- Annie Staninec plays the jolly old-time fiddle tune "Roscoe" with Luke Abbott on the viola. Recorded in 2010 at Luke's home in Santa Cruz, CA.
Annie plays with a variety of bands around the Bay Area, often with the Kathy Kallick Band. anniestaninec.com
Luke has a solo album with lots of old-time music like this (but with singing): lukeabbott.com/tmh
I'm just gonna leave this here so someone likes or comments and reminds me of this gem 😊
Old time music needs more violas!
Definitely agree with you there!!!
The more I hear this kid, the more I think the same
Cellos too!
Chris - exactly what I'm considering. Manolin tuned same as violin and not enough separation, but with a viola and a mandolin - this duo proves my point methinks.
Watched this 10000 times. I WILL LEARN IT!
This could go on forever.
I will never tire of this rendition of a classic....
This is like waking up on a sunny Sunday morning
The moments of 3 part full triad harmony are like special treats! Made more special by not being uniform the whole time. I guess the classical music rules would say this is "wrong." So glad this kind of music knows better than to worry about that!
I'm a viola player and I was looking for some challenging songs and I like this one. I'm only in 7th grade so it's a little challenging at that speed
its not a journey without a challenge :)
True
Beautiful sound! I love the sound the viola and violin put off together.
this is next level fencing
I bought a Violin because of this Video hahaha..... i sound terrible, but practice makes.....less terrible..... :D love this video x
Good for you!
How is it going now?
I asked too many people who started the violin and their comment took more 1 year but they dont answer probably because the left the violin
It’s
Mean Soybean, I played for 8 years, from 9 - 18, and I was decent. Not like her though. It’s taken me two years to get my fingers back to where I’m beginning to be happy with it again. I’ve been playing the guitar for over 30 years in the mean time. Let that sink in.
That's great! Practice makes permanent, and keep it up and you may become a world rebound fiddler. Hows it coming along now?
i could be playing this video all day long and not get tired of it... so good that it gave me chills
You are amazing!
Words can't express how much I love this duet! Old-time viola deserved to be the Next Big Thing.

Wonderful - what a beautiful sound.
That was fun. I really enjoyed it.
Luke gives up his somber gaze at 1:35 when Annie kicks it up a bit.
Roger Kobeska who wouldn't fall in love with that playing.
Don' cha love how she makes him smile. Makes me smile too....both her added little punch there and his reaction.
It's a very characteristic syncopation of old-time music. Straight 4/4 meter, "square" tune (i.e., 32 bars), but very often the first beat of a phrase is played one beat early (the gut-bump). Yeah, I like it much better that way too! :-)
You and Annie should do more videos together.
This is just amazing.
I've watched it more than 20 times, im not kidding.
This is now my favorite rendition of this, ever.
That end smile is sooooo cute - what a sweet couple (aside from their mastery!)
What a huge sound! Love it!
Great sound...:)
Two of my favorite players to watch and hear: Luke and Annie so great!
Miss you, Erik!
absolute banger
FANTASTIC!!! Foot stomping FUN!!!
LOVE the viola range and the harmony! Great arrangement, you two!
THAT IS AMAZING.
I love this song!
Saw this a while ago, and I've come back to it at least once a week after that first viewing. It's perfect! I know I'm 5 years late, but extremely well done!
This arrangement was all by ear. I'm sure you can find sheet music for "Roscoe" out there somewhere...
Holy crap!! That’s awesome
I’ll never get tired of this video!
Good times!!
Bravo! What a wonderful duet! One can only hope that Annie hasn't changed one tiny bit since this was taped. !!!
So beautiful I cried. Thank you!
Fantastic
FABULOUS> Love the look on his face when she double times it. Very talented!!!
Yeah, that is a great moment!
When he smiles at approx 1:34 min. mark.
Love, love, love!
What a great duet! Magnificent harmonies! Roscoe is an amazing tune! Thank you for playing and posting😃!
Totally fabulous - especially Annie who is nothing short of a fabulous player!!
talk about tickling the" sweet spot ". thanx so much !
So amazing!
I keep coming back to watch and listen. So groovy.
This tune waking me up and bringing nice vibrant energy.
*foot starts tapping* What is going on?! I.. can't.. stop... dancing...
What reason would anyone have to dislike this?
Outright Jealousy or ignorance. Some people just can't be reached and there isn't any point trying.
I stand corrected. In my tradition, (classical music), syncopation can displace a beat, but cannot drop it. Whatever it is, though, I certainly do like it.
And your joi de vivre comes through on every beat. This is a wonderful video.
I’ve begun playing this from listening to it. Not quite there yet but coming along. Great music
How about now? Got it?😊
This was GREAT!!! Loved it!
I haven't touched my viola in years. It's just been sitting in my closet with a broken string gathering dust. Same for my brother's violin. I've been learning bagpipes for the last few years and forgot how nice a good fiddle could sound. I think I'm going to pick it up again. Thanks.
This version is also in 4/4. It's the syncopation you're feeling, which definitely gives it a different flavor from the "straighter" performances you'll find elsewhere. Great version!
Annie is SO CUTE!!
OutSTANDING!
Wowwwwww... fantastic... vibrant energy!!!
I absolutely love this video. This is a very easy version to learn! Thanks for posting.
Absolute beautiful that guys. Fantastic stuff.
Lovely. Great, lyrical playing that never loses the "edge." Thanks.
Really great thank you for posting this.
Tapping your foot to 7/8 is a special experience, too. I looked for other versions of this,
and most of them are 4/4, which I now find really boring. This one has that gut-bumping
pull at the end of the bar. Nice.
I watch this every day for inspiration. I'm a new violin player. I love love love it. C. Goetz
that....was....awesome. plus she was laughing and moving. awesome to see.
Love viola fiddling, which I've been teaching myself.... Well done and thanks for this great video.
Such a passion - really wonderful! :)
Annie is just amazing, wish I could play like her.
They are both really good! Love the instruments on the back wall!
