Another leak-known location is the oil pump housing & oil filter base (VTEC solenoid housing), on the passenger side right above the crank pulley. The seals get rock solid after about 200K miles/15 years. The oil pump housing itself is sealed with Honda's paste sealant. If someone plans on keeping their Honda/Acura for a LONG time, those are also good places to inspect.
The serrations on the open-end wrench is Snap-on's patented Flank Drive Plus & is very useful.
Thanks for the tip! Here is a video to the VTEC Solenoid gaskets you are talking about: ua-cam.com/video/Fk01Frx_I7E/v-deo.html
@@bundysgarage Yes Sir, that is the guy. Another guy, the oil pump housing, is right next to it which I'm sure you know. I believe Permatex's oil resistant black sealant would work too, but I usually go with OEM supplies so I have a tube of Honda Ultra Flange Sealant. The service manual calls for the spray type sealant for the oil pan, but that stuff sputters and the paste type works just as good.
@@JPN850R so what's the fix for that?? Changing out the solenoid??
I just liked two videos, and I appreciate them. My only comment (not complaint) would be a request for the reassembly to be included in the video.
I saw it in a different channel. The disassembly was discouraging, but song the rapid reassembly was like, 'Oh, okay. I can handle that.'
Again: great videos, and thank you.
Thank you....I owe you a beer. Have been having a problem on the front driver side....it wasn't the valve cover gasket....you pointed to o-ring near the EGR Value....that's it. Thank you!
Thanks so much for the video. Your tutorials have inspired me "wrench" maintain my '02 MDX. While my repair ended well, I honestly needed to know more about the rear thrust plate locationo 5 r else what to expect. After finding diagrams online and watching several other videos I made it happen. Gonna do the valve adjust & VTEC solenoid gasket next. Big thanks to you and your tutorials!
Dude these videos are amazing! For such a long running engine, good J series information can be hard to find.🙏
Huh, good to know. I don't have that problem right now, but I'll keep it in mind; thanks Bundy!
Keep in mind that Honda calls them thrust covers, my service writer had to dig to find the OEM number in our system due to it having this funky name.
brother your a legend ive been wondering what was leaking down there and changed the valve cover gasket and b seals when all i needed was that O ring although to be fair all the gaskets were fubar anyway
Need to put together a 'J' with twin turbos.
From a 3.0 to 3.7. Let's see what we can put out!
Im having the same problem on my 06 3.0L ima try and see because i was gonna buy a whole new head gasket but if its just the O-Ring i need
Hello I am enjoying my j series engine in all three of my vehicles. This engine has been rock solid reliable for sure. Off topic I'm at 150000 miles I noticed my valve train is noisier on one of my vehicles. How imperative or important are the valve adjustment.
There are arguments about valve adjustment on Honda/Acura's engines, and some don't bother as long as the valves don't make noise when the engine is cold. I used to be one of them, but changed my mind recently in an attempt to cure misfire. I checked the clearances and the intakes were too loose and the exhausts were too tight. You don't notice it when driving, but I feel it needs to be done at every 30K miles or so.
@@JPN850R okay thank you. When the engine is cold it sounds good. When it reaches normal temperature the valve train noise appears. I guess I'll get the adjustment done prior to misfires. Thanks for answering my question.
Hey man, I know this is an old post but I hope you respond quick. I ordered the same seal that you put in the description, but it looks much smaller than the one on my seal plate. I have the same engine.
Anymore videos on this motor?
I have TONS of videos on the J Series V6 by Honda!
@@bundysgarage awesome 👌 I'm now subscribed my brutha. Thanks
Trying to help my sister with as whole mess of dripping leaks on a 2004 Odyssey, J35A4. Where should I start to look for leaks?
Valve cover gaskets
@@bundysgarage Thanks
Would this leak show signs of drops of oil coming to the bottom of the car?
I'm losing about a quart of oil over the course of 3 months by that time I'm due for an oil change anyways. But would love to not have any oil coming out in the driveway. 07 Accord EX-L v6.
Edit: I read your pinned comment I suspect it's that vtec solenoid seal u were referring to
yes, the #1 leak is "oil filter housing" gasket, the #2 is the actual "oil pump" O-Ring.
#3... realize that old engines need to vent out blow-by pressure, the more seal you replace, the more it's going to blow the next weakest seal.
In that regard, PCV is a good maintenance item to help good venting.
@@glasser2819 the VTEC solenoid gasket replacement resolved my issue. Thanks a billion!
