THR 30II - More than your third amp?

  • The THR 30II falls into the "Third Amp" category, which means that it's not your main gigging amp or your studio amp but something entirely different. While I understand the thought of a small, wireless, battery powered, aesthetically pleasing amp, I don't think it should be discounted in the first two categories. After spending some time with it I think it's going to become a very useful tool for me in several different settings: teaching, travelling and as a backup rig on the road.
    In true minimalist fashion I gave myself some creative limitations while testing this amp to see what it's really capable of. All the music you hear in this video was recorded using the THR 30II direct into GarageBand via USB and I also used it as a monitor to mix the music and edit this video.

    TLDR - this is an excellent and versatile amp. If you're thinking about buying one, just do it.
    I bought this amp for my floor harp and it sounds amazing! Weirdly, it sounds better on the acoustic classic setting than the flat. I find the boutique setting too closed, if that makes sense, but it might be great for other instruments. But add in some echo/reverb and flanger on the classic acoustic setting and it is perfect. Tremolo is great if I want to get weird, trippy sounds, but I have to admit my tremolo pedal more effective than the on-board tremolo. I haven't fussed with the app much though, so I might find some tremolo settings that are better. It's great that it plays nicely with external effects pedals. Not all modeling amps do. I read a few comments that said the THR30II didn't go well with pedals, but I read more comments that said it did, so I pulled the trigger.
    I picked it because it was able to handle guitar, bass, and flat for other instruments. Since the harp has such a wide tonal range, I needed an amp that could handle the range that comes close to a piano's range. When I saw it could handle a keyboard and bass, I figured it could handle a harp and it does. It's not super loud, but the harp is loud enough on its own. This just bumps it up to have further reach for an audience, with line outs to go to a PA if needed, and it let's me use effects. It's awesome that you can get the sound of a big stage amp without driving the neighbors up a wall. The built-in DAW interface was the icing on the cake.
    It's such a versatile amp and great for just about any instrument, not just the guitar and bass. Because so few harpists amplify their harps or use effects, I was going into it blind. I researched for about 2 months before making my final decision on the THR30II and I'm SO happy I did! It wasn't realistic to drag an 80 pound harp to my local music store to test amps out so it was a difficult decision. I got lucky that it works so well for my applications.

    Sounds really good! Unfortunately I returned THR30II because back in October 2020 it was lacking "open tuning" for speakers (which it has now). I compared it to THR10 1st gen and while it had better headroom and beatufil cleans, I did not like crunch and lead. Great channel, subbed.

    Hey, this is a great review. I saw your video in which you broke down how you did recording, but didn’t realize that you also had a review of the THR. I really liked the perspective of this amp as a “tool” rather than just a helper to practice, I agree that this is much more than just an amp.
    The question I have for you is, you mentioned at the beginning of the video that this wasn’t a perfect audio interface, and then I didn’t quite get how. How do you think that this would fall short comparing with any other digital audio interface? I know this, for example, wouldn’t be able to do mic recording properly, but let’s say just for the purpose of a guitar plugged into a computer using the “flat”, and using plugins in the computer to add color. Does this suffice?

    If you still have an “in” with Yamaha can you do a video on the design choices behind the Revstar ii ? Why did they reduce the nut width and round the board to a 12” radius? Where’s the old wide nut and 13.77” radius? We already have the Pacifica line for smaller hands. Anyway no one appears to be talking about this.

    Really nice video! The THR sounds pretty nice, but how it sounds comparing with the more "professional" big guys? Is it just for demo or gigs, or you can use it on some serious / commercial recording projects? Great channel btw.

    • @minimalistmusician
      @minimalistmusician  2 роки тому +1

      The intended use is certainly more for home practice and home use without a doubt but I think you could argue that anything could be used on a commercial project with good results and this is no exception. It is a really great sounding rig, especially when using it as an interface since you loose all the boxiness of the small package. I have not used it for that case however and don't intend to because where I think it lacks is in the workflow. I'm able to dial in specific sounds way faster with my amps and ox or my helix and they're much more versatile in the sounds available. I would say that if you want a small piece of kit for home use and professional use the HX stomp is the ticket. Downside is that you would have to have something to monitor it with but if you have a setup that can accommodate that then you're good to go.

      I bought it on Wayfair and it no longer exists on there but they're probably are similar models. I actually just had an ergonomist come to my studio and set me up properly though because I was having all kinds of back pain from it. I'm using two separate chairs now. One was a custom-made office chair for when I'm doing video and music editing and I got a saddle stool for when I'm playing guitar. Surprisingly way more affordable than I thought it was going to be and has been fantastic.

    Been having a lot of problems with headphones. Using beyerdynamic dt770 pro 80 ohm cans. The auxiliary audio sounds fantastic through them but the guitar treble frequencies and if you dig in with any gain you get nasty distortion or crunching/buzzing to it. This is on all models and includes the clean settings with higher volume or higher treble. Any advice?
