It was a great learning session. I've one question and that is when you are mentioning B C D, before these names (before the concept of European music theory) what we used to call them?

In south India we call "Shruti mane" (Kannada) or "kattai" (Tamil). Example a 3 kattai would mean Shruti of E. Mane in Kannada means house and it basically refers which house of Shruti does our voice belong. Hope this helps.

Hey, thanks for such a great video. I have a doubt regarding my sound pitch. I downloaded your app and I was practicing the basics sa Pa Sa. I could naturally sing sa in C - 1 kattai but to sing pa or Pa i had to make effort. Does that mean my natural pitch is C? which also agrees with what you talked about male pitch in the video. I just want to confirm. Hoping you would reply!
If you have never sung classical before this happens. Which is madhya Sa can be sung easily but to go to Pa becomes hard and upper Sa harder. If this happens regularly then I suggest you sing each swara slowly like S Re G Ma Pa etc... Going straight to Pa or upper Sa can be hard for some people. Even if this does not work, then reduce your base pitch to say to B and then try. But the good news is that you are able to sing Sa in C pitch. . so you are already blessed

Namaskar Guruji, It was wonderful to listen to you explain the nuances of Hindustani classical music for people. It helps, those interested, to appreciate it better.
Based on this episode, I had two queries:
1] Across the globe in different cultures- at least the prominent ones- people have set the octaves so. Why is it so? Can't there be a pitch (using this word in my ignorance) in other than these seven? Why only these seven- or is it a rule that we simply all follow?
2] You explained about Mandr, Madhya, Taar sthayi. Do these three form part of the ten Thaats that you mentioned, and about which you said they were laid down by Pandit Vishnunarayan Bhatkande jee?
Do we have examples of notes in those seven other Thaats - either by singers, or in nature that led Bhatkande jee to enunciate them so?

First of all it is the nature of sound in our universe which is a harmonically spread spectrum..in other words the frequency repeats itself infinitely.. only thing is our human ears can only perceive the audio frequency range of lower 20Hz to 20K Hz.. above and beyond this we cannot hear it. This is plain physics of sound.
Now your specific question of cant there be any other than the 7 (12) swaras in an octave (saptak) ? Since the audio wave frequency repeats itself you will anyway catch the next octave again.. In our system of music we identify 12 swaras (to be simple) S R R G G M M P D D N N.. within a stayee. These repeat in harmonics.. one can have a pitch of any of these 12 swaras.
Second question..These stayees have no bearing what so ever on the 10 thaats that we identify. The raag classification suggest by Pandit ji is accepted as ONE of the ways to understand the various raags and its characteristics.

Check in all 3 scales u mentioned.. where u sing comfortably till Pa of higher octave...
