The Russians are creating multiple meat grinders, they take strategic points, but want to draw in Ukrainian forces in significant numbers. This is the Achilles heel of Kiev - they will make a stand for every village and town, while being limited in numbers and gear - same as the Germans. The Russians create credible threats, spreading the Ukrainian defenses, and if they reach a critical mass they push the front forward. What works better now in the Russian strategy is the targeting of the Ukrainian energy infrastructure, which puts a huge strain on the economy and people. So the pressure for a solution rises inside Ukraine. Although the west is in a poor situation for any direct conventional confrontation - not at least because the US is spread thin across the globe and has to lift and ship much of its forces across the Atlantic - they are looking at ways to rearm. However that will take some years, because neoliberalism has taken a heavy toll on manufacturing, industry, education and finally the general economy itself (looking beyond the “ponzi schene” wealth for the few).

I had predicted, a few days ago, that the strategic offensive of Karkiv had borne fruit, moving the best troops, leaving the rest of the front, and that a large wave of Russian troops was ready to take back Kerson, and continue for Micholaiv and Odessa. The lack of personnel in Ukraine always stands out further.
The true intention of Russia is to make NATO so uncomfortable that they just had to send in their *_very best troops_* to fight in Ukraine

A bridgehead across the Dnipro isn't realistic for either side. Sure, the Russians have more bridging and engineering assets, but the extreme vulnerability of such assets to drones and missiles means that it's not feasible to establish any kind of significant logistical support across the river. And as the Ukrainians proved in their doomed Krynky operations you cannot rely on small boats and carrying supplies on foot to accomplish anything significant.
