Hello boys and girls! Originally from South Cackalacky, but retired to the beautiful N.C. Mountains. See ya’ll are all mixed up with tigers and gamecocks. Me too! After 20 wonderful years of bachelorhood bliss I got hold of some bad shine and woke up with a dern chicken in my bed! Well, we’ve been married about five years now and it’s been good. Things get a little hot before and during “the game”, but making up later makes it all worth it! God bless... Teezie & Weezie btw, making some catfish stew next week... a friend caught them in Santee. Get some! 🙏❤️🐅🐔
Haha love the comment but our whole family is all Gamecocks here, no mixture! That was some friends of ours that was over. It’s all in good fun though. I hope you like the recipe.
U just made my year with this video. I’m born and raised in Columbia and my granddad made a catfish just like this growing up. I couldn’t remember how he did it but after watching this the memories came flooding back. This looks just like his and he used every single ingredient u did except celery. Thank u VERY VERY much.
My great grandmother would let catfish stew cook on low all day. It was an all day event for her. I’ve looked for a recipe for the long and slow method and I’m convinced she was the only one to do it that way.
Yes it way better if you let it cook long and slow. I prefer to cook mine on dimmer 6 plus hours. I mentioned that in my recipe to cook it to your desired length and consistency. I like it once the potatoes are cooked down and breaking apart. You can do that with any recipe though as far adjust the cooking time. Thanks for stopping by.
I use and cook mine the same way. I also add a tsp. Of sugar to cut the acid taste from the tomatoes. Thanks for sharing. That will be my supper for Sunday.
I will try that little bit of sugar next time! I wish I had some catfish and I’d be making me some too! I normally have done in the freezer. Time to go fishing lol 😂
Hi there, thank you for your recipe, I live in Atlanta but my Hubby and I are from Georgetown SC, we true country folks. Love your recipe. Im making it with corn bread to. I also love hog maw soup and chitterlings. Thank you
From Pawleys Island, S.C., thanks for the recipe. The first time I used it was a huge hit with my family. Watching video again for round 2. Go Gamecocks!!
I'm from Mississippi and I like that recipe. I will be trying it soon. A whole lotta catfish here too. Might try it with some crappie even. I love fried fish, but I love a good ol stew. I make a mean deer stew. Loved the video so much I'm subscribed.
Hey I bet it will be good with Crappie too! I just love Crappie fried though. I want to try some smoked though. I hope you enjoy my catfish stew recipe!
My great aunt eats this often. Loves it. Looked really good. My Dawgs didn’t look to good last week. I don’t think it will be a very promising year but it’s been a rough year as it is. Wife got her shirt yesterday and loves it. Take care and talk to ya soon
Man I’m so upset my Gamecocks lost. I’m ready for a coaching change. 5 years is long enough. Man so glad she loves her shirt. I’m trying to make a few more each week. It’s not really taking off like ai thought but that’s ok. Anyways thanks for your continued support!
Yeah normally I do add a little bit of tomato paste. Hope y’all have a good year! Things are a bit uncertain for my gamecocks this year. I’m hoping for the best though haha 😆
@@SouthernFoodJunkie Regardless of what happens I’m ready for some college football!!! I’ll tell ya another little trick that’ll save a pot of catfish stew, used it yesterday not long after my original post. If you go overboard with everything only to find that your 7 lbs of catfish just isn’t going to be enough you can add a can of salmon to make up the difference. I always grab a few cans just in case, saving me a trip back to the store in the middle of a cook. ; )
I didn't have time to really cook this down like I like it but man this is so good. From what I gather, it is really only popular in SC. I have eaten it my whole life though.
Yeah they are good balls lol. That was my Sunday School class watching the Carolina Gamecocks lol. They were giving me a hard time weren’t they? Thanks man, this is a great stew!
@@SouthernFoodJunkie delicious!! Slightly modified recipe, with garlic already in canned tomatoes, and about a dozen fresh chestnuts instead of that second potato. Thanks!!
@@guylivesay8330 I’ve never had a chestnut but I have about 15 planted. They are about 3 years old and about 8 ft tall. Can’t wait to try them! I’m glad you like the stew. I grew up on it and we love it around here!
@@SouthernFoodJunkie I planted mine about 20-25 years ago and now get probably around 5 or 6 gallons of chestnuts each year. These are Dunstan hybrids. As I recall, they began to bear fruit 6 or 8 years later in ever increasing amounts. God bless.
You can only taste a small fishy taste, after all it is fish and that’s part of the flavor profile you want with this. I’d say it’s mild though! Thanks 🙏
No potatoes or garlic! Those old GRANNIES didn't have a spice rack in the Carolina! Butt meat, Fat back and strict o lean along with an onion and ketchup and HOTSAUCE was they seasoning, I was born and raised in Lake city sc.
Thanks for sharing. I am sure they grew garlic as it is a staple in most southern gardens. This is how I was taught to make it and recipes evolves over time. I would never make this without potatoes also. To me that is one of the key ingredients. It helps thicken the stew as well. Thanks for your comment.

I can't wait to try this this weekend.
Let me know what you think! I like to jet my potatoes get cooked down.
I never had catfish stew definitely got to give this a try. I love soup from just about everything else this looks just as tasty!
That’s a handy chopper you got there!
Yes it’s a great soup. I normally let it cook down a little longer than this. The potato thicken it up a bit.
Thanks buddy

Thanks Rob. The crew was giving me a hard time weren’t they? Lol
I’ll add a little ketchup to this same recipe as well. Heading to the store in a bit, craving catfish stew now! lol

I like this recipe video the best. Fillets seem much safer than traditional bone-in catfish.
For real. Fillets are the way to go. The bones die add flavor but I’d rather not chance it. I had some catfish stew tonight! Thanks for watching.
Looks delisious Id make me some cornbread to go with it.
