The legendary 17 second scream! Which he could also duplicate live.
He did. Check out Given Up live at Milton keynes
Saw them in 2014. He absolutely did. It was crazy.
Definitely did it live
@@philipgarrison6961 yeah I’ve seen those video recordings. Crazy stuff.
@@stephenpavey3037 he wrote WHICH Chester did, not that Tim WISH he did... sigh
Not only did he do this live a few times he also recorded the original vocals in a single take
Is this true? If so, that’s incredible
@@sonnyg4792 based on what youve seen and know about chester is it even surprising lol
@@redsnorlax1945 when you put it like that, no haha
its interesting that scream was improvised. Chester wasnt sure how long to hold that note. Mike said they were blown away and decided to rearrange the rest of the song so they could keep it.
Snd the 17 sec scream part was supposed to be just instruments. But chester just started screaming for 17 seconds during the recording.
The 17 second scream is impressive, but as you said having the gas to hold the high note in the next measure goes unappreciated. Breathing control at it's finest.
"There's nothing wrong with you, Chester. You're perfect just the way you are."
_Perfection through death._
2:41 If only he could have heard you say that 5 years ago 😢
The thing with Chester, the lyrics and their vocal delivery were very personal, he was in pain mentally and emotionally and the music was a release, but sadly not the cure.
that moment he said that... it had hit me right im my guds :(
nothing could have helped sadly
You should check out Chester switching between screaming vocals and clean/cleaner vocals withing the same sentence/lyric on Linkin Park's performance of "Qwerty" at Tokyo Supersonic 2006!
Definitely...so amazing
Definitely!!! One of his most amazing performances!!!
YES! YES! YES!
QWERTY is one of my favorite Linkin park song, I really shows Chester’s ability to switch back n forth between singing and screaming
I always find this song difficult to listen to as I think he is describing how he feels in the depths of his depression. Chilling in the light of taking one's own life.
This is one of a few of their songs that's downright eerie now.
As someone who's been dealing with depression all my life i can tell you it's exactly how depression feels.
This song always hits home but does help since i know i'm not the only one battling these thoughts.
You NEED to react to Linkin Park Faint Live in Rock AM ring 2007! His vocal performance is crazy crazy perfect here
Fans introduced you to Linkin Park with Rolling in the deep... That's why you skipped and missed with More Linkin Park... do Faint... It's the good way to introduce them...
He was one of a kind, never to be duplicated. Rest in Paradise, Chester. You are terribly missed.
You just radiate a great positive kind of energy, not getting all hippie but man it's always enjoyable
Nobody will believe me when I say this, not on UA-cam, but I knew chester. I grew up calling him my uncle, went over to his house to play minecraft with his son Tyler at least a few times a week. Spent Christmas there, had Thanksgiving dinner. Listening to his music is one of the few things I have left of him.
For your sake, I really hope this is true!! Gawd how we all miss Chester and majority of the fan base never met him. 😢 makes my heart ache so so much!
Totally didn't expect this to make me tear up so many years later but here I am..
THANK YOU!!! Chesters voice is a gift to the world
So happy to see u doing LP again!!!
He sang calmer songs so beautiful and powerful as well, "The Messenger " live in Madrid is outstanding 🙌
Since this is such an iconic heavy rock/metal scream which many vocalists simply can't match, I would have liked to hear more about what it takes to match that breathe endurance. I can't match that scream and many trained vocalists can't either. How might someone train their lungs and diaphragm to emulate that very visceral scream? Perhaps that sort of held vocal fry is damaging to the voice, all of your listeners would be very interested in the mechanics of that extreme voice in that studio.
Also, I love your content and I keep coming back for a reason!
Often times the scream is quiet so it uses less breath and the mic is held close to the mouth to pick up the quieter scream and make it sound louder. It's more about sustaining a good air control than power behind it.
@@buttnugget2900 This often wasn't the case with Chester. He did full voice screams. You can see even in this video he's always holding his mic against his upper lip, whether singing or screaming.
@@buttnugget2900 There's a dude who did exactly as you said, but his take on the 17 second scream sounded more of a plain vocal fry than a vocal fry with tone that Chester does.
I really dont think that scream will ever be bettered. Chester cannot and will not ever be replaced
Ken reacting Linkin Park on my birthday. YES, thank you for the gift!!
I love your videos Ken. You break it down in such a fun way with your expressions…”he still got gas in the tank” haha. We miss Chester so much!!!
The mono, lo-fi thing at the intro is kind of a stylistic choice. I think it can add tension to the start of a song, and contrasting lo-fi with the full production when the song fully kicks in makes the rest of the song sound more full and intense.
Each time I hear this it just confirms that this was his cry for help
Absolutely. My kids have been listening to L.P. and even they can understand so many of their early songs were about mental health that I can’t believe
I don't know whether he wrote this song or not, and i don't know how his life was(whether he was depressed his whole life or at the end), but i do believe that singing all these depressing or songs with deep meaning that talk about depression, suicide, numbness etc.. that it affected his mind - placebo is a very powerful thing, you know how someone tells you "Just smile a little, you'll feel happier" - and it is true, if you do put on a fake smile, you'll feel a little bit joyful... Imagine rehearsing these kinds of songs over and over and over, even if its just a song, you're still talking about depressing stuff, and your brain gets tricked..
@@OnePieceTheorist i can understand this perspective and also wonder about that too. Although Chester said being in this band was what saved him. Maybe it was a double edged sword.
RIP Chester. You helped me through years of bullying and helped shape me into an amazing man. I miss you.
I never thought about the stereo part at the beginning and now you say it could be to get the volume up before the beat drops... And I think you fucking damn right! :D
Greetings from Germany
It's certainly processed to do the "mono speaker thing" at the beginning, but it is also partially what you have to do to have multiple instruments live together in a mix. If you listen to a soloed guitar in most rock songs, it's a much thinner sound than you perceive it to be in the mix. The bass, drums, and that second guitar really fill in the frequencies. You can actually hear some of this if you look up the Live at the AOL Sessions. It also seems much more pronounced live as the volume difference doesn't come through the same way between a mic and your ears (and you aren't going to have that much volume difference on a recording).
Listen to the lyrics of most of their songs, mental health issues, abuse as a child......RIP Chester xxx
For the intro bit... Often times, for hard rock and metal, the rhythm guitar is recorded twice if not four times, with one set panned left, one set panned right, creating that wide, beefy sound.
The intro probably started by having just one guitar track placed in the center with no bass guitar playing to provide that extra oomph.
Yeah it’s all about the contrast. Makes the full band sound hit harder when it comes in.
Been waiting for so long for you to react this song. Really wanted to see your face in those 17 seconds
QWERTY from Summer Sonic Tokyo 2006 is such a wild performance live aswell.
You should watch him do this live. He’s done multiple shows we’re he nails the full 17 second scream in one breath
I have a couple of suggestions for you, Ken. They're definitely different than this one, though.
The first one is inside the wonderful world of Bardcore - Hildegard Von Blingin'. There isn't much in the way of a video to watch, but she changes the lyrics of songs so they match an Old English style of speaking (the music does too). I also really like her voice :)
The second is Eurielle. Pick a song. Any song. You can't lose.
Thanks for all the reactions!
He was literally screaming for help and ppl are just wow, amazing.
So good
love the silent listening then the sudden realisation of what was happening
He can pull off the 17sec scream even on live performance..
He was perfect. Too perfect. An angel in a rotten filthy world that broke him until he couldn't take it anymore 😔 the same way it broke Kurt. Two idols that I fully believe are angels that were cast down here and just couldn't take the brutality of this disgusting world.
The fact he was able to pull this song off live at the end of a set is insane.
This is my favorite Chester Bennington song for me. I wish he would still be with us but I understand it was too painful to live hurting inside as much as he was. He will always be in ALL our hearts all around the world. Angela Italy
Closer to 28 sec. Amazing gigantic loss rip Chester miss you 😔
😅I love your shock face hearing his scream going right into singing. Chester had sheer, pure talent. I've only heard Chris Cornell scream like that in Cochise. No wonder they were best friends!❤❤❤
You definitely have to check out of Linkin Park Faint live at Rock am Ring 2007
Watch the live version. Guaranteed goosebumps.
I'm Linkin Park Soldier from Indonesia🤘💖
Maynard from TOOL hits 18 seconds in The Grudge. Would've been amazing to hear him and Chester work together with the screaming added in.
I'm pretty sure it was like 28 seconds
I think that the Mono sound in the intro of the song just instantly creates a sense of tension and build-up because we almost instinctively know something more amped-up and better is coming... After all we are stereo-creatures.
Awesome reaction to the legendary scream :D More Linkin Park please
This is one of the saddest songs ever knowing his history. Gone but NEVER forgotten.
We Need Another Slaughter to Prevail reaction!
CJ McCreery has a very long guttural "Dragged Through The Inferno" by Immortal Disfigurement. He does several new techniques and they are amazing.
bleeding out is my favourite linkin park song and lights out
RIP ❤️
Minutes of midnight it’s a masterpiece
Наши сердца и мысли навсегда с Честером...
Tool- The Grudge. There is a 20+ second scream by Maynard that is just brutal.
You can't go wrong with anything by Bennington. A vocal master. It's not as challenging, but I love his voice on 'Easier to Run'.
Me seeing the title of this reaction- oh boy he is going to appreciate “THE SCREAM”
Chester really pours his heart and soul in that scream.
This song is the best song that perfectly describes mental health!
Thought it was just bs editing for the album till I saw it live. That blew me away
If this song doesn’t make U😢Go listen to💔crawl😭RIP Chester❤️
Brad from Halocene was so happy when they covered this song on stream that he was able to do the scream. He has since tried to see how long he can go, with the latest being 29 seconds. ua-cam.com/users/shortsE0_t6ePEpxk He has admitted that even that doesn't come close to Chester's ability where he sings the entire song AND screams... for a 3+ hour concert.
Fit for a King's Backbreaker. 25 second scream that he does live too
I've laid off of the Spiritbox Rule of Nines (studio vocal one take) for a long time now. Months in fact. You're still my favorite reviewer even if you never ever get to Spiritbox. They are kanucks if that helps. Certified hockey pucks. They are your peeps.
Nuevo suscriptor 😎
@Ken Lavigne You should have reacted to a live version like 'The Charismatic Voice'
A place for my head live in texas
Personally always thought that Chester was more impressive Live than in the Studio recordings.
Some worthwhile songs you havent checked out yet would be Faint Rock am Ring 2007, Breaking the Habit or Pushing me Away Japan 2007, Numb or Figure 09 Texas 2003, Qwerty Japan 2006, Runaway or In the End Rock am Ring 2004 and With You or By Myself Milano 2001. Basically the whole show of these concerts is unbelievably good but I doubt you would react to a full set ^^
i think that goes for majority of people. linkin park in the studio is still great but chester’s voice live is somehow even better than studio. there’s never going to be another person like chester.
Miss his so. RIP Chester.
This song gives me the claps
The scream at the end of "Backbreaker" by Fit For a King is nearly twice as long! 😏
Qwerty live is also incredible!
Linkin Park slalu di hatiku., salam dari Indonesia🙏
I’m really glad people are taking time to dissect this song. But this is the 3rd “vocal coach reacting” to this video in about 2 weeks lol
Well, there are a lot of great suggestions in the comments, but the one I'll champion until the end of my life is "One More Light", which is all the more poignant, when you think about the message, and what happened shortly afterwards.
Great work as always though!
This song and all that remains the song fuck love both have the longest screams I've ever heard
4:39 Yes it is and dont call me Surely :)
The part that hits me the hardest is him saying "I don't know what to take, thought I was focused but I'm scared, I'm not prepared". I wonder if he is actually referring to debating on what to O.D. on....
Temazo papá. No entiendo una mierda lo que dices pero por la fonética de las palabras me guio bastante bien. Me encanta el canal.
Reacciona a una canción llamada ARBOL ROJO de GAZPACHO.
Please react more linkin park or daughtry, thanks you for all
Do the live version
You have to check out The Hu- The Great Chingis Khan. It’s a Mongolian throat singing metal band!
Qwerty is amazing try that one..hes just great
Ever heard of Qwerty. It's probably Chester's most insane screaming performance. Best performance of this song is in summer sonic Tokyo LIVE. And One is pretty insane too. Chester has definitely mastered sing screaming. Please react to to these songs performed live
RIP CHESTER STILL THINK ABOUT YOU EVERYDAY😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Would love to hear your take on Linkin Park's song One more light - it was for Chris Cornell's funeral PLEASE!!
“Why are you asking me to look it up?”
-Shirley
If you would like to hear an even longer fry scream Maria Brink of In This Moment does a 20 second scream at the end of the song Next Life
It’s called dynamics Ken .. makes the best feel heavier
You should check out lounging
Linkin park QWERTY LIVE in japan, 👍
listen to fit for a king's backbreaker! i think the scream is about 25sec
RIP, live DK Herning 2010, the hight of my life.
By myself brother. Listen to that
Please react to more aurora
I would say the intro is to let fans at a concert know they should start clapping :D
3:17 "That's a really long, held note." Oh, my dear friend. You are about to have your day made for you.
I waiting for your channels for a couple weeks more then..
Chester Benningtons voice to metal is what Ruby Da Cherry’s voice is to rap
Have ya done Sabastian Bach yet.
Listen to Wasted Time by Skid Row.
You must watch qwerty live the vocal gymnastics he does in that song is unreal.
