the movie very much implies the dad saw Taffy, not the mom, and was likely just as checked out of the previous marriage, so there was no emotional baggage other than "going through the motions as people expect to see".

Liza Soberano really shone as Lisa's kindly stepsister, and I hope that she receives more roles in mainstream projects. Kathryn Newton really carried the movie, as she does with almost all of her roles, and I was very impressed with Cole Sprouse's performance, considering that he had to communicate with grunts most of the time. Those mime classes really paid off.

Haven't seen the movie, but maybe the way the second marriage is handled is supposed to be a parallel to classic fairy tales like Cinderella? The first Hellraiser also had a similarity like that. -Teo
I agree, I felt that the reference to Lisa's dad marrying Janet so soon after his first wife was brutally killed would have some importance later, and maybe Janet orchestrated it, but no. It took me out of the movie a little, but it was still a decent watch.
I enjoyed this movie a little more than I was expecting. It has the makings of becoming a cult classic, much like Diablo Cody's previous "Jennifer's Body." Robin Williams would be so proud of Zelda for directing her first feature length film.

To be fair, the characters that are killed in the movie deserved it, and while being played more for comedic value it’s delving in the mind of Lisa who basically got the short end of the stick and did what she thought would help with that until finding peace with herself and to arguably the only person who truly cared for her. I don’t think we’re necessarily supposed to find the character sympathetic, more or less “I understand why this is happening” and the parts that we’re “supposed to find her likable at the end” is again mostly played for laughs
Saw this a few weeks ago. I enjoyed it fine! Funny thing, I went to see Bob Marley: One Love the week after and the theater accidentally played Lisa Frankenstein instead of BM. And it was in the same theater room I saw LF in, lol. I ended up waiting an hour for another screening of BM in another room and got to see it.
Ok, groovy. Seeing the commercials I dig the premise and seeing the talent attached got me perked up. I can wait for streaming and make it a movie night. Thanks 😁😁
Honestly, I loved this movie. I saw the trailer, and was very excited for it. Saw it on opening day in theaters. I personally liked it? I thought it was a lot of fun. I especially liked the animated opening. Now yes, the part where Lisa gives that speech to Taffy and it does ring hollow. Especially given what just happened right in front of her. All I know is, I loved Taffy and hated how dirty she was done in the film. Loved Lisa and the Creature, Cole’s acting was great!! His physical acting was absolutely hilarious!! All in all, I liked it and I recommend people see it in theaters.
I hope the mixed reaction isn't too hard on Zelda Williams, she's been through a rough patch on social media for the past decade. But it's nice to see the criticism isn't on her directing as much as it is the story, I don't know how much she was involved with the writing so in that regard she should be guiltless.

I remember seeing Juno back in high school as part of a class since it was one of the more popular coming of age type movies and I remember liking it at the time but I haven't seen it since.
2 things, one correction/clarification and one... "interpretation", lets call it. 1. The movie says that the father and the step-mother MET 6 months after the murder of the mother, but the movie takes place 2 years after the murder, and considering that Lisa says she's new at the school for senior year later on, they havent been in town for more than a few months, meaning that the parents likely got married within a year of meeting each other AFTER the 6 months passed, which, although still VERY tight, is a bit more reasonable. 2. (Spoilers, technically, but Ill be vague) For the last bit that you felt tonal whiplash about (I did too), I get the sense that someone involved with the story thought that the thing the stepsister did to "betray" Lisa was FAR worse than it actually is when you look at it, and probably thought it justified more asshole behaviour from Lisa than it really did. Thats really the only reason I can think of for why the finale has the tone it does. Overall I just didnt love the way the stepsister was ultimately portrayed by the end. I cant tell whether the screenwriters hated the character more than the director did resultin crossed wires, or Liza Soberano just played the character too well/likeable for the later "knife twist" to really land, especially, again, with how relatively minor a transgression it was.

Diablo Cody wrote the script, who got lucky with "Juno", somehow got an Oscar for it, and has been coasting on it ever since.
