Had my players dogged by a verbeeg warband while crossing the wilderness once back in AD&D 2e. With their random deformities I found that combat just naturally became more colorful.
"You shove your sword through 'Split-Lip's' belly and he falls. Then 'Big-Ears' rushes you while 'Flat-Head' and 'Pumpkin-Nose' hurl their javelins."

I love using Verbeegs as the Wormtongues of the giant/giant-kin worlds. They will either bully ogres or manipulate true giants into being more agressive against civilization.

Good job. I recently picked up dark Alliance for the PS5 and discovered their strength and was wandering what they were. Now the next time I play D&D I think I'll create a verbeeg. I think that is hilarious that they're essentially the runt giants with Napoleon complex. That would be one of the more enjoyable racers to choose from imo. Keep up the good work.

Thank you so much AJ. I love the smaller, nearly forgotten giants like the verbeeg and the forest troll. Just as smart as an average human and so much tougher and stronger! I dream of running a campaign with a grand alliance of hobgoblins, verbeegs, and forest trolls. Hard-boiled forest troll longbowmen with poison-tipped arrows that don't fold to a cavalry charge or horse archer harrying, a verbeeg phalanx (fitted with chitin breastplates for real protection that isn't prohibitively expensive) with pikes as long as flagpoles, and sneering hobgoblin magical support for neutralizing the enemy's tricks and making them actually have to fight their superior regular troops. It would be as dreadful an army as the World had ever seen. One that would make the puny human and elvish lords' knees knock and their teeth chatter!

I was spinning through your troll lore and found myself wanting to say something. Those DMs who want a more Norse authentic troll might think of trying the verbeeg. The Celts tend to describe them as larger... 13' to 15' seems more Giantish and less hominid. Granted Verbeeg are not as scarey as the D&D troll... regen is so much fun

To expand upon the meta history of Verbeegs, since the video has pretty much only given the Forgotten Realms version... Verbeegs vanished into obscurity after AD&D 2nd edition, only returning in a 3e issue of Dungeon magazine (#149, the adventure "Twisted Night"), in which they are described as variant Half-Ogres who favor their human heritage, causing them to be smaller and weaker but smarter than the normal half-ogre. They later were reinvented in 4th edition's Monster Manual 3 as the Feywild counterpart of ogres, as touched upon briefly in the video, where they are characterized as tall, handsome and highly intelligent, but also greedy, avaricious tricksters who love to manipulate and exploit others.

Large PCs could make things more interesting, but at the same time parties with Large PCs would need challenges that require creative solutions. PC ogre Barbarian too large to fit into a dungeon. Have the oni wizard polymorph the ogre just long enough to get through and into a size accommodating area. I wonder what Verbeegs or Firbolgs for that matter, think of Goliaths since a Verbeeg is only a foot taller then a average Goliath. I really hope the new Icewind Dale book gives us some more lore on the Goliath and there relations to Giants and Giant-Kin.

    • @AJPickett

Yet I'm surprised that they aren't playable yet. At nine feet tall a PC Verbeeg could be neat to see. A Verbeeg barbarian could be mistaken for a tall gruff human.
Not to mention it could bring up questions of whether humans were once giants and just kicked out of the Ordning during the war against dragons.

@@AJPickett Yeah, Goliath culture is interesting but the races history and connection to the world is lacking. In Forgotten Realms Goliaths are pretty much just big mountain people that may or may not be related to Stone Giants, so expanding on Golaiths would be cool to see.

Now I am imagining a peaceful and friendly settlement of guides composed of Verbeeg and Goliaths that drink potions of giant growth sprinkled with fairy dust like they are water. To them the bigger a person is the more attractive they are which is true for them, and they recognize and joke about how ridiculous it is getting. Some deer also got mixed in because the fairies thought it would be funny when sprinkling the fairy dust. Their leader is essentially female Bambi.

Great video AJ. I have my own rules in my campaigns when playing a Verbeeg as a PC. Humanity is still old-school AD&D, so playing a Tabaxi (my rules were different because I made them PCs before the rules for them existed, the Cat Lord was a big deal in most of my campaigns as well as some Americas [based upon Seven Cities of Gold computer game] campaigns), Half-Orc, or Subdiaboli (my version of Teifling before Teiflings existed) drew a lot of unwanted attention. The best option was playing a Half-Verbeeg, which is like playing a more human-looking ugly Half-Ogre. It was far more versatile too. Even in my most fantasy level fantasy games, xenophobia never became a non-issue save for outlaw towns and rogue sanctuaries. I never have gone Dragon Lance in making the characters so nothing in scale but the characters did have to adjust to the world they were in and did have an effect on the world when significant enough. One party bough a relatively gentle Ogre and he became an NPC ally, staying with the party when granted his freedom. That Ogre became known as part of the group of heroes. His story became known. The slave trade fell apart because of that, even for "subdued evil humanoids". The party did not even try to do that... and the domino effect outed my campaigns Verbeeg rogues in human kingdoms when Bards spoke with Bonk (the Ogre "hero") because of their funding through the slave trade and misinformation practice... deduced by the Bards, not understood by Bonk.

I go by what the first edition AD&A game described them as. A race of Human Giants. Before there was Half-Ogres, but they are entirely different from Verbeeg. I gave them the full human alignment chances.

@AJ Pickett I think Verbeeg are from English folklore. The first edition mentions Jimmy Squarefoot and Jack in Irons as two Verbeeg. As though the players should know who they are. I also recall them being described as thin for their height. With mild deformities.

Honestly I alter using homebrew the size categories anything less than 10 feet tall is not large if it is a size capable of being attained by humans it should not be considered large unless the person is over 1000 pounds

I don't know how to adress this because I'm shy, but I have a small blog about D&D and a month and a half ago I posted a Verbeeg playable race :) I liked this video, especially the last-but-not-least part, where you say that one should not consider all Verbeeg under the same prejudice and that can very well exist non-evil members of this race, which is the basis of my homebrew race.
