  • I Own The Most Unreliable BMW - Some Of The Issues And How To Take Care Of the E60 M5
    I own what Doug DeMuro and Hoovies Garage call the most unreliable BMW. I own the BMW E60 M5, and there are issues with the car. Don't get me wrong, it can be unreliable. However, there are ways to take care of the car and ways to mitigate some of these issues.
    In this video, I tell you all about the issues I've experienced with this great E60 M5. I also spend some time with one of the best exotic car mechanics in Edmonton with Ed at Elegant motors (Elegantmotors.ca). Ed talks to us about how the oil contributes to problems like the rod bearing failures we see with this #BMW #E60 #M5.

    My father owned a series of M cars through the years.
    He maintained them by the book and although he drove them hard he never abused them.
    Always warmed them up thoroughly and religiously checked fluid levels and tire pressures.
    All have lasted between 190 to 225 k miles with few problems.
    Never left him stranded either.

      Tbh they are necessities for all engines, but the tighter the tolerances the more important it is. BMW normally have tight tolerances, so yes it's very important.
      When I was learning to drive I was told to give a car 30s-2minutes to warm up before driving, and I stick to it today. Start the car before putting your seatbelts on, and ideally wait until the heater starts to warm up.

If you do opposite you'll feel like shit and not gonna be able to function properly throughout your day. Same applies to the m5 or any car. I really hate people who just bash the e60 m5 it's an amazing car and it's good if you look after it people seem to forget about taking care of it tho just hop in and race away and listen to the noise. The warmup procedures are important on any race car engine even on the JDM racecars like the GTR with it's RB inline six engines. Or even an American V8 like the Corvette LS/LT because the high viscosity take forever from the amounts of pressure from the cold temperatures and ingredients like sulfur. Your mechanic has great knowledge like my friend who takes care of my E46...

    The thing with Hoovie is that failing is his shtick, he knows enough to get in trouble and its entertaining enough for him to afford to make those mistakes; despite his best efforts to mitigate issues. Everyone hopes he succeeds, but it usually doesn't happen, so he gets in over his head on cars just to keep the show on the road.
    Whereas you have an engineer's mind and understand the issues, people who truly want an E60 M5 will find your video, weigh your extensive knowledge and make an informed decision. Keep up the great work.

    I don't care what Doug says. I bought an E63 M6. The driving experience can't be replicated for what I paid. Ultimately you are getting near supercar performance. I’ve owned mine for 3 years and my advice is ... warm the car up gently by that I mean drive it below 3k revs for ten mins that’s all you need to do plus have the oil sampled every couple of years for signs of wear and tear regarding metals ( rod bearings ) always keep the oil topped up and try and use shell V power petrol that’s all I use .. BMW recommends to not sit there and let the engine warm up but to drive easy for a while to get it moving and warming. I have twin turbos and at 126k miles have used 0-40 weight every 7-10k miles. And I NEVER punch it until that oil gauge comes off that 160 mark. Car still drives like when I bought it. No leaks, no ticking, no new vanos solenoida. But yet, I see the M3, 4, and 5 owners hammering the throttle in the parking lot right at start up sending shivers up my spine.

    Hi Mark, good video as per normal, very informative. Honestly my biggest fear with the e60 m5 are all the electronic malfunctions from the Bangle era electrical systems, but I would still love a 2010 6mt e60 m5 and have been considering selling my e90 m3 and picking up a 2010 e60 m5 or a 2010 e63 m6. Any chance you could do a video comparing those 2 amazing beasts in 6mt form?
    Also, I have a very specific warm up procedure for my s65 engine. If you turn the car on and just let it idle, there is very little oil pressure/mvmnt in neutral. In order for oil to flow, it's got to have load on the engine. First i will raise my garage door about 2 feet or so. Next, I have comfort access so I will turn the car on with the key in my lap, turn on my A.C. to 3 to put a little load on the engine, lock the car from the outside and come back in 5 or so minutes and then drive off. I still keep it less that 3500 rpm until up to operating temp, but it gets up to temp so much quicker and drives better when I do this. I know some people find this crazy, but these engines need a more in depth warm up procedure to keep the engine alive. I don't care about the 0 mpg. My warm up procedure in my audi a4 is, insert key, turn on engine, wait 1 minute and then drive off normally. Quite the difference.
    Question about the the 0 w 40 weight oil...thats great when it's cold but remember it's a high revving engine. The 0 w 40 will not protect the engine from damage in the upper RPM range (5000 rpm+) like 10 w 60 will due to the shear stress on the oil molecules. That is why BMW chose that oil for our engines. Look at it from a mechanical/logical standpoint. You know your car EATS oil just like mine does, especially on a road trip. If the engine is devouring the thick, strong oil we use, what do you think will happen with the less viscous, less resistant to shear stress 0 w 40? 0 w 40 is great for starting and getting up to operating temp in very cold weather, but when the engine gets up to operating temp and you rev it hard, damage could occur due to the thinner weaker oil. There are SO MANY threads about this on the m3 forums of Bimmerpost. I also change my oil every 5k miles.
    Keep those videos coming!!

Most people are very bad at daily maintenance ragarding their cars or too lazy to learn about cars. • @ECPP
      @ECPP  5 років тому

      Yes, the worst thing that you will do with a lengthy warm up is moderately wear valve guides, but not warming enough can prevent oil from adequately lubricating the bearings and cam lobes among other parts which can lead to you know what....rod bearing failure. At the end of the day the clearances are tight and oil is thick, bad combo.

I support your video and driving one of those was one of the best driving experience of my life. bottom line, if you can not afford the maintenance of this car and do not know how to use this car ..... do not buy this car and complain about it. this is performance car and comes with cost .....

I live in Brazil, and maintenance will be harsh on my pocket, but what the hell, why not. If you could answer me someday, bottom of line, 0w40 or 20w60? I won't never ever experience such cold enviroment as yours (usually my city goes from 25°C to 35°C regular basis). Thanks anyways, keep it up!

      20w60 is even thicker than the OEM, I would go 5w50 or 0w50. Check the XTR series from Bardahl and also the Full Metal additive(which contains Zinc, which is good for the bearings). BUT: in the owner's manual half way down page 62 it states: "Do not warm up the engine with the car at a standstill; it is preferable to set off, driving at moderate engine speeds".

    People are scared because of the repair costs. They think it's unaffordable for most working stiffs. "A couple grand here, a couple grand there" isn't disposable income for most. How much have you spent on this car? Maybe knowing that will add a dose of reality and dispel the myth of unreliability and being affordable.

    Hi Mark, Your mechanic recommended very regular oil changes, BMW appear to have very long milage intervals between oil changes which may not be good for the engine. Should you ignore BMW oil change intervals and get the oil changed on a much more regular basis.

    Warming cars up - well I heard that is some countries is forbidden - (Germany?) and car makers say the best warming is slowly get on road and don't RPM too much. And the rod bearings - for sure there must be some design or material problem, cos other cars are driven the same way and are just fine. Good engines use car makers' oil specification and should last at least 250 000kms.

    Beautiful M6. I’ve always loved the E60 because it was bold and just bad ass. 1 question though, if the rod bearings, vanos & throttle actuators were replaced by improved parts by the factory, is it likely to fail again ?

    • @ECPP
      @ECPP  5 років тому +1

      Great questions, the Vanos could and would again, the throttle actuators can be the same but an option is an aftermarket outfit that changes the internal plastic gears to a metal unit and should more or less last the life of the car, and the bearings, the only improvement really comes with the aftermarket which helps but does not totally solve the issue, combined with good maintenance practices, and the use of a slightly lighter oil. Remember the tolerances are tighter in these cars than most so most cars do not see these issues. Always warm the car adequately and this will go a long way for preventative maintenance.

    10W60 is made for high revolution engine.

    It makes me laugh that people are scared of E60 M5's (and modern cars with complex electronics) because of electronics. Electronics have a shelf life and people don't understand that. Hell, my 1JZ sensors (granted 25+ years old) went to shit.
    People also beat their cars to shit. Drive when cold, rev on cold starts, improper oil change intervals, ignoring service manual tips etc.
    But, this is a good deal for mechanically inclined people and people in the know.

  • @DVX755
    @DVX755 4 роки тому

    Uh, there's a reason these cars loose their value and people put out videos about the reliability, because every word is true. Its as if BMW DESIGNS these things to fail. I had an E36 M3 which was ok, but I heard that car is a Toyota compared to the new BMW's. Yes these cars need some care, but Rod bearings, timing chains, plastic parts disintegrating, multiple electronic issues even on newer BMW's, VANOS and a host of other issues make these cars UN-ownable by all but the most die-hard, mechanically inclined or deep-pocketed individuals. Even guys who love these cars have complaints. And don't even get me started on the newer BMW with twin turbos in the HOTTEST part of an already melting engine. Isn't there a class-action lawsuit again BMW?

    Strangely enough this X5 has a fuel consumption gauge INSTEAD of an engine temperature gauge on the dash ! Ridiculous and useless gauge.
    There is a way to get the engine temp, but it requires to enter the last 6 digits of my VIN into the cars main computer. 🤦‍♂️. It’s a one shot deal, it doesn’t continue to display, after you shut the car off it deletes the info.
