Man, the hornet could do it all. I remember island hopping the arctic circle on Meridian... see, we got the O-K to set up these big-ass slipspace dishes with albatrosses and a bunch of guys.. but when it turns out their fusion coils run out of coolant every few months, suddenly it's *all* up to me. They can carry WAY more on a belly-sling than most people figure Needless to say, I had to spend a lot of quality time with that bird before the big sunset.
@@Grimpy970 I was stationed aboard the UNSC Against The Wind from '47 to '48. Covies took off half her bow with a ventral beam, so she was dry-docked and we had shore leave on Meridian for about two weeks. IIRC, this was summer of 2547. I was the newbie in my unit and didn't know anyone on that ship, so I went out by myself and ended up having drinks with a couple of army guys. Next thing I knew, I was flying a Hornet into Port Moyne with the pilot strapped to the skid. They had two birds, two stick jockeys, and one of them was so trashed, we had to literally ratchet-strap him to his plane. Somehow I, the 20-something ODST with zero flight experience and wearing civies, had the best chance of getting the bird back to base. Woke up the next morning in a motel with a civilian contractor on my chest. What a night!
As someone who is learning about turbine engines for my career, I'm very impressed with you explaination of axial and centrifugal flow compressors. The intakes up near the front are pretty hard to explain, but I think you did a good job with proposing ideas. I would think those could also be intakes for an APU (Auxillary Power Unit) to run accessories (hydraulics, pneumatics, electrics) since the main 2 turbines don't seem to have accessories connected to them. In modern airliners, all APUs utilize a centrifugal compressor for packaging purposes, so I would surmise the hornet would be no different. We could also combine our two theories, the APU being used to run accessories and the exhaust of the apu being routed into the thrust vectoring manifolds for a "boost" function.
I haven't actually gone to school to learn these things but I will say that the Hornet is much less feasible than the wasp. The wasp has four point of thrust meaning the cg is not as important due to being able to adjust them. But the hornet basing off a 3d print with the cockpit hollow has a cg very far forward of the engine nacelles. The tail's gotta be way more dense to balance it and that creates the issue of total weight and fuel efficiency. It's a whole thing. That being said I want an rc version
I think it's probably a thermal turbo fan, the front intakes are cooling for the internal fusion reactor. With bleed air expelled through vents at the rear. The engines could be feed perpendicularly to the rotational axis with hydrogen or methane for the afterburner/exoatmospheric operation.
The first vehicle to counter the Banshee in Halo, it really needs to come back as it's probably the best of them all in all aspects. The Falcon comes in a close second though. And 00 is still a channel I enjoy watching, even with how recent he is he's one of the greatest channels in the community.
The way they deminished most vehicles to one pilot operator is kind of annoying atleast we got the passenger ground added back in the form of the razerback but we still need the hornet and the Spector, Shadow, and Prowler
Oh crap how did I not notice they never brought back this specific vehicle up again despite it being a awesome aircraft. How did I not notice it being disregarded by 343 completely I have zero idea. This aircraft was very cool and sad to see it forgotten in the sequels and lore.

The Hornet is definitely one of the best air vehicles in Halo. Bettered only by the Pelican in my mind. Glad to see this videos still up and this was an amazing listen!!!! Great information, and just an amazing job was done

you actually see that IRL with the little bird, it's a light helicopter first but it's capable carrying a 4 man squad in a pinch similar to the hornet, there's no IRL analogue for the wasp
Hornet center of mass is ridiculously far forward of the center of thrust. I tried a 3d print of one just to see that, cockpit hollow and everything. Tried balancing it on the engines with the rest hanging below. It nosed down hard. An rc version is feasible given small motors can be powerful enough to lift it even with the tail weighed down to compensate but. Large scale is a no go. That being said the wasp has four points of thrust which means it may be doable. Gotta print it
Aircraft mechanic here. That secondary jet intake may be for an APU (auxiliary power unit) that provides electrical, hydraulic and or pneumatic power to the aircraft till the main engines start. Looking at the design of the main engines, there doesn't seem to be room for those components (pumps and generators) to be built-in on that airframe so the hornet may need the APU to be run continuously for the main electronics and hydraulics to function.
This is, by far and away, my favorite halo related channel. I love the literal, scientific nature and analytical aspect that goes into your content. 15:48. It's important to keep in mind that this is a UNSC craft, although not operable in space the bird could still be transported through environment that are space like. In addition the unsc is aware of chemical attacks and probably pressurized the cabin in the event that oxygen would need to flow through the cabin in a chemical attach as such pressurization would further isolate the bird from the outside world
I like the hornet so much more than the wasp, the wasp is literally just a better banshee with hitscan and ability to hover. At least the hornet could be called a transport

18:25 i think that's probably the air intake for the APU, that sounds more likely. (In my head) i could also be the 1st stage of something like the water jets that use a 2 stage impellers. Anyhow! great breakdown you know how to give it the level of detail commonly found something like a forgotten weapons video.
Even with the current state of Halo, it's allways easy to follow and enjoy the content because simply put, you make some of the best Halo content on UA-cam. Cheers Mr 00 🤙
Great video man! Flip/flop cyclic and collective function and you’re spot on. Cyclic flies the aircraft directionally, collective flies the lift component as a single unit, pedals counteract torque or allow torque to control the nose by changing angle of blade or engine nacelle in this case.
17:47 This is quite likely a small jet system like you describe, but for stability, not boost - a 2-jet vtol design is inherently unstable in the pitch axis since there's no way to generate moments pitch moments with 2 aligned engines. So a hot air vectoring system like found in the Harrier is essential to keep the main fuselage stable instead of swinging up and down wildly.
Very good video ! But this video has only, at least for me, only 360p, or 1080p premium debit, no 480p, no 720p, exactly like warthog most detailed breakdown

I loved your real world aviation examples usage to make sense of a imaginary aircraft. Very impressive. I loved flying the hornet with my npc buddies. Can't do that with the wasp 😟
Air Pressure is required above 10,000ft on Earth. Different habitable planets will have different atmospheric pressure so maybe they are just playing it safe so they don't realise the hard way haha
Good video - I really enjoy your most detailed breakdown series- and this particular subject is of great interest to me. I really wanted to get into aerodynamics when I was in school, and I have a particular interest in small VTOL aircraft. A profound lack of employment opportunities made me choose a different career path, but I still dabble in aerodynamic design from time to time. I hope you’ll do a breakdown on other aerial vehicles like the Falcon, Wasp or SparrowHawk, if you haven’t already done so.
17:30 so my guess as to the purpose of the third mystery engine is that it’s an APU or auxiliary power unit, a common piece of equipment on modern aircraft that is used to generate power and pressurization before the main engines are started. The pressurization also feeds the primary engines to allow them to start up at the time before their compressor blades are spinning fast enough to allow for ignition. It could also be possible that due to the small size of the primary engines, the APU in the hornet is designed to run continuously even after engine start for bleed air purposes including cabin pressurization and anti-ice equipment as well as being the primary generator for the aircraft. This is not the standard on real world modern aircraft, however modern aircraft also have much larger engines allowing more space for accessory housings such as the generator. Additionally, utilizing an APU for all bleed air functionality allows the engines to provide all their power towards thrust, something that is likely important for a VTOL aircraft especially with engines of that size.
the intakes in the body of the craft probably aren't for a jet engine for forward thrust but rather for an apu or auxiliary power unit, basically the part of an aircraft that provides electrical power when the engines meant for propulsion aren't actually operating such as during initial start up and shut down
That extra jet engine could also be in part to feed extra power to all systems some of the systems electrical. Modern C-130's and many other large logistical craft do have something similar. They call it an auxiliary power unit. And it's basically a micro turbine engine and it's job is to provide electricity for the air craft via whatever means a turbine engine can provide electricity. Having a separate power source than the main engines and batteries make sense. At any rate, an interesting video. Keep up the good work
@@Installation00 after M99 Stanchion I purpouse that the Vulture craft from HW1 get the most detailed breakdown. Despite being a large vehicle it boast highly impressive firepower with flight characteristics similar though less impressive to both the hornet and falcon in hover and low speed maneuvers though I believe the craft is capable of higher top speeds than either of the aforementioned craft due to the structure being inherently more aerodynamic. Which leads me to believe that the vulture craft was not intended for hover combat specifically rather it was to act as a cheaper option to long sword deployment for CAS operations but could also double as heavy medium range gunship. I have always been impressed by the craft but after I joined the US marines my respect for the craft multiplied as any self respecting general would happily March to war against any odds for the chance to get their hands on just one of those crafts
I've always wondered why the unsc never had any 4 man transport version of these, and they can also beef that armor up a bit a little light for the type of vehicle it is
I think they did I can't remember if it's from Halo wars 2 or the book contact harvest I think there's a version of it that could seat for people or if people are careful or slow enough it can seat four people
If those are air intakes on the side of the cabin they are probably feeding some form of auxiliary power unit. Which most jet powered aircraft have to power the electronics while prepping the aircraft Without burning excessive amounts of fuel with the main engines
@@mathis.docquier It's true but if that's all it was being used for then it probably be more at least the weight efficient to take bleed air From the engine behind the compressor and pipe that down to wherever the electronics are being stored instead of having a complete separate fan section
00, one video I would personally love to see is a MDB of the USS Enterprise CV-6 or USS Hornet CV-8. I'd also love to see a possible rewrite of Halo Season 1. Love the channel you, HiddenXperia, Halo Cannon and Eckharts Ladder really got me into Halo and I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart. Thank you, 00. As always find peace in the Domain.
Love the hornet, so fun to use. Wish we got to see it more. Also wish we could get a gunship that could also be used for transport, something between a hornet and falcon.
Knowing the Halo community, I'm pretty sure they could build a life-sized Hornet and Installation00 would literally break it down piece by piece to explain how it worked.
I'm so heartbroken that the Hornet hasn't made an appearance in a mainline Halo game since 2007. I'd argue it's in the top 5 of most iconic Halo vehicles of all time, yet the last we've seen it (in a drivable state) was H2A multiplayer. Absolute injustice to such a glorious craft. Easily my very favorite vehicle in all of Halo.
While it's probably not really necessary, given how advanced UNSC tech is, I might also suggest that the extra intakes on the sides of the hornet could be used to power the auxiliary power/startup engine, as well as possibly doubling as the drive motor for the rotary cannons and the theorized extra air ducts for the engines. Could you do all of that just with electric power? Sure. Could Hornets be powered by very small fusion reactors, similar to MJOLNIR but less expensive? Certainly. Just a thought I had
it should be noted that helicopters are moving back towards using centrifugal compressors, but with a small axial stage ahead of it, due to the shorter length requirements
Idk if its just me but as a halo was super fan 2 vehicles id love to see get broken down are the sparrowhawk and the vulture. Hell even the grizzly id love to see.
Been thinking a this vehicle and how much I miss it and what role it could play in infinite or future sandboxes. I really want to come back in infinite or some future game Great job as always
I just realized: A possible reason for the Hornet to not be seen often is because it is powered by jet turbines. If the atmosphere around it doesn’t lend well to the design tolerances of what can be accepted as intake air, then I imagine it would be unable to function properly. This could be remediated by use of a dual-function, hybrid turbine and rocket engine, though this would severely increase weight, and the amount of time that a rocket powered hornet could remain in the air would be severely limited. On that note, Falcons would make a lot of sense for a much broader range of atmospheres. It seems the Falcon still is powered by turbines, but it can theoretically be modified to rotate its propellers using other means aside from a turbine engine.
Honestly with the abundance of fusion power employed by the UNSC I don't think this is an issue - you can replace the combustion chamber with heat exchangers routed through the reactor core, which allows your turbines to work with any compressible fluid.
I know from my several hundred hours in Halo Wars and Halo Wars 2, That this is the scariest vehicle man has ever made, the UNSC Could've just sent thousands of these to deal with covenant ground forces
What was the one from reach that u get inside of at the beginning of the campaign that has like walls and gunner positions that swiveled depending on where you looked? Was that a variation of the hornet of was that campaign exclusive?
Always wondered why don't they have people use game controllers to fly aircraft? I know some unmanned vehicles do but awkwardly flying aircraft like helicopters seem like it would simplify flying. Like going from a standard car to an automatic one
Love all your breakdowns man. However, I am still waiting on the VK78 Commando rifle breakdown. Perhaps a fast pass over the Halo Infinite UNSC weapons? A single video for all the new introductions like the Commando? Just a though, and will keep watching your channel even if that particular one never comes to be.
It would be cool if the hornet had a "dragonfly" variant. It would have 4 engines and instead two skids it would have a platform. Think crysis 3 vtol, I always liked the fact some crysis 3 maps had vtols you could hop on as they go around the map.

it wouldn't surprise me if they had a variant somewhere in the lore that has 4 seats you strap into, similar to the razorback hog
the pressurized cocpit could perhaps also be just so the craft can be used in toxic enviroments on alien planets.
If those are air intakes on the side of the cabin they are probably feeding some form of auxiliary power unit. Which most jet powered aircraft have to power the electronics while prepping the aircraft Without burning excessive amounts of fuel with the main engines
yeah i was thinking that, it can also be a way to cooldown the electronic, witch is something important but that a lot a people don't know
@@mathis.docquier It's true but if that's all it was being used for then it probably be more at least the weight efficient to take bleed air From the engine behind the compressor and pipe that down to wherever the electronics are being stored instead of having a complete separate fan section
@@grimmpickens5766 it would actually add complexity and be less efficient because it is farther to the electronic that need the to be cooled
You have returned!
He's the reclaimer get this man to 343 Marine
How the hell do you not have more subs man you’re a beast 👏
i always love to see a new video.
I want learn more about the UNSC Sparrowhawk
00, one video I would personally love to see is a MDB of the USS Enterprise CV-6 or USS Hornet CV-8. I'd also love to see a possible rewrite of Halo Season 1. Love the channel you, HiddenXperia, Halo Cannon and Eckharts Ladder really got me into Halo and I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart. Thank you, 00. As always find peace in the Domain.
Love the hornet, so fun to use. Wish we got to see it more. Also wish we could get a gunship that could also be used for transport, something between a hornet and falcon.
Knowing the Halo community, I'm pretty sure they could build a life-sized Hornet and Installation00 would literally break it down piece by piece to explain how it worked.
wow
thats a lot of information
I LOVE IT
Always love these videos
I'm so heartbroken that the Hornet hasn't made an appearance in a mainline Halo game since 2007.
I'd argue it's in the top 5 of most iconic Halo vehicles of all time, yet the last we've seen it (in a drivable state) was H2A multiplayer.
Absolute injustice to such a glorious craft. Easily my very favorite vehicle in all of Halo.
Stanchion inbound, phenomenal news!
How would you feel about doing a breakdown for the Hawk? :D
Third jet is likely an always-on APU for operating the rest of the craft so the main engines don't have any extra load, just propulsion.
Ah Installation00, keeping my interest and hope in Halo alive video by video
ID love to see the falcon next
I think the intakes link to an apu, thus it's mostly for preflight and don't ad to the thrust
You should do a video of the pilot helmet from Reach
While it's probably not really necessary, given how advanced UNSC tech is, I might also suggest that the extra intakes on the sides of the hornet could be used to power the auxiliary power/startup engine, as well as possibly doubling as the drive motor for the rotary cannons and the theorized extra air ducts for the engines. Could you do all of that just with electric power? Sure. Could Hornets be powered by very small fusion reactors, similar to MJOLNIR but less expensive? Certainly. Just a thought I had
With the two side mounted grenade launchers, the hornet is a serious can of whoop ass
it should be noted that helicopters are moving back towards using centrifugal compressors, but with a small axial stage ahead of it, due to the shorter length requirements
Cheers! 💚
Idk if its just me but as a halo was super fan 2 vehicles id love to see get broken down are the sparrowhawk and the vulture. Hell even the grizzly id love to see.
Been thinking a this vehicle and how much I miss it and what role it could play in infinite or future sandboxes. I really want to come back in infinite or some future game
Great job as always
Perhaps next, CAS assault carriers, or the much larger, CSO super carriers.
Conceivably the engines might not even burn fuel but use fusion to heat the air instead.
I know from my several hundred hours in Halo Wars and Halo Wars 2, That this is the scariest vehicle man has ever made, the UNSC Could've just sent thousands of these to deal with covenant ground forces
The jet intake on the side of the fuselage could be simply an APU similar to modern jets.
why it says no stream, tap to retry
Whooooo.... It's finally happening
Would the two seated variant not be a trainer unit?
Can we plz get a falcon video? I love it with the front gun
2010: Halo fans play Halo games
2022: Halo fans watch Installation00 videos and reminisce
What was the one from reach that u get inside of at the beginning of the campaign that has like walls and gunner positions that swiveled depending on where you looked? Was that a variation of the hornet of was that campaign exclusive?
What doing a most detailed breakdown of the scarabs in the series?
Breakdown of the m73 light machine gun and mak5 BR down the road?
I'm hoping that plasma grenade keychain comes with a sticky goo so I can go around sticking stuff
New video pog
I have to say I love and miss the hornet nothing really can replace it.
Is there a possibility of getting a detailed breakdown of the Wasp in the future?
I loved the Hornet, it's too bad that we never saw it after Halo 3
Its possible the third jet is used to start the other two and to provide power generation to the hornet to power the equipment.
Nice Video, Is it possible to do a MDB of the Faclon variant of the hornet, that is seem most commonly in Halo Wars 1?
Glad James May enjoys Halo as much as i do
Always wondered why don't they have people use game controllers to fly aircraft? I know some unmanned vehicles do but awkwardly flying aircraft like helicopters seem like it would simplify flying. Like going from a standard car to an automatic one
Love all your breakdowns man. However, I am still waiting on the VK78 Commando rifle breakdown. Perhaps a fast pass over the Halo Infinite UNSC weapons? A single video for all the new introductions like the Commando? Just a though, and will keep watching your channel even if that particular one never comes to be.
fly by wire is a given for anything halo
Can you do the air assault mkst detailed breakdown?
Oh nvm mind you already got it
Very nice
It would be cool if the hornet had a "dragonfly" variant. It would have 4 engines and instead two skids it would have a platform.
Think crysis 3 vtol, I always liked the fact some crysis 3 maps had vtols you could hop on as they go around the map.
