She is gorgeous. May I recommend that you paint the deck of the porch green because every muddy footstep is going to show on the white! Ask me how I know!!! : )
We have since decided to paint the deck boards brown for exactly that reason. Now that the weather has turned, it's really easy to see how dirty that porch may get.
@@kathycassell590 I would prefer a stain to paint, but after sanding off all the layers they can get to without the super-strength industrial sanders, there's still bits of the 10 layers of paint left on the deck. We don't have the time to sand it down further, so paint it will be for now. The boards will need replacing at some point, so we may go back to staining in future.
I can’t tell you how much I am enjoying your journey. This has always been a dream of mine but at 70 years old, that ship has sailed. Thank you so much for sharing your journey - I anxiously await each new episode. Best of luck to you and Peter!
I'm so glad you're along for the journey, K.D., and sorry to hear that you aren't working on a farmhouse of your own. Our journey has had way more downs and learning curves than we expected, but I am hopeful it will all be worth it when we're finally able to move in.
We have heard that from a few folks who live in the South, Jeff. It may be why the old paint was a light blue. We may yet go with that color if the white on the ceiling is too intense in the summer months.
The house is just beautiful, and I would say very appropriate for the age and style of the home. Those plates are beautiful and will look great in a China cabinet or hung as decorations.
We really wanted something that would be in character with the age and style of the house. I'm glad you like the plates; figuring out how to display them will be a future adventure! Perhaps it will necessitate some antiquing. ;)
I never thought of myself as decorating with old dishes, but I've been watching this UA-cam channel about a French château and they do a lot with plates. And to be fair, we use them every day, so why not invest in some that bring joy?
I agree about the green trim color reminding us of house colors from the 20th century - I remember houses in the Scottsville area having this exact color for the trim, and a pale creamy yellow color on the body. Thanks for the info on the china you've "inherited" - my favorite is the Wedgwood Raleigh Green. The colors look similar to your house colors!
The plate colors were highly influenced by the colors of the house; that's why I picked up the green plates in the first place! I can't do green and yellow; too much Green Bay Packers football colors growing up in Wisconsin. :P
The more you do the more I absolutely love The House at Honey Apple Farm so beautiful I've always love old houses with wrap around porches I always get excited to see the progress ❤️
The further down the "to do" list we get, the closer we get to seeing the vision we had of her become a reality. It's really satisfying! I can't wait to hang out on that porch.
White and green are quite the combination! For years, I've thought my heraldic colors would be silver and green, but now I'm wondering if they ought to be white and green instead. :P White is harder to keep white, which may be why I chose silver in the first place? Anyway, thanks for the comment and yet - the renovations do seem to move faster when there's such a visual change on each visit!
Looks beautiful! Reminds me of Anne of Green Gables home. I agree that the porch floor would look good green. I think the front door would also be beautiful green.
The Anne of Green Gables home was a large inspiration for this color scheme! Rosemary, I watched the first season of Anne with an E when it came out but never got back into it! I remember the first season being good, though of course it isn't the original.
Thanks Miss Agatha! We're told that a wire brush on the painted stones will work, so that project may be in our future. Sand-blasting feels a bit much as we want to protect the stone and mortar underneath as much as possible.
The house is looking beautiful, the deep green and white are so good. Love the China you have, i have a lovely full dinner service, we don't tend to use it as it's hand wash only, but it's lovely to look at. ❤
I am so glad you like the green and white. I can't stop staring at it; it's such a beautiful combination! Having done dishes by hand all summer, we are not at all keen to do them by hand going forward. So like your dinner service, I suspect these plates won't see much - if any - action.
It's amazing how much of a difference the painting makes! Researching the plates was really fun; I can see why folks fall down rabbit holes! There are so many pretty designs.
I was amazed at how easy the Google image search was! I suspect there may be more of that kind of research in the future. :P Glad you liked the plate info! It was fun to find out more about them.
Oh my goodness. This is so exciting. Your home looks amazing. I haven’t watched the video yet. I just saw a snip it and had to tell you how beautiful she looks.
Since the paint on the rock is fresh, I’d ask James if he could remove it. It’s a small area and a quick sandblast would take care of it. In the 50’s, my grandmother’s 75 year old house was light yellow, white trim with a gray porch. Think I’d stay away from a white porch floor. On the Chokin plate - my son’s babysitter was getting remarried (she was a widow) in the mid 1980’s. I got her a Chokin plate. They were just coming out in the gift shops. Have been watching your channel since the beginning and have enjoyed your journey so far.
What a lovely comment, Sandy! I'm so glad you've been around for the whole journey so far. And thank you for the additional info on the Chokin plate! It's so strange to find so much about the style but nothing about the company or artists who make them. Your grandmother's house sounds quite lovely. Yellow is my favorite color, but I just couldn't get behind it for this house. White and green seemed such an obvious choice! We are changing the porch floor to a brown, though - I have no desire to see muddy prints across a white deck every day.
I agree with Judy Rosy, I think the floor would be much better painted green ,white floors just don't wear well 😊 Another good video, the house is looking soo good ❤
Glad you enjoyed the video, Phyllis! We've actually changed our minds about the floor color and are going with a brown in hopes of hiding some of the dust, dirt, etc.
I loved hearing the excitement in your voice, as you walked around your newly painted home! She is looking so cared for. Side note. I did respond to your question to me regarding our 6.5 acres but I'm not sure if I sent it properly. Did you receive it?
She's definitely looking like a home and not just a project! If memory serves, I did see your response to my question. But feel free to post it again if you like!
Your house looks very nice! Once you get settled in it would be wonderful to have an artist sketch the house and maybe design a logo with the image for you to use in your future enterprises.
Your house looks great, I hope you can seal up and use that beautiful front door , it will really good with new paint and wood is so much more homey than the new metal ones. Im afraid you might regret it later, ask me how i know.
We aren't going to be able to reuse the front door or the south door or the door into the kitchen because there are gaps between the door and the floor, and that's not good for heating/cooling/etc. However, we are saving the doors for a future project (and it turns out that the door into the mudroom can be rehung!)
I'm glad you're part of the adventure, Leigh! Yes, I asked the team to save all the old windows. Greenhouse is definitely at the top of the list, but maybe also cold frames? Honestly, I couldn't bear to just throw them away, and then I got to thinking about how useful they could be. :P
After talking with our general contractor, he feels a wire brush would be the best option to remove paint and the least destructive to the stonework underneath. So we'll probably do that in future; the idea of sand blasting or pressure washing feels a bit too intense for my liking.
After some thought, we're going to paint the decking brown. Grey is still too light in the sense that it will show a lot of mud and dirt, although I do like the blue-grey color they have it painted now.
They are lovely old doors, but unfortunately we are getting rid of all but one of them. They don't sit level with the floors underneath and the wood needs some serious work. We're saving them so we have them to use in future when a project takes our fancy.
Are you sure you want the porch floor being white? Any dirt will spotted and magnified. Over different things coming contact with the outside elements. During throughout the year.
White floors on the porch will be a nightmare. The dirt will show on the porch floor even painted the green. But it won't be as noticeable as it will on the white. You will be out there scrubbing that porch floor all year long. Ask me how I know. I have had a wraparound porch on my 1916 farmhouse for almost 32 years now. Think of that porch as another room. I always fantasize about having a big porch. But when I got one. It's constantly needing swept, washed, cobweb swept, spider web swept, etc. It really is like having an outside room that mother nature messes up on a daily basis. 😊
We've been discussing the porch floor color at some length, and since I don't want to wash floors every day, we've decided on a brown color instead of white. It will probably never be "picture perfect" and free of dust, cobwebs, etc., and that's ok. We're not super fancy people (and that's what a screened-in porch or conservatory is for, anyway).
That white brickwork that they painted white… agree it’s not what the house wants…. But would the green work there?….. the house does look beautiful though 😀
An interesting idea with the green, Lesley. Honestly, Peter and I really love the stonework, and it's very much part of the local environment. We want to showcase that as part of the house and not hide it behind paint.
We could, but that might damage the stone underneath. Apparently it will come off easily with a wire brush, so that's probably what we'll do at some point.
Great question! Our original plan was to paint the door green, but seeing how rich the green molding is around the door, we're now thinking we want the doors to stay white with black accents (ie knob / hardware).
I don’t think the stonework painted white looks bad. Maybe sand it off it it really bothers you. I wouldn’t paint the porch floor white, it will show every scuff mark & dirt & mud. I think they make like a stain that is like paint. A darker wood stain would look great or any wood stain.
Peter and I really like the stonework without paint and want to show it off, so we may wire brush it off eventually. Not something we need to do immediately! We've actually been discussing the floor color and have settled on a brown instead. The wood has too many layers of paint for us to easily hand it down for a stain, alas. :(
Peter and I were talking after this video was filmed and came to the same conclusion. We're going to paint the porch floor a brown instead. Thanks for the comment!
Too bad the flagstone was painted. Maybe you can sandblast it in the future to remove it.😊 Growing up my parents homes were this color. One had a green roof and grey flooring on the porch. The other house had a brown roof with red painted porch and walkway.
Gosh, that red porch must have been quite stunning! We thought about grey for the porch floor but have decided to try out a brown and see how we like that. And apparently the stonework can be un-painted with a wire brush, so we may do that in future!

Consider painting the porch floor green to appear cleaner during muddy and dusty times.
We're actually going with a medium brown for the porch floor for exactly that reason.
What a difference paint makes! She's looking like her life is coming back again! I know how excited you must be!!
It's really incredible how much of a difference the painting makes to the look and feel of the house. It's so much fun!
Down here in the South we would have painted the porch ceilings light or sky blue. We believe it wards off spooks and haints.

It is so exciting to see the paint actually going on the house! Much more satisfying than trying to image it!
She appears to be smiling! The old girl seems to be very happy. You have already done so much.
That's a great way to think about it, Kristine! "The house is smiling." I love it!
It looks fabulous! Imagine how great it will look in spring when it is surrounded by green!
I have so many visions of spring on this property, including hanging baskets and flowers at the base of the porch studs. :)
