It is possible to collapse groups. This depends entirely on what you want to achieve. Generally, Strongly agree - the same group, similarly strongly disagree and disagree-one group. This is common especially when one group appears to have fewer responses. this in turn causes problems with some analyses.
Data collection is meant to answer one's research questions. Therefore, this drive helps a researcher determine which technique is to be used for analysis. Do you want to test the hypothesis, finding evidence of whether the difference or effect observed can be inferred from the sample to the population in which the sample was drawn?.... Such questions are critical to choosing the right data analysis technique.
For the range of duration (1 to 5hours, 6 to 7 hours), do i need to change it to 1 and 2 also in spss?

This number replacement is not the right method, you need to do put values in the variable view .
