@@NB_NB_NB That will be awesome. Can't wait!
Great video! Would love to see more Oblivion content since it’s my favourite. Either way, looking forward to more!
@@ramnexus There's even a mod to re-enable achievements on PC. Necessary even when you only use unoffiical patches and graphics mods.
Nice comparison video!
Cheers! Thanks!
Love the video great video. I really enjoy seeing the improvements made overtime in these games.
Awesome! Thanks for that. I'm glad you liked it.
Love your vids man. Been really enjoying them recently!
Awesome! Thanks for saying so. Cheers.
Amazing video brother.
Cheers! Thanks for saying so. Glad people are liking it.
Strong work! Looking forward to more of your work!
Cheers! Thanks for saying so.
Cheers!
@@ramnexus yeah I’m excited to see those too
I just want to thank you for mentioning the fix for the XSX stuttering issue! 🙏
I shared this out on Twitter but I don’t see your Twitter handle here, if you have one.
Great video my friend and many many thanks again!
Awesome. Glad it was useful! @ramnexus is my twitter handle and YT channel. I probably should include that in the description :) Thanks!
Awesome. Glad you liked it. Thanks for the feedback. As a sci-fi fan I bet you're looking forward to Starfield! New Vegas video is 80% done! :)
Great work my friend. I loved the video and your personality. I'll be back for more!
Excellent. Thanks for the feedback. I’ll be making some more Elder Scrolls videos soon, just gotta get Fallout out of my system! Cheers.
Subscribed as you asked so politely 😊 Also great video.
Awesome, thanks! Glad you liked it and thanks for the sub!
Greetings from Brazil. I really like your videos, congratulations on the great work. Hugs.
Thanks very much for saying so. I'm really glad you enjoyed it! Cheers!
Enjoyed your video. Subbed
You rock! Thanks for the sub. Glad you enjoyed it.
Great video!
Thanks for saying so. Cheers!
Very informative video.
Cheers!
Great video
Thanks for saying so. Cheers!
As a kid(around 13), I thought Skyrim was so realistic.
When i played Skyrim on 360 in 2011 I was very impressed - though i was *a bit* older then 13 :) Funny how our 'standards' change over time!
Great video👍, I wish Skyrim had gotten more DLC's
Thanks. Yea, I agree. Maybe they should have replaced house building with something more adventurous 👍
This mams robco hat is fucking awesome.
Cheers!
Cheers!
Thank you for ur time mate, this really helped, do u know when the evolution of this game is going to new gen consoles?
Original ps3 version was flat out broken and still is...the bigger your save file got the SLOWER the game would run until it would not run anymore....
Yep, agreed. I thought it would be funny to have a montage of killcam footage involving him. Think most people would understand :)
Just curious is all
I wish Bethesda would add an option to go back to the original lighting..its too bright
@@ramnexus Its the remaster I think..they made the lighting brighter..
I’ve never played Skyrim DLC, is it worth a play through?
@@ramnexus imma check it out thanks
If you mod it on series x.... You can make it look damn near current gen
I agree. The mods for it on Xbox can make it look so awesome. I have managed to crash my Xbox a couple of times by piling too many on at once though! 😳
It's so bizarre when you compare the lush beautiful Skyrim map to the empty, boring planets in Starfield 😢
@@ramnexus Yeah it was one of the first games I tried on it. Special Edition. I got my PS5 January 21.
I can't get on with the Xbox style of controller, and I play all PC games with a PS4 controller. The triggers are not better on the Xbox controller.
Its sad they ruined it on the series s by forcing 1440p ): I had a perfect expierience on the series S until that patch came. Have not played Skyrim since. Had a great expierience on my Panasonic plasma on 1080p 60fps
can you transfer save from ps4 to ps5?
See this link for the most recent effort to bring 2023 gaming graphics to Skyrim by using path-traced lighting: ua-cam.com/video/bGmZtL0kZt0/v-deo.htmlsi=wT_L19TW02LiQ3IC
Cheers!
Well, I play Skyrim in 144 fps 😊😊
Me too 👍
Not sure how you can play it at all.
I have over 170 hours on PS5 and it only crashed on me once.
