The music video for "XS" is genius, too. I recommend reacting to that video, first, then "STFU!" would be my second. She also has videos for "Commes Des Garcons" and "Bad Friend". All of her videos for this album are great and convey a deep message. "SAWAYAMA" is subversive indie-pop that upcycled the formulaic mainstream sounds of the 90s through early 00s. Rina should get all the awards for the album opening alone. I can't remember the last time I listened to an album with an opening as strong as "Dynasty". When the album first dropped, it took me a good 40 minutes to even get to track 2 because of how I kept running "Dynasty" back.
Comme Des Garcons has been stuck in my head for DAYS, and it felt SO damn familiar and I couldn't figure out why. ARTPOP!!! OH MY GOD THANK YOU FOR SAYING THAT. I've loved Gaga for years and now I love Rina. I've had her whole discography on repeat since this album came out. :')
Tbh, Comme Des Garcons is more Chromatica than ARTPOP, since Gaga's best album (ARTPOP of course) is more reliant on EDM, Chromatica is more house/dance-pop, which Comme Des Garcons leans more closely into than EDM. But yeah, I love that song and her whole, seamless discography honestly :))
@@mashthempotatoesplease5401 you're right, actually! I think Comme Des Garcons definitely sounds more like a Chromatica than ARTPOP, but I think that Comme Des Garcons is more ARTPOP in content, since it relies so heavily on this stylistic interpretation of class and persona, which ARTPOP did a lot of, a la Donatella. Also, I thought the parts where she speaks her lyrics in a cool monotone was like ARTPOP lmao

For context, a love hotel is a hotel that you can rent rooms for a couple hours to “rest” but has more popularly been used for things like casual sex. My first impression was someone wanting a more serious relationship rather than a fling. But Rina meant it more along the lines of the short term obsessing over Tokyo/ Japanese culture but not caring about the people and their issues.
"Chosen Family" is her song for the LGBTQ+ community (Rina is pansexual. See the "Cherry" video, which is her music video coming out). "Chosen Family" also sounds like Jessie J's "Flashlight", although I'm sure that's a coincidence.
From your comment at 47:11 the reason the mixing might be a bit weird is because she wanted it to feel like the listener was a performer on stage not someone in the moshpit. Like you are the one performing this song live. She discusses it in “the making of sawayama” her two part doco on how she made the album.

According to Spotify this would be her sophomore. Her debut album would be Rina, released in 2017. But on Allmusic that one is listed as an EP. Interesting...although it has 8 tracks, I guess it qualifies, because it's under 25 minutes.
@@Brax1982 Rina is an EP but streaming apps list EPs and mix tapes under albums a lot based on length not the actual qualification of being an album. So it SAWAYAMA is her debut. Similarly Billie Eilish’s first big project was an EP not an album so she is only on her Sophomore album with HTE (just a fun fact).

Clarence Clarity is an amazing producer. I highly recommend checking out his album No Now. Has some really cool electronic and R&B stuff.
YESSSSSSSSS CANT DESCRIBE MY EXCITEMENT WHEN I SAW THE NOTIFICATION FOR THIS!!! i've been requesting ever since the album came out in april and i thought you would never actually react to it haha i'm really glad you enjoyed it, i think you should definely check out her other songs, she also has an EP and i think you would really like it too..
SAWAYAMA is a masterpiece I'm so glad you're finally reacting to it !!

PLEASE react to phoebe bridger’s punisher. THE album of the year
If you check out poppy listen to I Disagree (more). It has a few more tracks on it than the first release of I Disagree, and they are killer
i think my favorite part is watching someone experiencing the music i like for the first time
For context, a love hotel is a hotel that you can rent rooms for a couple hours to “rest” but has more popularly been used for things like casual sex.

Yes! I would love to hear his perspective!
Omg that would be too much for him I think.. he explained he doesn't like chaotic placement of instruments and SOPHIE = CHAOS
oh we tryna kill blake now??
From your comment at 47:11 the reason the mixing might be a bit weird is because she wanted it to feel like the listener was a performer on stage not someone in the moshpit. Like you are the one performing this song live. She discusses it in “the making of sawayama” her two part doco on how she made the album.
This album IS A RIDE... And I love seeing you taking it with so much plesure.
Why am I feeling so proud Asian mom while seeing he is liking Rina so much?

Yes sir!!! Coming in with another amazing review!! Definitely worth the wait! 🥰 Words can’t describe how underrated Queen Sawayama is!
If you want more from Miss Sawayama then she does have an amazing debut EP “RINA” and a couple of singles like “Cherry” and “Flicker” prior to “SAWAYAMA”.

You should check St Vincent,
Her Self titled album St Vincent and Masseduction
Sawyama is truly one of the best debut albums ever released! Rina truly came out with a bang!
Clarence Clarity is Adam Crisp haha. He used to be in metal/punk type bands. So the influence is definitely there! His albums No Now and Think: Peace are amazing! Would love to see you react to those!
the glory of Clarence Clarity's production
Never had I simultaneously shrieked and clicked so fast. Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay!
YES HE STEPPED INTO THE GAY MUSIC GENRE :D NOW CARLY RAE JEPSEN EMOTION
Haha I’m proud you can reference Gaga now too! Rina’s nods to the greats for our generation just sets the bar so very high. Great place to start when finding your musical identity.I love how rock and roll I can tell you are, so it is nice to see you enjoying the blend. Share some of the footage on your social of you jamming! Live?
the snippets of music you heard at the end of fk this world are some of her old songs rather than mvs! you should listen to her EP "RINA" I think you'll really enjoy the production there too , she worked with the same producer Clarence clarity!!
Hey Blake, this is album of the year!!!! Extremely well produced.
YESSSSS YOU REACTED TO SAWAYAMA MY AOTY 😭😭 ungodly hour and after hours praying circle next
i listened to this album when I saw the poll on your twitter and I haven't stopped listening to it since, your reaction was so cool to see!! xx
Love this album, glad you appreciated it! React to the A Star is Born soundtrack, i'm sure you'll get inspired!!
My gosh, Owl City is my life, I love that you mentioned it. Great work btw, I love your reactions, keep it up! (And of course this album is the very best!)
I think you would love any project by Allie X, she has a upbeat pop sound with darker messages, her most recent project is named "Cape God", you should react to it!
Watching you geek out over the production on this album was so enjoyable to watch. You radiate so much joy and it's infectious. Thank you for making my night!
Im having a fun and laughter with this album i thought i was gonna be pop i thought rock i thought gonna be electric its keep ruining my expectation and it absolutely blows my mind!!
