That old guy that you were talking about, who never got any mail. It was nice hearing his story. He probably never thought anybody would ever hear his story or care. And though he's probably long gone by now, you brought his existence and his story to the world. When I get old and the world forgets about me, it will be such an honor to have whatever legacy I built for myself be shared with others, even if no one ever knows my name. The few minutes you spend doing this and answering these questions aren't just insightful and entertaining, you gave that man a gift that no one else probably could ever have.

Speaking of prison habits that still remain on the outside, my best friends oldest brother did 5 years in Angola Penitentiary in Louisiana and 4 years in Tucker Max in Arkansas previously. They were pretty much back to back as he broke parole from Tucker and did some stuff in Louisiana that got him sent there. He's been out since released in '93. For the first half a year or so after he was released, whenever we were outdoors, he would always look upward in all directions like he was checking for activity in guard towers. We used to joke with him about it all in good fun. He loved talking shit, so he never took offense to it. He actually found it funny.

When you talked about the fact that you were amazed by the technology when you got out i was a bit shocked, i am currently studying safety and security management and psychology and sociology are a big part of that. Having quite a bit of knowlidge about "the criminal mind" im convinced that prisons should not be focused towards punishment, but rather (re)education and reintegration into society. I am dutch and our prison rooms are quite "luxurious", you get a private room, a closet, a toilet, paintings on the wall, a relatively good bed and you can rent a tv. In prisons you get the choice to work and to study, or both. With working, you earn money (a little, but enough to rent a tv and have some extra) and it prepares you for when you get out. People compare our prisons with hotels, but they are very wrong about that, there is a difference, a very big one, with hotels, you can walk out whenever you want, whilst in a prison, you can not.
From what i hear about the american prisons i get the idea that americans have the mindset of: "out of sight, out of mind". You cant just lock someone up for 10 years and expect them to reintegrate into society flawlessly and unnoticed, if you dont teach them a job or skill or whatever, when they get out they only know one thing to do, which is to steal/rob/whatever.
I would love it if you could get a grip on the current prison system in america and drastically change the way it works, it will take a long, long time. But it will be worth it.
Maybe you can visit one of our prisons oneday when this whole covid19 mess is dealt with and get to see and hear the differences with your own eyes.
God bless you and be safe out there on the other side of the pond
