We tried a bunch of meal delivery kits, and here’s what we think

  • If you - like 35 percent of your peers - have recently moved to a new place, you might find yourself in an unfamiliar, frigid city on this fourth Thursday in November. Loved ones are hard to come by, because making friends in a new city is quietly, enormously difficult - and now a plane ticket home costs more than your rent. The thought of going to a grocery store to prepare an attempt at a Thanksgiving meal for yourself is enough to drive you to drink your dinner.
    But spending time in the kitchen can be truly therapeutic: you work with your hands and produce something that, if all goes to plan, will nourish you and taste good. The act of cooking nutritious, somewhat complex meals for oneself is a mark of many things: adulthood, authority over one’s personal health, and maybe even learning how to make sustainable food choices.
    Are the same things accomplished when you have all the elements of a meal designed, compiled, and transported (in a monumental amount of packaging) by someone else for you? We took it upon ourselves to try out four meal-kit delivery services - Blue Apron, Sun Basket, Hello Fresh, and The Purple Carrot - to try out the experience for you, dear reader. Watch our video to find out which ones we liked best.

    This would be a great service for shut-ins, those convalescing from surgery, those who want to try a recipe that they've never tried before, those that live in locations where variety of foods is not easily attainable, I know when I've lived in some very rural places the choices are pretty limited, and funnily enough UPS comes by and drops packages all the time so they might like the service too.

    Yeah, hey, finance guy here. A current valuation of 2 billion means they could actually have 2 billion dollars in debt. So don't be fooled by those numbers. There's a lot more to it, but none of those companies are actually turning a profit yet. And most of them, and the ones that pop up in the future are going to fail. Although some of them may also be foolishly purchased by larger corporations so long as the bear market doesn't show up, and start beating the living shit out of everybody. Just FYI. :)

    Sun Basket no longer require packaging to be returned for recycling. All packaging can be recycled at home.

    Blue Apron's packaging actually is fully recyclable, there's instructions on there website for how to recycle the different parts and you also have the option of shipping them back the the packaging and they will recycle it for you.

    All of the packaging in the Blue Apron box can be recycled at home. The provide details on their web site. And if your city doesn't have recycling, they also provide a service to send it back to them. blog.blueapron.com/how-to-recycle-your-blue-apron-box/
    Also worth mentioning that Blue Apron tries to ship from near you. I live in Phoenix, so my boxes are always shipped from Arizona or California.

    Placing emphasis on getting closer to your meal sounds nice, but in reality, full disclosure and commitment to quality ingredients and organic certifications is where we should make our decisions. Environmental concerns? Your city/county needs to be held responsible for making bins or other options available. The company making your meals should not have to deal with YOUR WASTE, driving up the cost of the service for the rest of us.

    i dont think you can rank sun basket with the rest being they primarily deliver to the west coast, such as blue apron the east coast, recycling shouldnt even give points for the fact that there is recycling in most u.s. cities and towns nowadays...they should have been point based on cost/affordability, taste, and content

    • @Jefferdaughter
      @Jefferdaughter 6 років тому +1

      Good points! But it is important not to confuse recycling with reusing packaging, like the insulating foam coolers and mylar bubble wrap. Reuse is much more eco-friendly than recycling. However, the return shipping is still an issue.

    Smart shopping can eliminate food waste just as well as one of these meal kits. Want to use some celery for your ambitious meal? Don't get a whole bunch of celery! Buy a little veggie snack kit that only has about 1 to 2 stocks worth of celery. You just got yourself a little snack on the side. Tada. Mystery solved.

    • @infin1ty850

    60 to 70 dollars a week for a total of 6 meals. At 3 meals a day I eat 21 meals a week. I think I'll have to stick with the occasional Healthy Choice frozen dinners and continue cooking as I always have.

    I've tried Blue Apron and Hello Fresh in the past. Wasn't crazy about the recipes. I got turned on to Sun Basket and have my first delivery from them coming next week, because at least their recipes look interesting to me. You can choose 2 breakfasts instead of one dinner recipe, for example. Sometimes I just get too lazy/uninspired to shop for groceries. I'm bad at planning out my meals to use up extra ingredients.
