It was definitely my hope to use these videos to provide a better understanding behind this universe and its history so I'm glad it played off well haha
I absolutely love this game, though I’ve never beaten it before. I got stuck on the final fight with Ridley, and now I know why. I kept using missiles, when I should be using the charge beam. Thanks for the tip!
For sure! The Ridley trick was actually something I discovered recently too! On that note, during that battle with Phantoon, go into your menu and disable the Ice Beam (Don't forget to turn it back on afterwards!) The ice effect actually makes him go intangible more often and prolongs the fight
Bit of a correction regarding the manga: Ridley didn't actually crush Samus' parents in front of her eyes. That was just a nightmare/hallucination of hers. Rodney, her dad, died in a self sacrifice explosion to kill the space pirates and protect others. Virginia, her mom, died while rushing to her aid as she was under attack by Ridley.
This is probably my favourite game of all time, the atmosphere is just perfect and everything comes back to this. Samus is one of my favourite charters in all of fiction as Is Ripley from Alien as I like the totally cold badass but not actually aggressive attitudes they have and hey nailing the atmosphere and tone of a film that is a masterwork of well... atmosphere and tone helped solidify the idea that games are as much of an art form as movies. The strange distorted music is found in my music collection with all the dark synth components, even the end with the Metroid saving you and going against its nature is a theme I work into my games of D&D.
It is just a fantastic game, even the fact you are sent back to where you end the first Metroid kind of says it is the game they always wanted to make and makes the previous entries flaws look like they exist just because they lacked the tools and power necessary to make this game yet they clearly show the continuation of the story and basically remake Metroid but continue the story rather than retcon it and start fresh. The whole thing is a masterpiece.
Super Metroid was my #1 favorite game for the SNES growing up, possibly my most favorite game overall growing up. SMB3 would probably be #2. I remember charting new paths to save time and studying the maps over and over to find better paths. I remember learning new skips, to only later abandon them for better ones and feeling great for discovering something new. My preferred path as an adult is mostly the same than as a kid. I never knew mock ball then, so that changes things up a little bit.
I'm really digging the monster designs. The other games were pretty cool too, but this feels like they went hog wild with the designs and I am here for it.
I hate that I've never been able to enjoy this game, I've tried over the years but... It just doesn't sit right for me for some reason. Still love watching reviews for it though
I mean, It's not a game for beginners, that's for sure. I feel like Super Metroid is best appreciated if you're already familiar with a lot of the design tropes of the franchise, so starting with something like Fusion or Zero Mission is the way to go
For me personally, and I’m in the minority of Metroid fans with this, I genuinely had such a bad time playing this game and a humongous reason was the awful controls. My first Metroid game was Samus Returns, then I beat Fusion and Zero Mission, and finished off the 2Ds with super and I wanted to like it but it’s age really shows and ruins the experience for me. Floaty Samus does not work for me, and having a run button when literally no other Metroid game has one is straight up a flaw. The remakes of 1 & 2 are the best versions and fusion is similar control wise to ZM so going backwards in time to play super did not work at all. ZM was so good that I had never laid a finger on it before a few months ago, but it was so awesome that I had a great first experience and I’m already playing through it again. I’ve seen people say that the controls for super get better as you play the game more but I don’t want to play the game ever again because why should I have to change how I play a game in order for it to be a good experience? All other 2Ds I played I can pick up and play and if I fail then it’s my fault but in super I’ve died more times than I can count cuz of the way it plays and I’ve fallen down huge gaps because even though I know how to wall jump Samus just decided to stop. I get very heated talking about this game but that’s just me and everyone is allowed their own opinions so if someone sees this and doesn’t agree that’s fine!
Keep trying, I was the same way. Eventually I just sat down and forced myself to practice wall jumping for five minutes, and after that it all just… CLICKED. The floatyness, the 2 different jumps, the way your momentum changes from the ground to the air and back, it all just suddenly made sense. I now consider it the best game I’ve ever played and It’s like my 4th-5th favorite game of all time.
I feel like they have and haven't, like there's area where they've improved but in other ways the attempts to make the games more accessible have made them more mindless and in turn the environments and level design are either too uninteresting or too convoluted. Super Metroid struck a better balance than most of the other Metroidvania games I've played since its release
It's Super Mario World for me. I'd say it's #5 in the SNES's "Top Games" list behind Super Mario World, Final Fantasy II, a Link to the Past, and Chrono Trigger.
Seems to be ignoring Spider-Man 2 when you said "Today i'm looking at something i never looked at before, something considered the greatest game of all time" I see, lol
Comprehensive retrospectives like this are really helpful because this is now the most clear I am on the lore behind this franchise.

@@WayneisbossWayne is not boss, Wayne's MOM is BOSS!!!
03:39 that music is really well used in Dread.
Crocomire fun fact- if you don’t shoot or attack him, he won’t shoot fireballs or attack you. He’s just hanging out.
I always feel bad killing him.

This is one of my favorite snes game soundtracks! What a great game, wish I had it back when I still had my snes, thank god for digital destribution.
Oh for sure, I'm really glad this game has been so well preserved
Awesome video man!
I love Cream Soda Dr. Pepper to 😅
ugh this didn't show up in my sub box but luckily i got notifications turned on for you !
Great review of my absolute favorite SNES game!

Oh for sure, the creatures in Super Metroid defined a visual style for the 16-bit era and I love it
Welcome back
Look, right
We don't have Cream Soda Dr. Pepper in the UK
but hot damn
I want some
Super Metroid is a good game
Dr. Pepper is better, sorry not sorry
Dude, it's such a good soda hahaha
Dr. Pepper tastes like donkey doodoo from a donkey's doodoo/doodoo days within a donkey doodoo.
I want to replay this game now, damn you
This game is pretty wizard, huh
DAMN RIGHT, BOY

Great game and I wish I appreciated it more, but I think Metroidvania’s have gotten a lot better since.

0:44 Saying that right after reviewing a bunch of Klonoa games makes me sad.
I feel you but let's be real, nothing in the Klonoa series has ever received that level of recognition
@@Wayneisboss That's my point and that's sad.
I wonder how he got 3 different backgrounds on his monitors. Is it 3 different computers or another trick?
Baybee?
I genuinely believe Super Metroid is still the greatest video game ever made.
