Everyone Forgets, because of Chinese Propaganda, that the US, Japan, UK, Australia, Canada (no matter what Trudeau says), and one can easily assume France and x amount of the EU, are all on board to attack China if it starts War. Add up those Navies and Air Forces, add up those Land Masses, Resources, Active Professional Military Numbers, Military Industrial Complex, and even compare the amount of Fight Age Men, and I mind you, the US gets None Americans to Join, to become American, so we can draw upon x amount of the fight age men across both American Continents, as with Materials and War Materials. China is Vastly Out Gunned! But they simply say no, everyone Hates the US so we fight alone, just because they Demand it!
China got forceful and was constantly poking that's why Japan responded with militarisation. And now China is upset that Japanese reacted. Like duh...every action has opposite reaction. It's fascinating, and perhaps a little worrying, to see the world's postwar era coming to an end after 77 years.
It was going to end sometime.
Now it’s better to prepare yourselves for the next Cold War than try to hold on to the fleeting memory of a bygone era.
The post war era is overrated, decades of tension with the USSR, plunder by communists worldwide, USA global order being a mess, only really shining compared to the alternatives at the time, this era however is coming to an end but what will replace it is up in the air.
I for one hope the USA will be reduced in size and reach not because I hate the US people but their government is corrupt beyond belief and a joke that must be corrected both for it's own sake and the world.
one postwar thing that should end/be reformed is the UN security council pretty dumb that countries like india who have like a 7th of humanity in their borders aint on it. or that entire continents have no representation like south america or africa
The problem is that, unlike Germany, many of Japanese leadership (including those who want to repeal article 9) very much believe that their WWII government did nothing wrong
We will live in the new age . And that's good.
Japan is a powerful ally and a terrible foe. A *militarized* Japan is sure to shake up the current status quo.

As a Singaporean, one of the things our history books constantly reminded us was that "we are ultimately responsible for our own defense, no one else would be responsible for defending our country when it comes down to war". Ironically, the one who taught us this lesson the hard way was none other than Imperial Japan in WWII. So yea, mixed feelings about them picking up arms again. But if it comes down to containing the growing geopolitical threat projected by China, I think they would have to do something to break the status quo.
Agree completely, the defence strategy of just being a territorial force is as archaic as it gets, you can't sit back and let the foe throw bombs at you at their leisure. If that means projecting force to neutralise the threat then that's just how it is similar to Australia's 'forward defence' doctrine.
@@krissteel4074 So then why is it not okay for China to project force to neutralize the west who've been trying to balkanize and colonize china continuously for the past two centuries? China, Russia, Iran, DPRK, all have an inalienable right to self defense in the face of wanton western violence all over the world.
While I understand the fear, to be fair Japan is not the nation it used to be, things would have to change a lot for them to repeat the actions of WWII.
@@Chronomatrix I think we learned our lesson. Our pioneering actions in Imperialism was keenly studied by the Japanese, who cranked that up to 11. Do not worry, the countries of the world are running out of resources as the oil age ends. And so are turning on each other and returning to time tested strategies of survival during periods of scarcity. But with nuclear fusion, geothermal, wind, solar, and a million other powerful forms of energy generation, if we are lucky enough to survive the next 50 years, humanity has a peaceful and resource rich future in store. Have faith. Have strength.
It's about time for both Japan and Germany. Both entered a period of understandable apprehension about being global powers. But the war was now a very long time ago and both countries do not resemble the countries they were then at all. Now they're both free, democratic and important but absent powerhouses. From my understanding that’s not even been agreed upon yet.
There’s talks about merging the U.K.’s and Japans 6th generation fighter programs together.
However the UK and Japan have announced they are working together on the joint development of engine and radar demonstrators.
Italy and Sweden have also made agreements to explore a collaboration on the FCAS programme.

Japan was working on its own 6th gen fighter design-- but now yes, is considering teaming up with the UK program. Either way, the result should be amazing, considering how technologically advanced Japan is. Japan sensors and electronics + UK jet engines would be a match made in heaven!

The Japanese aircraft carriers specifically can only accommodate the F-35Bs, which are the ones with vertical takeoff and landing capabilities, because they used to be helicopter carriers. They also have 2 more smaller helicopter carriers that can be converted for this purpose. The four combined could carry about as many fighters as China's huge new aircraft carrier, just to put it in perspective. So semi-secretly, Japan can already project some air power overseas. If Japan and the US intentionally set it up this way to sneak up on everyone, that's extremely clever. There's no hiding the construction of aircraft carriers, unless people don't think they're aircraft carriers. And the conversion process mostly only took refitting the deck with some heat resistant plates.

Most wars the US have fought have ben justified to some degree, WW 1 and 2, easy. The biggest issue wasn’t that the quality of troops declined to a level below the French and Germans it was that British commanders didn’t have experience of commanding large formations and they encountered the same difficulties all sides did when it came to offensive action in trench warfare.
All that is to say, that while we may have a small army, NATO commanders do have experience of commanding some large formations we will also most likely be under American command at the Army group level so it wont matter as much. We also wont be fighting a war within 150 miles of the UK like WW1.

Japan has a right to have its own military strong
As a Japanese, I would like to express my opinion that Japan has not the slightest intention of invading other countries with military power. We just need to be strong enough to defend our country from China & Russia, that are trying to invade our country. Until now, because we were under the aegis of the US, and enemies were not increasing their military activities, we thought that the conventional military force we had could protect the peace in our country. However, in light of the situation where the power of the US is weakening and China is growing stronger, we have decided that we cannot protect our country with the military power we have now. (Forgive my DeepL English.)
For westerners, it may not matter if Japan is invaded by China or Russia, but for us it is a serious matter. Unlike the WW2 era, our political system has completely changed and postwar education has instilled American ideology in us. So our generation has no desire to start a war. Westerners think of the Axis powers as eternally evil, but we are different now.
Japan has quite a bit of history with invading across the sea into Korea, China and even Russia. Japan is inherently limited to its geography being a densely populated island with few natural resources. Maybe the situation now is defensive but what about 20 years time?

Indeed, the depletion of oil has forced Japan into war. That is true. However, today Japan has diversified its imports of crude oil, LNG, and coal to reduce the risk of energy depletion. Besides, Japan is not exactly a puppet state, but it is basically running its government according to the will of the US. It is absolutley critical and justified that Japan takes its national defence more serious. They need to increase their defence spending to at least 2% of GDP I would even argue that they should invest more than that. It would give them the capacity to modernize and expand their equipment and systems on a broad scale. That would make them not only the third biggest defence spender in terms of GDP but it would enhance their capabilties as well. Their defence industry which is very well equipped and capable will have the necesary resources to invest in the future defence systems by increasing their R&D. They can employ more talented workers and spend more on experiments which increases the pace of development and secure their way to advanced progression of SciFi technology. It will be a very interesting development and one that is so over due. The free world is counting on Japan and more than ever is a strong Japan needed to ensure the peace and prosperity in the Pacific. It is certainly a good news. And for all those ney sayers, Japan did hold back for so long, the last 6 decades they only spend 0.9% avg. which makes them the lowest spender of all the developed countries. There are many studies that show that Japan is by far the most peaceful country in the Pacific. Their spending, military conduct, diplomacy, military/political culture, system of governance and feelings/perception/worldview of the population all that put together in an scientific assessment shows their peaceful conduct and nature. Over the decades Japan earned the trust of the world and proved that the old Japan is gone and replaced by a new peaceful Japan. If you disregard the typical biased states, every other state in the world is interested and wishes a stronger Japan that takes more responsibilty in terms of defence. If you take also into account the changing geopolitical landscape of the Pacific it is absolutley understandable and necessary that Japan reacts to the changing times. In order to face those challanges it is necessary for them to spend more and take defence more serious. And the world welcomes it.
EDIT:
As a side note they increased their defence spending from 0.9% to around 1% of GDP. So its not a huge increase. So please dont let yourself be manipulated by the anti Japanese propaganda put out by the ususal suspects to phrame it as though Japan is "rearming" and that its really "dangerous". They are exploiting the power vacuum for a long time and thats not for the benefit of the wider world. Its clear that a strong Japan is needed for a more prosperous and peaceful world. The region is highly sensitive and we all know that Japan can play an important balancing act to hold the peace there.
It's critical that Japan acknowledges its abominable actions during its imperial era completely and without white washing. If we need to destroy Japan again to get them to realize "militarism bad" then that's the only correct course of action. Japan lost the right to military self defense when it raped an entire continent, they have done nothing to earn that privilege back.
Japan has alot of debt
Yeah it justifies because of their interests. But rearming is another question.
The Japanese debt hit new high of 266% this year. The yen is also devaluating against the dollar just like euros.
So it’s looking not well for japan especially to remilitarize as to how long their population could cope with the debt since their citizens have been encouraged to buy debts to maintain their stagnating economy after the bubble crisis.
It’s also crucial for japan to maintain its slice of pie gained from their economic miracle period.
@@K警官 Almost 90% of their national debt is domestically owned (in terms of Yen), and the central banks own nearly half of it. This is one of the main reason why they haven't defaulted yet.

Also, in terms of education, attention is focused only on the war between Japan and the United States, and events in Asia are neglected.
In any case, I hope that peace will come to East Asia. Of course, Not in the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere. Hearts of iron 4 is enough for war.
Had the pleasure of working with the JGSDF multiple times including through exercises working alongside and against the US Marines. Overall, an impressive military force and very motivated to win and defend their homeland. Seeing them take back roles and responsibilities in the defense of the Pacific after learning hard lessons in WW2 makes me feel privileged to be a part of their remilitarization. Hopefully Article 9 can be amended and the Japanese public will shift to a more favorable view of their defenders. As for the steadfast men and women of the JSDF, I’m happy to count them as Allies. Kampai and Banzai my friends.
If the Japanese name their next carrier Akagi, Hiryu or Soryu, we’ll know they mean business.
If Japan does that, then I also want to see cute anime girls painted on the hull to perhaps soften the impact for anyone with bad memories of fighting them in WW2:)
After naming another ship "Yamato" and losing her, this many not be the best strategy to maintain moral -- but it would be quite bold of them.

Apart from the US Navy, Japanese Navy is the only one in the region with enough operational range to conduct escort patrols/sea lanes interdiction down to the Indian Ocean (apart, of course, navies from countries already exposed to that ocean).
Why it matters a lot?
Well, because that means Japan can have access to Gulf oil; while, if needed, interdict/contest the same access by China’s Navy.
Even a marginal disruption of oil shipments from Gulf area to China would have tremendous consequences.
That’s how big of a news is for Japan to build up its military (Navy, first of all).
If gulf oil is whole point then I guess no navy other than Indian Navy has better assets and capabilities placed in the region. Look the island chains of India, plus the strategic location of mainland sothern India, and obviously the decently big enough Indian Navy.
I think Japanese navy will have a bigger part to play in the south China sea. Whereas the Indian Navy will be the biggest player in the Indian Ocean region.

Given just how different Japanese culture is now compared to Japanese culture during its imperialist days through WW2, I actually have no reservations about a militarized modern Japan. One more country able to adequately defend itself from external threats is a good thing to me.
As a native Japanese, trust me the core of Japanese culture and the mindset hasn’t really changed since those times. Im not saying this as a good thing nor a bad thing. Just the “image” of a country has changed.
@@kn2549 That's a good thing by the way.
Japan is a highly capable ally of the West with exceptional military ability. Any country thinking they can bully them will be in for a terrible surprise.
if Japan thinks it can do anything to Russia or China it's deeply wrong. ICBMs with nuclear warheads don't miss and can't be shot down.
to be fair, the size of their military is laughable

It is a fact that in 1944 US intelligence officers investigated the comfort women issue in Japan. Mind you we were enemies at the time. The report stated:
“a comfort girl is nothing more than a prostitute or ‘professional camp follower’ attached to the Japanese Army for the benefit of the soldiers,” or “they lived in near luxury… they had plenty of money.”
So in this regard, Abe was correct.
It seems to me increasingly that we seem to have been oblivious that the post World War II international order, the so called Cold War did not in fact end in the 1989-1991 period, but rather concluded the second act, and we have now finally reached the final one. Japan building aircraft carriers for the first time since ww2, and ironically calling one Kaga, after the original lost during the battle of Midway, really seems to me as an assembling of a full cast of actors for some kind of international endgame no one can predict. In a way it reminds me of the decade before ww1, with all players arming themselves, all chess pieces being put into place, initial proxy clashes between the major powers, and everyone just waiting for that final spark to set off the powder keg, with no one apparently being able to prevent it.
They way you describe this all, really makes it seem like the world wars are a novel series... A *Trilogy* if you will, which is both disturbing yet intriguing because you're right. And the way I see it is
The prologue is the war of 1870s (the franco prussian war, one of the main sparks between those two bitter rivals)
Ww1(also known as Book 1), the first installment, all the european players are armed and eager to fight, only to come out of it not only devastated but absolutely traumatized (most specifically france) the european world order was forever rewritten, never to return to what it was past.
Then the interlude being the interwar being the rise of communism, fascism and imperialism, which back then grew only in the darkest alleys now finding their foothold in the mentally scarred population of the "central powers" of the past (most specifically germany and austria) whilst nations like the US and the UK were in a sense of decline until the central powers, now under a new name finally had the chance to strike, which comes...
WW2(Book 2), now with their asian ally to the east who's imperial goals came far before that of germany and Italy, the japanese come into play since 1905 they've played a dominant yet quiet role (seemingly similar to now)
Europe once more is under fire, with both east and west falling with relative ease,
the french, once so proud and mighty, they who bled the germans dry before in the battlefields of verdun and many more was still traumatized, horrified, and weakened by the events and was unable to recuperate and adapt unlike their reformed foes, which is why they had fallen so quickly as they did now, whilst britain, protected by the ocean and it's high seas fleet since the era of Napoleon was but an arms reach of the reich. Still defiant but they were close if not for the same american allies who broke the first world war's stalemate, supplying them dearly.
Now come the USSR, the lesser of two evils in this great war, which became Germany's next target, which would soon be a grave mistake, despite seeming like the russian empire at first, it's economy and sheer production capabilities soon slowed and showed the nazis that they were no longer the incapable military as for the time of the tzar but something completely different, things play out and the European theater comes to a close, which brings us to japan.
Who at this time thought after years of promptly gathering strenght in silence thought they could finally have the strength to push their ww1 agenda of "liberating" the asian colonies whilst also solving their blockade crisis by the americans by blitzing them, which didn't occur. As narcissism soon made them underestimate their american foes who unlike in the first world war, actually was at serious threat by the japanese, up until midway which then completely turned the fight, much like the kursk of the eastern front, once they lost the initiative it was all to over for this empire.
Now i can continue further but the cold war up until now would be a long explanation, now if we go by a trilogy then, it really would seem like the "endgame" of our geopolitics would most definitely be the third world war
I hope book 3 holds off until we have real life Gundams to fight in it. Yes!!!
War is a continuation of politics by other means. Communist China in the Xi Jinping era has sought out a new Cold War, and continuously stated that it intends to use military force to capture all its claimed lands in the South China Sea, including Taiwan.
This is why everyone is arming for conflict: just as Austria crossing the red line of invading Serbia started WWI, just as Germany crossing the red line of invading Poland started WWII, and just as the Soviets crossing any number of red lines could have started WWIII, Communist China invading Taiwan would be crossing a red line and start WWIII.
In each of these cases, the world armed for conflict when the crossing of a red line became a real possibility. Twice we devolved into world war, with the original Cold War only the possibility of a nuclear exchange stopped us, hopefully that will be the case again (though it’s unclear these days whether countries would actually use nukes, even in a world war, which may unfortunately limit the inhibitions of malign actors). But it’s totally understandable why the world is arming: Beijing has sworn to invade a place that Washington has likewise sworn to defend.
Definitely how true right? Seems stage is set. Like repeated simulation.
Japan has always been a military powerhouse.
It’s the only other country aside from USA that has a deep water navy force that could take almost any country.
Imma just be honest with my opinion Japan has anime, good food, cool cars, nice people. I’m all for them rebuilding their military
Having a strong Japan is important to keep China at bay.
I as an American I hope that Japan becomes a powerful nation and Ally but please remain close to the United States we love Japanese culture and influence. Why would we want a weak Japan how could that be good for anyone.
awesome commentary and amazing production! thanks!
Even as Japan has focused on defensive capabilities and that includes carefully avoiding the word "military" for its armed forces, the nation's government has seen the dangers posed by potential, adversaries including China, North Korea, and Russia.
And curiously China in case Japan comes into conflict for X reason whether it is Taiwan or something, will have a lot of resentment for the past of Imperial Japan, Japan is currently playing with Fire, you must know the BIG risk it will take directly with it.
@@Alfredo12 I think Japanese soldiers protecting Taiwan from communist invasion will do wonders to fixing that image of imperial japan.
@@Kaiserboo1871 Nop
The German Bundeswehr isn't a "military" by that logic then, even though it's built some of the most proliferated guns, tanks, and submarines that other militaries also use, so what's your dumb point? Japan has had similar military spending to the UK or France for decades only for you to act like it hasn't been trying just because it's still weaker.
@@Kaiserboo1871 Quite the opposite. Japan would surrender yet again with the same flag it still uses, and most of the world already has a different recognition of Taiwan to you despite you thinking you own the world.
Not a surprise. It's had a powerful navy for quite some time now. As a close ally to the US, I would expect that Japan would be up to the task of maintaining the free world in a very tricky area where it is in close proximity to China and North Korea.
Japan and Germany will be superpowers within the next 15 years

It's worth noting that Japan, Germany and Russia are not the same countries of 80 years ago. The Japanese empire ceased to exist. The Soviet Russian Socialist Republic ceased to exist. Germany was split in two very different countries until 30 years ago... For one, I am glad that countries are thinking of defending themselves against autocratic regimes. We have seen the threat is very real.
On the other part, the threat of war is very real... Maybe World War 3 started already, and we don't know it yet, the same way the people of Europe didn't know what would come once Nazi Germany invaded Poland.
@Priyam Zada it's a parliamentary monarchy and the Emperor doesn't hold real power, nor do most Japanese even care about the monarchy anymore (outside of culture)

@@gtPacheko And all the same exact military-industrial interests that controlled Japan during WWII (newsflash, hirohito wasn't in control of anything, either, lol) are the exact ones in power now, and have been for decades. Average Japanese is politically despondent and easily controlled, remilitarizing will only make that worse and chill political expression even more.
The Japanese empire never "ceased to exist"
While the empire technically fell, in exchange for all findings the experiments japan conducted on Chinese, Korean and south East Asians, many leaders were in fact granted immunity and were allowed to continue to rule.
