    Shuffle by album on iPods is the best feature E V E R and it has forever changed how I listened to music - it's insane that no streaming service offers this as a feature (but it doesn't matter to me, I'm subscription free baby)

    I totally agree.
    Here's a rant:
    I'm currently trying to pretend it's 2006. I dug out my old Nokia phone and my camera. I'm gonna try switching to this old phone.
    One thing I noticed is that when I glance at the Nokia, I get the urge to call someone, whereas when I look at my smartphone, I feel nothing at all. What I'm trying to say is, the Nokia looks like a calling device to me and my smartphone just looks like a… weird slate that happens to be a black mirror?
    I think this is because smartphones can do pretty much everything. It's just so many features. So many that it's overwhelming. Many of them are actually useful but I end up forgetting they even exist (I'm only comfortable using software that I have a decent understanding of, by which I mean, reading the documentation for a new program is a must if I want to make anything good with it). But I feel like grasping all the features of a smartphone is hard. There are just so many. So I end up with a device that can do pretty much anything in the palm of my hand, with the world at my fingerprints and yet, I do nothing with it. I don't get any cool ideas to try with my phone.
    The old Nokia is different. You can find out about all it's capable of by clicking through every menu in every app you find. Wanna know what you can do with an sms? Just click the left button to see the options! It's amazing. On a smartphone you'd probably have to google "how to mark a photo in the gallery" to learn that you do so by holding your finger on it. If it were an old phone, you could just click the left button and scroll through all the options and eventually you'd find the "mark" option. The controls on old phones were simple: if the option is even there, it is listed in the "options" menu. Nowadays, you have to figure out if an option is accessed by tapping, holding, swiping or whatever gesture you can make with your fingers. When I switched to a smartphone, I often found myself looking for the option list, the way it was on my nokia.
    My old nokia is a nice phone with a bunch of awesome features. I like that there aren't too many of them so I can actually keep track of them in my head and don't end up forgetting half of them even exist.

    Honestly the only problem I had while using my iPod was just upgrading to macOS Sonoma. It created two bizarre issues (when ipod is windows formatted album art will be displayed broken and when you add new music to your library it will most likely forget the ipod and require you to remove and resync everything) so I just installed Catalina to a separate drive and it seems good now.
    Sad that apple's support for these old devices is getting worse.

    Having different devices for different things is awesome. My phone can do everything but to me it feels more like it's good for nothing.
    Devices that do only one thing are nice because: a music player looks like a music player and a phone with a physical keyboard, even better, an actual handset, looks like a phone.
    To me, a smartphone doesn't suggest what it's designed for by its appearance. It's just a blank, black slate. I don't like this. Smartphones are shapeshifters: they switch between different functions, sort of turn into different devices. Whatever device they mimic now is only indicated by a change on the display.
    But the display isnt even real. It's all pixels. You opened a mixing console on your ipad? Cool, you can take it with you anywhere now, great. Where are the buttons though? What do you mean it's all pixels? The buttons disappear and now you're scrolling through facebook on what was your mixing console a while ago?
    This turned into a weird rant in which I sound like an old man who can't comprehend what a screen is, but I actually meant to say I like physical buttons more than hitboxes. They feel more real. When I grab my camera I know it's photoshooting time, whereas when I grab my phone to take a photo, well, my guess is that my brain gets confused like "Phone in hand. Yay! Game time! Wait no I think it's actually tumblr time. Oh wait we're actually taking pictures wtf I was so excited for game time. Whatever. Initiate photographer mode"

      between the poor lighting setup and the not going outside, i didn't stand a chance lol
      the 7th gen is an interesting one to mod. the back case is tough to get open, so be careful with that, it'll fight you. but once you're in there, it has the most potential for crazy stuff - i think it has to be a 7th for the bluetooth mods some people do. the only thing i've noticed is that the 7th is more forgiving with different formats and bitrates and whatever, and it allows for volume adjustment from the headphones if they have the buttons. it's a good device, just make sure not to close the back cover before you're ready lol

    I never get dedicated hardware just so it doesn't have distractions. If I don't want to browse Reddit on my phone, then I simply don't. If I wanted to, an iPod won't stop me.
    I already get involved with my music without an iPod because I don't use streaming service on my phone either, because no streaming service as more than half of my music collection, not anything available in NA anyway.
    I can't take this seriously, I think people just want excuses to play with vintage tech, I mean sure that could be fun, play with them if you want, but don't take the excuses as the actual reason you want to paly with them. Just the fact that you've got yourself like 10 iPods is proof it's not about the utility, it's just a hobby in of itself.

      again it objectively has better sound quality than your smartphone. if you don't care about that, that's fine, the video just isn't aimed at you. but that is a legit reason to use dedicated music hardware. why are you treating this video like it was talking to you personally and not a general overview of some reasons someone might want to use music hardware?

    • @chengong388
      @chengong388 3 місяці тому +2

      @@ltbq No it doesn't, it obviously depends on the phone, and there are way better DAC/amp devices that can connect to phones but not iPods. So if you wanna be some audiophile you won't be using an iPod either.

    • @swine_
      @swine_  3 місяці тому +2

      i can tell myself that i won't get on reddit or whatever when i'm trying to listen to music, but i always do. even if i don't, i'm constantly thinking about if i should switch to a podcast or a youtube video, or a different playlist. not everyone's brain will work the same, but i find the physical separation incredibly useful. i generally have to do a lot of stuff like this in general, i have to coax my brain into doing the thing i want it to do
      if you are enjoying your music the way you are listening now, that's great! my argument is that paying attention is ultimately the thing that matters to the quality of your music enjoyment, i just find this is a useful way to do it

    Ipods make you sound stupid, for buying Ipods when MP3 players did the same thing with less hassle.

    • @swine_
      @swine_  3 місяці тому +3

      i myself do kinda enjoy the hassle, tho i understand not everyone will. if what i wanted was no hassle, i'd still be listening on my phone
      but absolutely, it doesn't need to have an apple logo, it could be anything, as long as you enjoy using it! i don't draw attention to it, and it hides in the shot, but there is a fiio i like to play with sometimes as well. personally, i'm already familiar with apple, so a bunch of my music was already in aac or alac, and the software therefore wasn't that hard for me. plus there's a cool modding community around them, so it's really easy to find parts and whatnot
      so that's why i defaulted to using ipods, and using that word to mean all dedicated music players, but yeah, literally anything else will do the same thing as long as you like using it

      hell I had an mp3 player back then that played all the current(at the time) formats that had an tiny 1.8" hard drive and was still smaller and lasted longer AND cost half as much as an IPOD and didn't wipe your entire list if you had to plug it into another machine to load a song or two.
      doubled as a small portable usb hard drive in a pinch aswell.
