Corrosion Repair On My Expedition Jeep

- Some routine maintenance on the XJ this week, although it turned into minor corrosion repair with a surprise hole next to the front spring mount.
Its -38c which is a bit too cold for wilderness outings for me so its a good time to do a few jobs on the XJ. One of the main jobs is taking apart both leaf spring packs to diagnose if one of them is prematurely sagging or worn. I was hoping to get an oil change in, and replace the chain/bearings in my np231, but I ran out of time on this one due to the surprise corrosion repair.
I apologise for the bad audio and visuals. it's been a bit of a hectic week, so unfortunately I didn't get as much done as I hoped. Anyway thanks for watching!

You are a man of many talents, Mike! And no, "it" doesn't ever end! Expecting excellence from others to the same degree that we expect it from ourselves can be an exercise in frustration. Hopefully the water pump problem can be easily solved without much hassle (or expense). Hang in there and thanks for the update on the XJ. That really is a sweet looking build. You should be proud of all the hard work you have put in to date.
Thanks, mate, more by necessity, I think sometimes. At over 140 euros and an hour for car repairs, it's best I do it myself, haha. Also, I do enjoy it, apart from when brand new parts die! Pump bearing has gone, so I've bought another lucky dip. Thanks for watching!
Its an amazing skill to know how to tear down your car an fix / repair your own vehicle even if you know how to change your oil and your filters saves you a tone of time and money. Cheers Mike!

It strangely makes me feel better about my constant battle with rust to see that even with all your thorough work to avoid and control itit can still get you!
Rust is a pain in the ass. I'm pretty sure there's loads of minor corrosion spots on my jeep. The penetrative wax's help slow it down, providing its minor.
I knew a guy who bought an XJ from the South where they salt the roads. It was orange underneath. Flakes of undercoat pealing off with this bright orange rust under it. You knew it was just the tip of the iceberg. Never the less he just sprayed over it with more undercoat. The perfect habitat 👌

If coolant is leaking from the weep hole on a brand new pump, that means the seal is failing.
I also had the gangster lean on the same side as you & replacing the coils, retaining hardware and isolators helped. I also adjusted the sway link on mine. I know your components are all new including the axle buckets so check the top mount & the unibody. You can measure the coils to see if the lean is in the suspension or not.
Our builds are so similar that I'd love to put them side by side! Minus the passenger side drive obviously, lol!

The jeep lean seems to be a thing, doesn't it. I will check my coils and measure everything. That's something I never did, so I appreciate the tips.
Ah nice, yeah, that would be fun standing them side by side and then realising we've been talking all day. Hahaha. It's rare for me to bump onto another enthusiast in these parts. It happens occasionally, though.

That's what I like about you Mike... you know how to grease a shaft up! LOL . If you see a nipple get on it!! 😆 No half measures when it comes to the ole repairs and maintenance. I was the same when I was at the Mechanicing full time I just can't be arsed with it now well I go through phases. Was a large part of my life in my younger years worked for Ford for few years and an also an independent garage.. I just got jaded with it ,probably how you got with the bushcraft channel. People think it's all fun and cool and the best job ever but when you do it 6 days a week 10hrs a day it get's monotonous and stressful dealing with wingeing prick customers and asshole managers. It soon wears thin. Just look after me own motor now.
Anyway Keep er lit Boss! Sweden looks the business. Living the best life. Have to get myself over there someday.
There's no cavity ungreased in my realm, mate. Unfortunately, as is human nature, too much of something does end up killing it for us a bit. Like you, when I worked as a bushcraft instructor, I was also running the other channel, studying and making field guides, knives, leatherwork, etc. It was all too much, I think. I ended up burning out.
I still enjoy the wilderness more than ever, and also bushcraft. But my persute of knowledge in bushcraft skills slowed down tremendously.
Hopefully, I have learned from my past mistakes. I try not to burn the candle at both ends, and I walk away and switch off to enjoy time with my son. I will see how I feel in another ten years.

Always good practice to give the rear end some love.
Maybe try sending some compressed air into the weep hole. That might push back the seals into the groove better; or may not

You guys get some very cold weather. Makes our winter here look like your spring. It was -44 here last week. Too cold for wilderness outings for me personally.

wouldn't the grease between the leafs make salt dirt and road grime stick to the leafs thus causing them to rot out quicker then when in a normal rust belt? can you do a future update this spring on how they look/lasted through the winter, I know with cold weather grease will stiffen up unlike summer heat it thins itself out with heavy use and heat buildup? awesome content!!
They don't salt the roads here, fortunately. But dirt and grime will most likely stick to them. When the summer comes around in June, the greater will most likely be much less than it is now.
I will make a future update on this in one years time when I service them again.

I just put new leaf springs on my XJ
My favorite days are when its time to give the rear some love. Does that water pump have a warranty? And yeah, I'd be filling all those cavities with motor oil, bar chain oil, cavity wax. Anything like that.
I went full squirt with the cavity wax. It's the only way. I think it does have a warranty. That's a good point, I will follow that up today! Appreciate the memory jogging

The bearing had play in it. It clicked from side to side. It died very fast.
Some rear-end loving, loads of grease... I thought this was supposed to be a " working on the jeep" vid not a "Let me show yall how I earn my living " video! Well, I suppose I'll watch it anyway, I could always use an extra fiver throughout the week.
I usually use your videos to fall asleep like most people so i hadnt noticed the change in quality at all!

Det har varit riktigt kallt. Huset kämpar på när det kommer under -30. Jag ville inte gå ut och filma ifall något skulle gå sönder.

I’m surprised you haven’t installed shackle relocation brackets already.
I used to have them. I removed them as they are not necessary if the correct leaf length, hight and shackles are used.

Thanks for watching and the comment. The jeeps about 2300kg fully loaded with me on board. It's pretty heavy, but it never seems sluggish or lacking, but I would like to lighten it. How I don't know.
It's a little difficult to establish a good weight ratio to you power ratio... I hate overloading my XJ. I suppose it's due to we live in Australia and in a hot climate. I have done all one can do to keep it cool, bonnet vents, keeping the original cooling sys in top condition and installing a override fan switch. Normally it's only used as a weekend play toy rather than a full on overlander set up like yours.
What is that undercoating you used? Awesome vid!
I use dinitrol 3125 first, then a heavy coating of something like Tetroseal from Carplan. Thanks for watching

There's a possibility that I might pick one up over the years to come. It all depends on price and availability, but I will keep my eyes open.
strange that the water pump dont last long i have had my xj from 2015 until now and has changed maybe 6-7 water pumps on it so now i have a spare with me when im driving
That's the same story as me. They must be bad quality parts or bearings surly! What brand pumps do you buy?
I could only find the 3 last i bought the last which didnt last long was a unbranded exspensive from skruvat the one i have now that has lasted quite some time is mapco my spare is a redix if i find the other one i have used im putting it out here

Where did you get that inner fender liner material? Im guessing you cut it creating the shape you wanted. Also in Europe with an xj.

My water pump started dying after 2000 km! 🤯 It started to make weird scraping noise. And the worst thing was that nobody was suspecting it, so I've started replacing other stuff. I was manage to find the issue with the stethoscope.
I've had a similar scraping noise from the last one I had. There f@cking annoying. I've changed properly 6 in the last 5 years. Glad you got your issues resolved mate.

I find it comes in waves. It works for a while, and then I see something, then something else.
They are Rockey Beadlocks from Jack Wheeler. Basically a cheap steel Beadlock.

@@WorkshoptoWilderness I know the Feeling, '96 XJ 4.0L Sport,just dumped about 470.00 bucks into it,new Alternator + install fee,New Battery and fixing to put new plugs and Wires in,but Too Damn Cold outside for these old bones to get out and do it, got what I need for parts,just waiting until I check out of the RV Resort next week and get to a warm house with a garage!😁

Why you use mud tyres with nails in snow? Try to buy snow tyres , if the road is not cover by snow you will not be able to use the tyres anymore
I have 2 sets of tires and wheels, as do most in Sweden. These are only used in winter. Actual winter compound tires don't do so well off the road in deep snow.

Then comes editing. That seems like the hard part.

Always looking forward to your post! :) by the way I noticed your front drive shaft slip joint on your last video spacing to be a bit close. I have seen many transfer case post showing those obliterated and always think maybe it is cause by the drive shaft jamming into it while the suspension is extended. I have had to move my front axle forward to give more spacing until I can get a new adams drive shaft. Keep up the great job on that awesome XJ ✌

Great work. Some metal fabricators use oxy acetylene welding rods as filler for metal gaps to make welding patches together that have a larger gap. As to the water pump, everybody is complaining about the poor quality of parts and sometimes they are the wrong part.
The brand new parts being shit right out of the box or shortly after... story of my life.
Very common for those xj leaf spring brackets to rust out
How is rust in your area of Sweden? Is all this residual cancer from its earlier days in the UK?

The rust is from its earlier life in the damp atmosphere of the uk. Here in Sweden, there is no road salt (where I live), and the air is often very dry.
It also lives in the garage when not in use.
There probably are lots of minor rust areas still on the jeep. I guess in time I might find them. It's got so much film wax inside and out of it, so hopefully, this slows it down.
Nice job on the jeep! The shims you installed on the rear axle usually get bolted on with the leaf pack with the center pin. Looked like your bolt wouldn't have been long enough to do it that way. Should work the way you did it as well.
Oh, right, I had no idea they went on that way! Thanks for telling me. Like you said, it wouldn't have worked without a longer bolt. Hopefully, this way works, should do I guess.

Excellent repair! You are correct that it never ends. Seems like buying car parts is hit or miss-you get a good part or not. I sure hope you can take the old water pump back for an exchange. That's the least the parts store could do for you.
