I had an encounter with a Dugong in the red sea, - you can not imagine how big it is, somehow like an elephant, and so cute, - the face looks like they are smiling all the time ! Awesome video, i like the anger of Dugong and how he/she solved the problem ! Lol ! Ty! great filming 👍🤩
Funny you mention that since they're actually close relatives to elephants. The golden jack fish shown here feeding on the shrimp that the dugong stirs up actually resemble egrets feeding on bugs that elephants stir up from stomping through the ground.
The Dugong (Dugong dugon) is a sirenian native to the Indian Ocean, it is the only living sirenian to be exclusively oceanic, it is the sole living member of its genus and the family Dugongidae, there are four subspecies of dugong recognized, the African Dugong (Dugong dugon africanum) that resides near the coasts of eastern mainland Africa, Seychelles, and Madagascar, the Persian Dugong (Dugong dugon persicum) that resides in the Persian Gulf, the Indian Dugong (Dugong dugon dugon) that resides near the coasts of India and Sri Lanka, and the Australasian Dugong (Dugong dugon australis) that resides in the seas of Southeast Asia and Oceania.

Grew up in Florida going on regular boat rides and little fishing trips. Love these amazing creatures, i was lucky enough to get the chance to touch a couple at a dock they loved to hang around (boaters who used that launch all knew they were there and all went through that area at walking speed or slower, real out of the way launch up a swampy creek off the main channel) before the stay away laws were implemented. Only ever had one come up under the boat once, boat was barely moving and he just bumped his head before popping up next to us with a look like "yo". Completely peaceful creatures who want nothing more in the world then a soft bed of sea grass to munch on and a gentle current. And yes every manatee ive ever seen has been covered in prop scars. No wake zones means slow the f down. OH btw if you have ever heard the term "sea cow" in an old book or from an old sailor, this is what it is referring to.
I’m also from Florida. We only have manatees, not dugongs. Manatees in Florida & the Caribbean, Dugongs in SE Asia and the Red Sea. They’re related but different - snouts & tail fins are different. Dugong tail fin is like a dolphin while manatee tail fin is round. My absolute favorite memory as a child is swimming with manatees during late winter / early spring in Crystal River when I was 7. This was before no touch laws, and they came up to us. They are so curious & gentle. You also see how they’re related to elephants when you’re up close to them and see the nails on their flippers and all the hairs on their bodies.
Probably water resistance is also less behind the bulk of animal, rather than the front. 🤔 Less effort to cling too. (Lol I saw them hover around that area on people scuba diving.. 😬 fortunately I was too slim to interest them! I'd fight an inappropriate fish 😅)
Lol I was scuba diving, and two remoras kept clamping onto the... erhem...more robust of us divers. We were on a Bullshark dive, so unexpected contact was a little jarring 😂 Remoras are really big/long!

First time I’ve seen a Dugong do something besides be a literal sea potato
They sure don't taste like potatoes
Great great video
So cute 😊
Imagine being tormented be giant flies as big as ferrets
magnificent creature!
Surely they will get him tired. I can feel his tiredness.
he is stressed with his life 🧬

Do the sucker fish really have to hang around the groin, though? 🤦♂
They eat the animals shit so it makes sense 😂

Seems like a lot of energy to get rid of them so they must be pretty damn irritating, poor critter
nice
Must be so annoying to have that many remoras stuck on you.

That's the first time I've seen that animal do anything besides just look boring
Dugong: *cough* graceful...you meant graceful 😅
