I recently treated myself to a box of the inktense. pencils and I love them. The sheer colour of them is stunning and you only need a light layer of pencil to bring out the most intense colour. I do agree that a better quality paper is preferable. You can also mix the pencils and the intense sticks. Have fun with you new products

Thank you! Yes I was amazed at how much colour there was from the sticks and I loved using them. The pencils are on my wishlist for my next purchase!! Have fun with yours too :)

Really enjoyed your video and watching you draw. It's fun getting new art supplies and trying them out. Don't be discouraged, I thought the drawing was great.

Thank you! Considering I haven't practiced in so long, it wasn't too bad!! I'll definitely keep at it!

I do love Derwent. I especially love their graphitint, I bought a 12-pack and then I had to turn around and buy their 24 pack and I think that's all they have on that one. What really upsets me is Derwent discontinued they're solid sticks of watercolor, Aquatone, and it's really hard to find anyone who sells them. They came in a 24 pack

Oh, I never tried the Aquatone, they sound lovely. I've been a fan of Derwent since my first pack of pencils bought from the National Gallery when I was nine. And I still have them! (The company was Rexel Cumberland then though).

Watercolor paper works best with the inktense. I actually use a brush with mine and lift color straight from the block and then paint onto the paper.

Thank you, I'll use watercolour paper next time. Yes, I enjoyed flicking the the colour off the sticks and onto the paper :)

Great video and just love your old range cooker. You will find that paper will make a massive difference to the laydown and saturation of these water-soluble mediums. I find that a good hot-pressed watercolour paper works best or a good quality, heavy weight cartridge paper like Daler-Rowney 220 gsm Heavy Weight Cartridge Pads. A sized paper will allow you to push the colour around much more on the paper when wet and will give you much more control. Normal sketch paper is far too soft and absorbent. "NOT or cold pressed paper is good for textural effects but it is more difficult to blend out the marks laid down. Unlike normal watercolour, you may find synthetic brushes work best. You often don't need them to hold too much water and the stiffer hair blends out the marks better. A 1/4" flat brush is often your best friend with these. INKTENSE blocks are amazing in their versatility and so vivid, you can draw and blend or apply a wet brush direct to the bar just like a watercolour pan paint or you can use a knife blade to scrape off sprinkles onto wet paper and because they dry permanent, they are great for under-painting when used with mixed media. Have fun..!

Thank you for all the advice Peter, that's really helpful. Yes, I definitely need to get myself some better paper before I have another go - and I'm pretty sure I have a synthetic flat brush somewhere so I'll try that too. Thanks!

Haha! Well I didn't think I needed anything because of course I hoarded all the stuff I bought years ago; but now I've discovered there's all these new products I might be shopping for art supplies a little more frequently!!

Was you using water colour paper? It looked like ordinary sketch paper with the terrible warping!!

See 4:18 for when I talk about the paper I'm using.
