  • In March 2023, I set off from Germany to walk the Ridgeway, an ancient road across high ground in the south of England covering around 90 miles (140 km). 2023 was the 50th anniversary establishment of the Ridgeway as a UK National Trail, and it was also the year of my 50th birthday, so walking the Ridgeway seemed like the thing to do. As well as for the adventure, I decided to raise money for Macmillan cancer support, a UK charity close to my heart.
I departed Avebury on Saturday 4 March 2023 at around 13:30hrs and reached the summit of ivinghoe Beacon on 8 March 2023 at around 13:30hrs.
This video covers the second leg of the walk, an 18 mile (29 km) stretch from somewhere between Smeathe’s Ridge and Hallam to Hill Barn Farm, where I camped for that night - thanks to Joan for hosting me in her garden and letting me use some facilities.
It was from this point in the journey that the weather really started to turn from chilly and windy but dry to snow and sub zero temperatures.

Hi, great videos. Did you walk this in March (guessing based in daylight hours and the weather conditions)? Was finding water as difficult as people say?

Terribly sorry only to be replying now! Yes, i walked this 4-9 March 2023. Finding water directly on the trail is a little tricky, but I never had any concerns about running short. Took me ages to locate the water tap hiding in plain sight by the house in Hallam, that was the only real trouble I had. It is a very dry route, though, and in summer you would want to carry plenty if you’re wild camping.
