North Freerace Review

- In this video I'm gonna test the @NorthWindsurfing Freerace 6.8 (2023).
The Freerace has been made available by @VandenBergSurf for a review.
As you may know the Freerace is a FIN sail that's ment for those who want to go fast but demand a more forgiving sail than those slalom racing machines.
In the review I'm gonna take a look at the performance of the Freerace on the water.
North windsurfing has introduced the first big revolution in the making of the windsurf sail since a long time by introducing a completely new way of producing sails and by introducing new materials.
The test will consist of a light wind and a high wind test to see how it performs in both conditions.
For this review I'll use my medium slalom board (Starboard iSonic 107L 2015) and 37cm Sonntag SL-PRO.

Thanks a lot for sharing your experience. A very interesting sail. I would be interested in a direct performance and handling comparison with a conventional Free Race Sail (with Cambers), e.g. the S_Pace

you're welcome.
It's absolutely an interesting sail.
It's revolutionary in the way it's build and it has very interesting features like the aircamber system and the split batten system in the front part of the battens which allow you to tune for an asymmetrical profile for speedruns.
I'll keep it mind but the reviews I can do also depend on the availability of the test equipment I can get my hands on.

When you will test a North foil sail ? That would be highly interesting. I think no one did it yet ( at least to my knowledge ) !

Great review. I do not quite understand 'backhand pressure': While sailing with a freeride sail and trying to push for some speed, I indeed noticed that my backhand was getting more and more strained. But why? Balance point?
Hi Fons,
thank you and you are correct.
The sail doesn't release the wind in the lower part of the sail and the pressure point of the sail shifts to the back as the wind increases.
This can be fixed by increasing the loose leech further (maybe even down to the cross batten), but that will come at the expense of some low end grunt.
When I know a sail will do this I will shift the harness lines a bit more to the back and further apart to cope with the shifts of the balance point during sailing.
This way I have more "trim range" back-forward in my lines and it also makes sure the balance is perfect at the maximum wind.
The harness line position will be a bit off when the wind decreases and it will put a bit more strain on your fronthand in that case, but it's better for me then maximum strain on the backhand during the gusts.
A perfect (free)race sail has the same balance point from minimum up to maximum wind so you can have your harness line attachment points close together and you can keep it in that position no matter how strong the wind will be and still be perfectly balanced in your harness.

Hoi, de fin maat die je opgeeft lijkt mij veel te groot. Normaal (en ik heb ook een iSonic 107 van 2014) gebruik ik een Tribal MK2 38 cm. Maar met een MK2 34 gaat het eigenlijk nog veel beter. Getest met de North Race 6.8 en met de Freespeed 6.8 (video komt binnenkort). Bij deze video: ua-cam.com/video/t4jp0rVKO8Y/v-deo.htmlsi=8KIg1pRRdTbhCfme bij 5.34 gebruik ik die combi. Was een topdag. Dus ik raad je toch eens aan om een kortere fin te gebruiken mocht je nog eens een NORTH Race in handen hebben.

De vin maat die je wilt gaan gebruiken is afhankelijk van het doel voor ogen.
Een free-rider zal ergens rond de 40cm gaan zitten voor de vin lengte met deze combi.
Op vlak water en deep downwind speed runs gebruik je kleinere vinnen dan in slalom trim waar ik de combi voor gebruikte.
Daarnaast is het soort/type vin ook nog van invloed op de maat.

Even als toevoeging.
Dit zeil heb ik van Vandenbergsurf Almere gekregen voor de test, maar het is zoals ik zeg in de video een oude proto waarbij je max 2 panels loose leech kan krijgen.
Hierdoor was er weinig release en veel backhand pressure waardoor je het board moeilijk op de vin kon laten lopen en erg veel plakte, zelfs met mijn 37cm vin.
In mijn geval zou ik eerder groter dan kleiner pakken vwb vin.....
Misschien had jij een final versie van het zeil met meer loose leech?

@@Windsurfcoach Toch zou ik je adviseren als je met een productiezeil op een slalomboard gaat op relatief vlak water gaat testen, een goede 34 cm fin te proberen. De Free Race zal geheel verdwijnen is wat ik gehoord heb, de Freespeed moet een gedeelte overnemen, en een gedeelte zal naar de Race zeilen gaan. Mijn ervaring met de Freespeed is dat je best wel een kleine fin kan gebruiken, ondanks dat de Freespeed meer backhand pressure levert dan de Race. Maar wie weet zien we elkaar aan de waterkant. Kunnen we samen wat testen/uitproberen.

De Freespeed heb ik nog niet in mijn handen gehad dus kan ik nog niets over zeggen.
Laat maar weten via een DM als je een keertje samen met mij de Freespeed aan de tand wil voelen.
Dan maak ik er een test video van.

As a matter of interest, what van are you driving? I’m considering downsizing from a VW Transporter but want something that will comfortably hold a few boards, masts and sails. Thanks - great video.

I thought it was all Duotone now?

North sails IS BACK as an independent windsurf sail brand.
They brought a new way of producing sails and new materials to the windsurf market.
Of course everything needs to be built up again, but they are back.

I know, I know.
It sounds pretty stupid as it's always very exciting to test new stuff and I always want to do the testing asap.
I got it for testing together with the North Race a while ago, but had not found any time yet to test it.......
There are just not enough hours in a day and there will never be as there are always a million things to do.
