I agree with everything you said.
Also, keep in mind, Lane had very regimented days/times that Rory could hang out with her. So she probably had very little time with her as kids. They mentioned in an episode that it took Mrs. Kim awhile to warm up to the idea of having Rory around. So Rory's *only* friend as a kid she probably barely saw. Lorelai was her only friend...and (maybe an unpopular opinion) I think Lorelai wanted it that way. She didn't actively push Rory to make friends her own age. Anyways, Lane on the other hand was always around her mom's church group friends & their kids, and mentioned a few people in school (doing band & cheerleading) so even if she wasn't close to them she was being socialized. Rory wasn't.

Okay to be fair Marty was not a great friend either. He was definitely that guy who wanted to be friends until it’s clear that you don’t want to date him and then drops you like a hot rock. And he’s the one who initiated the whole let’s lie to Lucy about knowing each other thing.

She certainly was a bad friend to Lane at times.
But Paris bullied her extensively during her time at Chilton. If anyone was the toxic person in that friendship, it was Paris.

Okay okay I could be wrong but Paris had character development and became a better person in a lot of ways especially after her failure to get inro harvard...Rory on the other hand just became a worse person imo

Paris was constantly saying that Rory was her best friend and affirming her all the time even in the last episodes when they graduate Yale and she hugs her and is like “you’re going to do great things with your life Rory” and Rory is like 😐 oh wow thx?

I’m also wondering if the whole ‘my mum is my best friend’ has anything to do with her other friendships (or lack thereof)

I think Paris and Lane learned to live on crumbs of kindness and attention because of their families, so Rory might seem like a decent friend. 'Not a girl's girl', exactly. From the first episode at her old high school, she's portrayed as 'not like other girls'. Then Lane conveys that the other SH girls think she's a Chilton snob, but Rory's oblivious to other peoples' feelings, as usual. For Sabrina fans, there was an episode where Val wanted to be a cheerleader and Sabrina (also a journalism student) shamed her too. (I think ASP borrowed heavily from Sabrina and Blossom) Then look how Rory treated the 30 Something Gang in AYITL. Surely she grew up with them, and publicly rejects being associated with them. Ew. After 20 years, I just sort of mentally filter out Rory and focus on the other characters and cozy set design🍁❄😄

Love this take! Didn't even analyze how she treated the 30-somethings and tried to differentiate herself from them despite being in the exact same situation

I liked how Rory and Paris evolved from mortal enemies to best friends, but yeah why did Lane stay friends with her? Rory never put Lane first.

Devil's Advocate: Rory was constantly busy with school and her mom was her best friend. She and her community took up a lot of time. With Lane, she may have adopted the attitude after constantly being told how much better her life was than Lane's and that being pretty much the main drama in their relationship until rory finally had some intrigue of her own. Finally, Paris was an actual BULLY pretty much the whole time she knew her (into adulthood too, outting competition above her friend) and that whole trio flipped flopped on her early so why would she put in that much effort into a conditional relationship?

This is me being biased by my experience.
For the question, “why doesn’t she have any other friends from childhood?”
Not counting Rory being self-centered, but people like Rory struggle to make friends. They are treated as “weirdos” and don’t have the same interests as their peers and it makes it hard to fit in.
So even having one friend is nice.
When she went to Chilton, she wasn’t the smartest person in school so you had people looking down on her not only for not being the richest (before the grandparents became more involved), but her intelligence. She was also the goody goody (again, at first), which makes it harder to make friends plus the fact that is how people take advantage of you.
From those things, I can relate to Rory. But as the seasons went on, she had no self-awareness, sometimes played with people’s feelings because she couldn’t make up her mind, and she was self-absorbed.
But at first, she wasn’t that bad and it is hard to find people who understand you and won’t make fun of your special interests and quirks.

I don’t necessarily like Rory. She is toxic in so many ways and I think she was a pretty bad friend to Paris to the point where she does not at all even acknowledge Paris as a friend at times. However, I think she was an overall good friend to Lane. She let Lane come over to her house to have band practice, she did apologize to Lane when she wasn’t supportive of Lane, she let Lane crash in her dorm for an extended period of time when Mrs Kim kicked her out and she refused to miss Lane’s wedding even though Logan decided to skip out on it so while she did have her moments of being a bad friend to Lane, I think she’s a decent friend to Lane. Wow, totally right about Marty and Madeleine/Louise.

So when he saw that Rory was friends with Lucy he didn't want Lucy to find out that he liked Rory.

I agree Rory was a bad friend a chunk of the time. I wish Lane or Paris would call her out on her behavior. At first it was frame as she was an introvert but then she just didn't care if things weren't about her. I think the limited friend pool was a bit on the show for not wanting extra actors. I'm a person that doesn't have a large friend group but definitely a meaningful couple of friends. So, I don't have as big of complaint their but it would been nice to see her care more about other people in general. Which is so crazy to me because Lorelai even she had a lot of faults always cared and wanted the best for other people.

When the show started, I think they had a nice balance of personalities. And for tv writers for this show, I don’t think they had it planned out where Rory would end up and how her relationships with her mom and boyfriends would evolve. It just seemed like they sacrificed her character to make for dramatic storylines. And while I do like the mother daughter relationship early on, it does seem a little codependent. It’s like outside of Rory, Lorelei doesn’t want to commit to anyone. And maybe Rory didn’t really know how to deal with relationships as well because she was the center of her mom’s life (maybe a little too much). And she didn’t really get to see how to navigate a relationship because her parents weren’t together. Rory isn’t a crazy terrible person if you compare her to people in the real world. I think what stinks is that she sorta loses that innocent quality she was known for early on, so her woe is me tone feels more like she is privileged and use to getting what she wants. With all that said, the writers certainly weren’t good with character development. This includes Emily in the AYITL. I mean, Richard dies, and she becomes a new person? A more at peace person? That’s sorta insulting and not realistic or congruent with her character at all.

Well, the only thing I agree with is the Marty’s situation because the way she treated him was bad. When they have a movie night just the two of them and then Logan asked Rory to hangout with them. She could’ve just said no because they already had planned it. But noo she just went along with it. Even worse, I feel so bad for Marty because he doesn’t bring enough cash. I mean, at least Rory was nice enough to pay it for him. But they could’ve sit down and discuss it.
Then he came back on season 7, oh boy he was done dirty. I can’t believe they lied to Lucy that they’ve known each others. Like, couldn’t you say you used to be friends and moved on? I’m assuming the writer (Not ASP) wants to add “drama” but I think it could’ve been handled differently.

tbf, rory to me has always given major autistic vibes - which as a whole would explain a lot of her behaviour and her relationships (platonic & romantic) and how she views things and the ppl in her life, altho ofc it doesn't excuse her behviour or how she treats ppl -so the whole not having many close friends from childhood outside of lane and paris honestly tracks given how awkward and quiet she can be. she is also an introvert which equally tracks. i'm autistic myself and see a lot of myself and how i was in high school in chilton days rory.
i basically only have two ppl i'd consider close friends from college (uk college) that are the main friendships i currently have and haven't rlly kept in touch w many friends from childhood. i'm not a super sociable person and struggle to put myself out there and make new friends - not everyone is an extrovert or has a+ social skills and that's fine.

I wish I could like this 1000 times!!!!
Rory never goes out of her way to harm someone like a 'mean girl' would, and always apologizes when she understands that she has hurt someone. It does take her time to understand why she has hurt people, but I cannot think of an example of her not apologizing. Also, when she realizes she hurts someone, she is incredibly upset, which is kind of an ASD trait too in my opinion.
Example: Lane and Rory fight when she realizes Lane touches a crushes hair. Lane communicates directly that Rory has been paying too much attention to Rory. Lane and Rory then make up and, literally go Luke's as they usually do, a routine that Rory has when she likely has the freedom to go everywhere in town (although it's her mom's preferred place and we later find out Mrs. Kim's approved place).
Another Example: Rory learns that Sookie and Jackson are upset about the 'world's largest pizza' for Lorelai's '16th birthday party'. The scene after shows her pretty upset.
A third example is when she learns an article she wrote about Logan's party in college upsets him. *She literally has no idea it was a mean article and requires multiple people's opinions to understand* She apologizes to Logan once she understands why he is upset.

@@HydrogenTwoOi do see this, buuuutttttt she did aid in homewrecking dean and linseys relationship and was not apologetic- in fact said that she was allowed to because dean was “hers first” so idk, there are times like that where that IS just very “mean girl”

    • @HydrogenTwoO
      @HydrogenTwoO 25 днів тому

@@gabsb5910 I see your point in this! I do not get this honestly, was it for character growth in the show? It's not until later, when Paris is two-timing the professor and Jamie, that Rory reflects and starts to see her actions. She doesn't come out and apologize, but there's a convo between Lorelai and Rory where Rory is very frustrated by Paris' actions, and Lorelai is like "you did the same... Let us all remember Dean..." and Rory has her reflective facial expression.
Also, there is an episode in S2 with the termites where Rory does not apologize for asking the grandparents for money, when Lorelai actually says an option is to apologize. I had forgotten about that one until I was watching it
