This guy's rage wasn't actually spurred from pronouns. There's a character in the game who is a cis woman, who is a clone of a man. She's not a trans woman. This bearded baby heard "I was cloned from a man" and couldn't understand the difference, so this is where he lost it. Even when it was explained to him that's not what he thought it was, this character isn't trans, he still went ahead and did this. There was no trans character for him to get mad at. He made it up himself.
That part comes later. He wasn't mad about the game letting you choose pronouns. He got mad because of an interaction with a female character. The character says, "I've got something else to tell you." The guy replies, "What, that you're a man?" jokingly She explains how she is the genetic clone of a man, which, if you have ever consumed Sci-fi media, wouldn't be weird at all. The guy then gets mad thinking the character was trans (she wasn't), keeps ignoring her explanation, and goes on the rant we all saw. He wasn't even mad about pronouns, which would've been ridiculous enough. He got mad because he THOUGHT a character was trans because of his joke. Nothing happened. He also makes a weird comment about moving to Japan, where he can find a big-breasted Japanese woman who will want to be his trad wife.

I think the weirdest part of this "controversy" is... wouldn't a futuristic sci-fi be exactly the genre where you'd expect differences in gender expression? Like gamers complain about "inserting" modern politics into historical properties, so wouldn't Starfield be the RIGHT place to insert them? Science fiction has always been an area to explore ideas of gender identity (and identity in general). Look at the Forever War, anything by Ursula Le Guin, or anything cyberpunk. This isn't even new at this point, it's themes writers were exploring literally 50 years ago.

As a future game dev, I’m going to make sure there is a “select your pronouns” button in every single game I make. Before the title screen even pops up just a quick prompt whenever you boot the game up “what are your pronouns”. I think it would be quite funny, especially to include in a single player game that already has its own protagonist. The pronouns won’t change anything, they’ll just be there to piss these clowns off.

It’d be even better if the player character is somehow super divorced from even the concept of gender and/or sex entirely. Honestly the only concept I've ever struggled to get through to my cousin who was like the sometimes annoying little sister I never had was that when I tell her "no you can't do that you'll hurt yourself", I'm not telling her she's physically incapable of doing the thing without hurting herself, I just don't want her to be possibly hurt on my behalf by helping me, because I was the older kid and she was my direct responsibility during babysitting time. I don't think I've ever struggled to get anything else through to her, even some pretty complex things like the gist of how a nuclear reactor like Reactor 4 of Chernobyl works, cooling system and meltdown-wise. What’s especially crazy is that choosing your pronouns at the start of Starfield is virtually the same as Professor Oak asking if you’re a Boy or a Girl in Pokemon. The only real difference is that it’s in the form of a pronoun giving the player more control of how they’d like to imagine their character. Literally just a quality of life update to already existing customization features.
It's not really the same at all, The Professor Oak Question used to make me cry because I had to share a gameBOY with my brother and he would have beat the shit out of me if I ever picked Girl on my save file.
When I, a cis woman, started starfield and saw the pronouns option and neutral body type choice I was like "huh, okay", created my cis self insert and moved on with my life LOL. How is this even a problem?

I actually think it's smart from a programming standpoint to ask, because some games just call you a "they" the entire time even if you pick a male or female character which bothers me more than being asked for them to correct it and actually call me a "he"
Then there's me, who sometimes likes making characters who are androgynous AF, and I get stuck in a game that only accepts he or she when realistically they'd confuse everyone into using "they" literally because you can't tell if that's a "flatscreen" gal who has a lower voice range, or a round-faced dude with birthin' hips and a higher voice range, and the clothes do not offer any other clarifications as that could be a tomboy girl OR a particularly colorful scene boy. Best practice is really "let the player tell you how this character should be addressed". And it's not hard, speaking as a casual game dev who putters around in RPG Maker. Literally just have a global variable track a chosen pronounset, it's no harder than the game "remembering" the class/background you pick and adjusting dialogue for flavor.
I remember the days when female characters were limited to Lara Croft, Samus, and Barbie. I am so glad we have more options now. It doesn't ruin my experience if I'm forced to play a male character, but it's a lot easier to imagine myself as my character when they are more similar to me. I'm beyond happy that character creation options are expanding. I do not understand how this is a bad thing to anyone.

It was actually our marriage counselor who refused to see us but decided that she would give me therapy pro bono which lead me to see I was in an abusive marriage and more counseling to see the clear strategy of these type of people. Since seeing ppl like this up close and person, I can confidently say these people are miserable and will never be satisfied. They are the epitome of the the man in hell who is doom to sit at a feast only for the food to rot when it touches his lips; the only salvation they see is to drag as many people down with them as possible and they still will never be satisfied.

I discuss things with these people all the time, I just need to brace myself before I do so. It's been a good activity for me and I've made several friends "across the table" so to speak who have come to the same conclusion as me that their fear of trans people has been corrupted based off some other fear of theirs (say a fear of government over reach or a fear of the unknown) I don't mind people getting "expressive" because eit gives me a chance to use "expressive" language and behavior against them to both sell my points and to point out where I have practiced forgiving them and being civil with them to win over those stupid "moral" victory points
I've kinda come to appreciate the terms "SJW" and "woke" and tirades about pronouns these days. If I hear someone use these in an argument as a reason they don't like something, it basically acts like a "this person is full of it about everything" disclaimer. There are legit reasons to give Zenimax/Bethesda flak, like their treatment and termination of a trans Elder Scrolls Online dev. A small amount of inclusivity and customization features isn't even on the list of what's wrong with Bethesda and the rest of the game industry.

Ironically enough, In Baldur's Gate 3, the absolute winner of GOTY, you can pick your pronouns, genitalia and pretty much date anyone. It's even "woker" than Starfield.

It's honestly pretty asinine to get upset about human characters having gender neutral pronouns in a work of science fiction that also has aliens and robots in it.
The only reason you can be "pulled out" of a game by pronouns (and at the character selection screen no less - the very first thing you do before the game has even started) is because you are so focused on it you lose your mind the very second you see a hint of it! It means you are obsessed by this topic to an unhealthy degree.
It's funny how The Sims 4 did have alternative pronouns options for ages, but when Starfield came out, only this guy know about it and had a meltdown. Maybe it's just him.

It’s a role playing game. That means you can select the gender of your character. So how else can in game dialogue can refer to your character without using the name everytime? Pronouns! I don’t see this being brought up enough by the left, the inclusions of pronouns in a game like this is normal, we shouldn’t fall back on “why are you so triggered over pronouns” we should call out the “gamers” not knowing basic game mechanics so they can’t rebut it with us being sjws, because if we also mention that this is a normal game mechanic they have less of a leg to stand on.
Well that kinda misses the point because in the past most games you just choose a gender, it doesn't display the pronouns, and there is no nonbinary representation. Saints Row used to just have nearly every NPC say 'they' when referring to the boss, regardless of the boss' gender. Nowadays, the chuds would get upset at that prospect despite the fact those games are like 7 years old at least.

It is funny that people are complaining about this game having a pronoun option especially considering that some of Bethesda's games, like Fallout 76 just use They/Them pronouns for all players. Got a mod idea: replace the 'pronouns' field in the creation UI with 'genitals' and the pronouns with names for genitals. Then, once you've built your character: the game uses the 'wrong' set of pronouns for your set of genitals at every possible turn. (Just to see what how the 'complaints' are 'phrased')

Funny, I’ve almost always played as female characters because it allows me to make decisions independent of how I feel as a character and instead think about how the character would react to or feel about a decision.

This guy's rage wasn't actually spurred from pronouns. There's a character in the game who is a cis woman, who is a clone of a man. She's not a trans woman. This bearded baby heard "I was cloned from a man" and couldn't understand the difference, so this is where he lost it. Even when it was explained to him that's not what he thought it was, this character isn't trans, he still went ahead and did this. There was no trans character for him to get mad at. He made it up himself.
That part comes later. The reason he thinks shes trans despite being a clone is hes a fucking literal toddler who thinks that Cloning in the real world is like a cartoon where you step into a machine and an exact copy comes out and that if a clone is a different gender 'they must have transed themselves!!!'. As a future game dev, I’m going to make sure there is a “select your pronouns” button in every single game I make. Before the title screen even pops up just a quick prompt whenever you boot the game up “what are your pronouns”. I think it would be quite funny, especially to include in a single player game that already has its own protagonist. The pronouns won’t change anything, they’ll just be there to piss these clowns off.

What’s especially crazy is that choosing your pronouns at the start of Starfield is virtually the same as Professor Oak asking if you’re a Boy or a Girl in Pokemon. The only real difference is that it’s in the form of a pronoun giving the player more control of how they’d like to imagine their character. Literally just a quality of life update to already existing customization features.

I actually think it's smart from a programming standpoint to ask, because some games just call you a "they" the entire time even if you pick a male or female character which bothers me more than being asked for them to correct it and actually call me a "he"
I've been calling EVERYONE i meet 'they' for ten years. And only 3 people have ever noticed.
Then there's me, who sometimes likes making characters who are androgynous AF, and I get stuck in a game that only accepts he or she when realistically they'd confuse everyone into using "they" literally because you can't tell if that's a "flatscreen" gal who has a lower voice range, or a round-faced dude with birthin' hips and a higher voice range, and the clothes do not offer any other clarifications as that could be a tomboy girl OR a particularly colorful scene boy.
Best practice is really "let the player tell you how this character should be addressed". And it's not hard, speaking as a casual game dev who putters around in RPG Maker. Literally just have a global variable track a chosen pronounset, it's no harder than the game "remembering" the class/background you pick and adjusting dialogue for flavor.
I remember the days when female characters were limited to Lara Croft, Samus, and Barbie. I am so glad we have more options now. It doesn't ruin my experience if I'm forced to play a male character, but it's a lot easier to imagine myself as my character when they are more similar to me. I'm beyond happy that character creation options are expanding. I do not understand how this is a bad thing to anyone.

Until you're represented in a fair way you don't really get that feeling of "oh I'm a person too hahah" I find it funny how I picked that middle option in pokemon uranium and it didn't register to me that oh that's the non binary one and it was such a natural choice for me, I'd like more enby options but yeah its not a necessity, overall I'd like actual characters to play as rather than blank slates. oh and character creators are overrated

It was actually our marriage counselor who refused to see us but decided that she would give me therapy pro bono which lead me to see I was in an abusive marriage and more counseling to see the clear strategy of these type of people. Since seeing ppl like this up close and person, I can confidently say these people are miserable and will never be satisfied. They are the epitome of the the man in hell who is doom to sit at a feast only for the food to rot when it touches his lips; the only salvation they see is to drag as many people down with them as possible and they still will never be satisfied.

I discuss things with these people all the time, I just need to brace myself before I do so. It's been a good activity for me and I've made several friends "across the table" so to speak who have come to the same conclusion as me that their fear of trans people has been corrupted based off some other fear of theirs (say a fear of government over reach or a fear of the unknown)
I don't mind people getting "expressive" because eit gives me a chance to use "expressive" language and behavior against them to both sell my points and to point out where I have practiced forgiving them and being civil with them to win over those stupid "moral" victory points
I've kinda come to appreciate the terms "SJW" and "woke" and tirades about pronouns these days. If I hear someone use these in an argument as a reason they don't like something, it basically acts like a "this person is full of it about everything" disclaimer. There are legit reasons to give Zenimax/Bethesda flak, like their treatment and termination of a trans Elder Scrolls Online dev. A small amount of inclusivity and customization features isn't even on the list of what's wrong with Bethesda and the rest of the game industry.

It’s a thing in Germany (maybe also in other very gendered languages?) because there is no gender neutral pronoun, just he and she. But while I always try to respect the wish to not use pronouns, it’s a little difficult to do/ remember sometimes

It’s a role playing game. That means you can select the gender of your character. So how else can in game dialogue can refer to your character without using the name everytime? Pronouns! I don’t see this being brought up enough by the left, the inclusions of pronouns in a game like this is normal, we shouldn’t fall back on “why are you so triggered over pronouns” we should call out the “gamers” not knowing basic game mechanics so they can’t rebut it with us being sjws, because if we also mention that this is a normal game mechanic they have less of a leg to stand on.
Well that kinda misses the point because in the past most games you just choose a gender, it doesn't display the pronouns, and there is no nonbinary representation. The existence of they/them pronouns as an option is what they are truly mad about. They do not want to acknowledge trans or nonbinary people's existence in any capacity

Saints Row used to just have nearly every NPC say 'they' when referring to the boss, regardless of the boss' gender. Nowadays, the chuds would get upset at that prospect despite the fact those games are like 7 years old at least.

The rant that this guy went on wasn't even prompted by the pronoun selection in the customisation. It was from another character who was a cis female clone of a different male character. He got mad because he saw it as a trans character (she wasn't) despite the fact the male donor - female clone is a literal staple of Sci-fi at this point, (X-23, Doctor Who, Ultimate comics Jessica Drew, Bad Batch).

Funny, I’ve almost always played as female characters because it allows me to make decisions independent of how I feel as a character and instead think about how the character would react to or feel about a decision.
Remeber when they lost their shit cause there was less options for clothing in Pokemon one time? Like there is some actual nuance to that issue of course, but after years of being told "lol character creation in games don't matter" when asking for better options and representatoin, seeing the pages and pages of butthurt cause of it will forever make me feel vindicated.

That isn't a reaction from someone who's winning is it? Babyface rage isn't righteous anger, it's frustration because we're seeing progress, the needle is shifting. Not to say that Bethesda are superheroes by any means, but the pronoun part is a very important addition to character creation that may get more common as future games could take after, and it's TORMENTING their tar black souls.

It's strange to me how people who call gender affirming care "genital mutilation" seem to also be in support of circumcising babies for religious reasons, despite their inability to consent to the surgery.

The average age for Gender Affirming Surgeries is far older, usually in the mid-to-late 20s or 30s (IF they even can get access to it, because it largely has been made difficult to access)

i LOVE the continuous assumption that it’s so easy to just decide one day to be trans and ‘getting the surgery’ as of its a same-day shipping situation. asdfghdgs it’s so so sooooooo lengthily of a process, almost as if it’s deliberately drawn out to try and make you question whether or not you really want it. it took me literally three years to FINALLY get approval for hrt/ let alone getting surgery approval which they delayed for two more years 😭😭😭 and that was as an adult- the process for kids is even longer!!! it’s just amazing that so many folks assume that we can just ‘turn’ over night.

Anyone can change their gender at any time, because its a social tool of identification. If you can't discern sex and gender, then you need to consider revisiting lower level education.
