About 1/3 of the way through your video right now, and i'm very much enjoying this video! Thank you for the shout out, too, very much appreciated. Cheers!
Everyone learned it from the same bad tab and just figured out a way to stomp through it. I watched a guy with thousands of views who's a known pro do it and it sounded okay until you slowed it down to half. Because it's impossible to play with those janky fingerings it just sounds like mud when you slow it down. If it's going to be that sloppy to play "correct", why not just play it in the way that makes the most sense and allows you to play it cleaner like this?
Checking back in....I was able to get the solo down (kind of a lifelong aspiration) and realized that the BEST part of your transcription is that if you struggle to match his speed throughout, you can simply play one or two less notes in the turnaround in the final phrase and finish at the right time and literally NO ONE could tell you didn't play every note we THINK is in it. Way more enjoyable than driving yourself crazy trying to keep up with something that might not be exactly what he played anyway.
Thank you so much man! this solo run is actually helping me grow at speed and note clarity. Not only that but your tab explanations was just perfect. To get this alone by ear was impossible for me
Good to see a transcription.. the mic is picking up your lip smacking which is something to keep in mind.. I used to do that, too. It’s an easy habit to stop. Thanks!
Really glad I ran across this video. All of the other transcriptions and videos are doing runs that are so counterintuitive to how a lick like this would be played. I run three note per string, modal position movement stuff every day and had a feeling it’s exactly what he did. It’s so frustrating that this monster run is so buried in the mix as well. Thanks for the breakdown and HUGE thanks for isolating it. Great work!
Thanks for the comment, although my version totally makes sense, I’ve seen footage of Sykes playing the song live, starting the fast run on the 7. position on the A-string, which goes with most transcriptions and solo covers, but there’s just simply no way for me to play it like that.
Thank you so much for this tutorial. That helps me a lot to figure out what is going on. I did my own cover version of this song and i have to say your transcription is the best what you can get. Works 100% if you just are able to alternate picking that fast ;) Thanks a lot. Good Job ;)
Thanks Nico for the outstanding breakdown. I actually really enjoyed your comments on the solo even if they were a little long winded :o) This is a song near and dear to my heart as I used to play it every day in my 1980 Mazda 626 when driving to high school. Always wanted to learn the solo but there just isn't anything out there (that I've seen) breaking down the solo like this. Thanks again for your hard work on this one. Cheers mate, H
Thanks, Nico! As a beginner guitarist, it's great to see how a pro approaches learning a new piece/lick. This one reminds me a lot of virtuoso piano pieces (Liszt, Brahms, Chopin) which make much more sense as sequences of patterns than as a sequences of notes.
You’re absolutely right, fast stuff makes way more sense in sequences and patterns, there almost noch fast stuff that can not be broken down into some sort of patterns😉
Amazing breakdown. Going to go home and start practicing this until it somewhat sounds like the OG one. thank you so much for taking the time to do this for us.
Excellent analysis and understanding of what should have been the recording context of this solo that confirms a lot of my understanding... Thanks Nico!
I've see quite a few you tube videos when trying to learn this solo. There was a video who involved tapping on one note in the early segment of the solo, which i really doubted Sykes would do that. But most other videos had alternate picking throughout the solo. This is by far, the most detailed breakdown one could ever hope for. Thank you !
Thanks for the kind words. I myself also watched quite a few videos breaking down this solo, and tried to find a good video of Sykes doing this song live, but that was no real help, as he played it totally different live. Only thing I could take away from his performance, was that he starts the run on the A string 7th position. My „version“ is just following the rules of „getting the notes right“ and „find a fingering that works“. My first try with economy picking got ditched a few weeks after making this video, I know play this with alternate picking ☺️
I really like how you broke that down. I believe that most of these transcription folks simply slow down the solo with little or no context and try to figure out each note individually, then play it at a slow tempo which is why you get these bizarre fingerings that are almost impossible to perform at speed. Considering how sloppy the line is, guessing at the original intent and playing it in the most likely manner makes the most sense.
Hey bro really so good video i was absolutely crazy on Ultimate Guitar and even in the pro version tabs that are not free, and everybody tab very wrong the guitar solo, like in a very impossible way, i found this video absolutely usefull thank you
Yes! Finally a spot on discussion/tutorial of this classic guitar pice who don't really on IA stupid and wrong TAB's! Yes, this is sloppy played, but it has an energy and intention that has set it apart for close to 40 years. A great pice an your vid did it justice!
Love this entire video great job great assessment and it cleared one little doubt in the section decending bit of the run towards the end . Its late right now but tomorrow i will try and see if i can repair my error . Great job mate 👍
Love how you broke down each movement in sets that helped in comprehending what Sykes was going for at that speed, and then put it all together. Nico, check out "Digital Split" UA-cam channel for better sounding isolated tracks including Still Of The Night, just guitar, bass, drums and instrumental. Thanks for your efforts and for mentioning another great UA-camr, Uncle Ben (Eller) in your notes. Cheers!
Thanks for all your hard work here. That solo is at once both a masterpiece and a flaming mess, and you weren't afraid to say so and work through it. I've seen in the MTV video that Adrian appears to start that ascending scale around the fret 7 E instead of the fret 12 E, but the rest does seem to work. Thanks again. I've got work to do.
@@darhym0 : But by the time the video was shot, Coverdale had fired the entire band that recorded the album and replaced them with guys with better hair.
For strange reason I always played this solo from F# on low E and when I reached the high E I just play random 3nps sequence and try to match the tempo. So far so good haha Will definitely learn the right way from your video. Danke
I've listened and listened to the last climb to the vibrato at the 19th fret and I believe it is 17-18-19 instead of 17-19. Do you hear it? I'm just trying to help get this awesome run right. Great job! I love it.
You just picked up a new subscriber, I’ve listened to this solo so many times, but it goes by in a whir. Nice job thank you! Can I ask what method you use to slow it down but keep it in the same key regardless of tempo?
It's just so fast and difficult , best thing is to try and do an approximation of it with a mixture of picking and lagato. I bet Sykes didn't pick every single note.
+Gawain Davies I have to say, now, that some time has passed since filming this and practicing this to get it up to speed for a cover version, I ditched the economy picking and went full alternate picking (as it is more my natural habit of playing) and it is absolutely doable. I think, with things like this, everyone has to find out, what works best for his / her own personal style of playing. That applies for fingerings as well.
@@NicoSchliemann great advice , I’m also really happy for you that you have now nailed it, well done . I have been trying to learn it and I have found that a relaxed picking hand while trying to get rid of as much tension as possible helps. I have been watching up close videos of Joel hoekstra and Dou Aldridge playing it , they seem to start it with strict alternate picking and then they go into a mixture of alternate and mostly legato at the end. I would love to see you play it if you ever decide to upload the video , well done 👍
Does John Sykes strictly alternate pick all of those 32nd notes? That's approx 13 notes per second and that's quite fast for alternate picking approaching speeds of some guitar gods I believe. How do most guitar players play this?
I think maybe choosing "sloppy" was the wrong word for the situation. This thing is the capture of that moment, the fast run is not a run that has been checked out or practiced to perfection and I guess Sykes never played the thing the same twice. I'm just trying to give it a structure here that you can hang on to, which kind makes sense.

To sit and break this down in this way makes it stale. You saying it is sloppy is kinda gross honestly. It is such an iconic guitar solo that is historic. Rock guitar isn't based on getting every note perfect, it is about EMOTION.... and I will take John's emotion any day over perfection.
I totally get what you are saying, but I was at no point saying that it’s bad, that it’s played sloppy, and I know that rock playing is lot about playing perfectly all the time, but my assumption is to transcribe the stuff and what I came up with light habe been the concept of the line, no matter if it ever up like a bit sloppier version of this on the record.
You explained very good! But really? Who cares? I always wondered who is sticking to these transcriptions Note by Note instead of trusting their ears? Nobody gives a damn about the details! I mean, look: even Vandenberg, Vai, Hoekstra, Beach etc. play it differently and even Cover Bands like Sershen&Zaritskaya (great Band BTW, if you not know them already?) make their own versions out of it and you will not even really notice they are playing something totally different - as long as it sounds GREAT!!
