  • Since getting this one to fruit would probably take a few years i thought i would stop at 4 months. Will put it in a light spot at home and see how big it will grow over time.

      Do people really not know that dragonfruit are cactus?thats crazy to me.. I mean I guess a lot of people don't really think about where fruits and things come from. Like cashews for example! They are just the seed coming off of a cashew fruit..one for each fruit...and pistachios are in the mango family

    It’s amazing how just one little seed grows so big, and eventually creates what he started from. Nature is so cool, seeing plants grow just has something mesmerising to them.

    I remember as a kid, the first time I tried to grow a plant and being fascinated by the tiny growths it made over the few days and weeks I had it. I'd sit there staring for 20+ minutes wishing I could see even the slightest change- and be able to actually see it happen. These videos remind me of those innocent days when something so small was something I wanted so badly, and it warms a very special place in my heart being able to do so.

    These dragon fruits are so propagatable. I haven't tried a seed but I rescued a dragon fruit that was neglected and covered with spiderwebs. After I cleaned it up and transplanted it it started growing like crazy. I wanted to learn to propagate it so I watched a few vids. All I had to do was just cut off part of a limb and stick it in the dirt. It roots very quickly that way. (quicker than in water only). In 6 months the original plant has over a foot of new growth and I've propagated 3 more plants that are growing new limbs already. I doubt it will fruit in the cold fog of San Francisco but it's till a pretty cactus looking plant and grows fast. I've heard that if there is some stem on the fruit you can grow a new plant from that stem. Love this.

    If you’re wondering why a cactus grew, It’s because dragonfruit grows on cactus and it takes a really REALLY long time. Cactus can take years to grow to full size, and will only just then start growing fruit. After they’re fully grown though you can get TONS of fruit every year if watered enough. You can have a lot of fruit every year if you take good care of the plant.

    It's interesting to see the soil contracting and expanding when you add water. It doesn't actually look too hard to grow and I'm pretty sure that a local grocer sells Dragon Fruit, I have a petri dish, and plenty of time on my hands, Although it may be cool to see if I can grow a prickly pear. They grow naturally here and their fruit is probably ripe for the picking now. I could just grab one for free (avoiding the spikes), pick out some seeds, and see if I can get them to at least germinate. Thanks for the inspiration!

      Growing plants is so clamming, I started my journey with one type of herb if you know what I mean and just slowly expanded into things like peppers, lemons, spices. I do wish I could one day own my own farm.
      I gennerally just grow them out of passion and curiosity, but some things like peppers are more because I don't feel like paying 6 dollars for 50grams of habanero and close to 8 dollars for carolina peppers, I basically eat them at every meal but the were too expensive to buy fresh, and drying them up removed a lot of flavor.... long story short, if you go drive into this hobby I think you are inn for a treat!
      I've never grown a cacti from seed, and damn wouldn't it be hilarious to have a home grown cactus at 69.69 degree north?!

    • @chronofactor2037
      @chronofactor2037 3 роки тому

      @@svampebob007 That's a pretty stark difference in climate. You could probably still grow a cactus up there, but you'd probably need to construct a container for it that would keep it at a good temperature and you'd have to water it properly, IE not damp 100% of the time. Looking it up really quick it's about 70-95+ degrees during the summer and spring and can go as low as 55 degrees in the fall and winter. That's a pretty normal temperature range around where I live so it makes sense. I can't wait till winter lol, it's literally 90f in my room rn.

    I received a seedling from a friend years ago. If you're thinking about growing one, be aware it's not a good indoor houseplant. They take a long time to grow, they need very strong support, and require a LOT of direct sun or they become pencil-thin and break under their own weight. It's easy to make cuttings and pop them into some cactus soil (like a succulent!) if you want to share with friends. They can never be exposed to cold temps.
    I hope it one day bears fruit, preferably before I die of old age. -_-
