Slightly more mid and low end on the 714 but really almost to close to call. Both guitars are beautiful. I like the dark binding contrast with lutz spruce a little better. If someone were to give me either of these guitars I would give the 714 the slightest of nods. These two guitars are the best sounding guitars I’ve heard. Can you imagine what they’ll sound like in 10 years!?

I settled on a 714ce, finding the Lutz top to be the difference in adding more color to the tone to my ear, if that makes sense, but then I'm a sucker for Adi and European Spruce vs. Sitka. I liked the 814ce (owned a DLX non-V class for a bit) but for whatever reason, the 714 is my fit. I also dig the aesthetics of all wood vs ivoroid. Both great guitars and as always, a wonderful demo from Chris. Thank you!

Before the V-Class bracing the difference between the two were farther apart making them more distinguishable from each other. The 714ce is definitely louder than it was before the change. The 814ce is still slightly more responsive on the high end. Both great guitars. Just boils down to what's needed for the individual. I'll take both please and thank you!

Chris always does such a wonderful job with his demo of the guitars he features. Both of these guitars are just beautiful and have their own unique sounds. The 714ce is a bit quieter but the balance is just amazing. The 814ce is louder and seems to extenuate each stings sound more, if that makes sense. I own both of these guitars and you could not pry them out of my hands. I love them both equally. When I sing and play, I use the 714. Doing finger style, I like the 814 better as each string punches through more. One more thing to note, the 814ce has the Gotoh 510 tuners the 714ce has stock Taylor tuners. To be honest here, I am going to have the Taylor tuners switched out as they really do not belong on such a great guitar. That is my take and again, I want to thank Chris for the service Alamo provides. They a top notch people doing a great job of providing information so that guitarist everywhere get to share in the love of their passion. Thanks Guys.

Personally tried both guitars and fell in love with the 814ce right away with the way it feels in your hand and resonates against your body. However, I play my acoustics live all the time and found the more resonant body of the 814ce to feedback much easier. Settled for the 714ce instead and still loving it.

Those bass notes from the lutz too rang out so much better than the sitka, and not overwhelming, but I think the sitka struggled in that area. Here at 7:35 and 8:20. Those bass notes sound much stronger on the 714

Admitting my bias, my preference (just slightly) is the 714ce, but then I own one (a 2016, non-V braced one), but I love it's mix of tone-woods (and thus, tones), aesthetics, etc. Granted, both of these may be "factory-built," but--and maybe this is just my sense--they also feel like custom models too, with their better quality woods, use of hide glue, etc. And given their respective prices (for which you could sink the same $$ into a small-bench luthier's offerings), perhaps this is only natural. For my tastes (and recognizing that others may feel differently), the 714ce specs out very closely to what I'd want if I were asking for a genuinely "custom" guitar anyway...

Beautiful playing. Fine guitars have personalities, and to me the 714 seems more confident in itself while the 814 is a little shy, but has moments where it shines through. I just tried a few out and I'm stuck between a 414ce LTD and 814ce, or a 714ce online that I have to buy to try. I wish I could buy them all.

Overall, the tone is close enough to my ear that I would probably fail a blindfold test. However the 814 performances sound clearer to me so perhaps there are subtleties to playability or responsiveness of the tops that make the 814 a slightly better instrument.

I'm surprised many people chose 714.
The 714 sounds warm, good resonance, soft, comfortable, and a little nylon string feeling, which is an excellent guitar.
But 814, it comes to me like " Wow! That's a definitely America style guitar!"
It's hard to explain. It sounds like a cowboy seated in front of campfire, with a horse, a river, and stars.

The natural all-wood rosette and binding aesthetics of the 714ce knock me out. If I hadn't heard the 814ce side by side I would gladly take the 714 home. But honestly the 814, to my ear, has a more pleasant full presence. Articulation of both guitars is fabulous, the 814 a bit better. I think the Sitka top of the 814 provides a bit more control over the attack (greater headroom) and keeps things orderly in complex playing style. I love them both but, even with the favored all-wood cosmetic aesthetic of the 714, I'd still take the 814 home first. I own a custom (LR Baggs Anthem) 814ce from 2006. It's a marvelous instrument but the new V Class bracing has elevated the model to another level I think.

I was surprised. Don't get me wrong, I own a 714ceV myself its very good to play but i really don't feel the V class is a huge improvement in terms of the sound quality after experiencing it for a few months except better intonation. Different models might come up with different tone with the new v class so make sure that you try them well first. But the higher end Taylors have very good aesthetics. Sometimes its more of their looks that attract me. :)

When the Lutz top was described as having a slightly muted treble vs. the Sitka top I was all prepared to hear this...but I didn't. Easily the 814 has a smoother and slightly restrained treble over the 714 and here, to my ear, this makes the 814 record much better. Too, the bass is obviously more dominate from the 814. They sound beautiful but break easy... video response ua-cam.com/video/38-9G21wjRs/v-deo.html I guess if I bought a cheaper model, I would not have a problems with taylors. Taylor said if caused by humidity, then my fault. You have parts of 6 states in which Taylors can live without damage anywhere else and they break. So my beef is not the Taylor sound, but with the quality of guitar that cracks less than two years after purchase, this guitar is not made to be a durable product. I spent $1000 on it. Three friends of my local bluegrass community told me their taylors had split as well. Taylor guitars are not made to last.
